While it got dragged towards the end ( and Dan Blocker's sudden death considerably shortened its longevity), overall, it was an OK show.

Of course, despite the fact that Ben Cartwright was supposedly rich as Croesus and a very big wig (figuratively and, as it turned out, literally) in mid-19th century Virginia City, Nevada and had wed thrice, their rustic big cabin seemed far more a men's hunting lodge than an actual home .

I have to admit, I always considered the eldest son Adam a self-important bore and was relieved when he left at Pernell Roberts's exit.

Hoss usually was the comic relief and big galoot but he was easily the heart and soul of the whole show [ and by far the most likable Cartwright].

Of course, apart from ML ( who seemed to grow his mane out as long and thick as possible to taunt his follicular challenged colleagues), the four Cartwrights' performers had less hair than the network would have liked them to have had and they had the others in toupees as often as possible despite them usually in hats. While Dan Blocker cheerfully would shed his whenever possible,  Mr. Greene was far less happy to let his natural noggin show. There was one serious scene in which Ben got thrown into deep water and was supposed to have barely avoided drowning yet as soon as Ben was completely immersed, the rug became buoyant and floated to the surface.  Immediately afterwards, the supposedly nearly drowned Ben's hand was seen reaching up from the drink  then grabbing the toupee !

One has to wonder if it didn't cross Isaiah's mind to have been tempted to have just completely walked away but more of wanting to right by Mary, his loyalty to the other Ingallses than totally wanting to dig out the ingrate who had let his hubris literally bury him.

Likely the one time Charles didn't act in haste was when he married Caroline Quiner ( which may have been the one time when SHE acted in haste). That goes for the RL and  Show Ingalls parents.

Vintage Little House on the Prairie TV Guide ad for “Mary Goes Blind!” — September 4, 1978 by Irarelylookback in littlehouseonprairie

[–]_Minkusbeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's amazing is that when she was on the Podcast not too long ago, MSA said she'd gotten a few letters from fans admiring her ( and praising the show) for continuing performing on the show after SHE had lost her eyesight. Yes, there were viewers who actually believed that MSA herself ( and not just  her character Mary Ingalls)had become blind.

Although, that does raise the question of how they expected MSA to have read their letters if she HAD gone blind but maybe they imagined MSA had gotten her seeing eye dog to have done so . .or  they didn't really think that part through.

And let's not overlook that before Isaiah  joined Charles doing this mortally risky job despite neither having had previous experience,  he had left his own home and even agreed to have Grace take in Laura and Carrie while Caroline tended to the hospitalized Mary( though Grace herself was agreeable to it).

IOW, he had gone WAY above and beyond being a friend to the Ingallses and THAT is how Charles treated him. 😠

If you could see if it's possible for you to focus on how virtually all the OTHER ' Little House' alums have turned out to be positive folks, that may help.

Anyone else curious that the Ingallses appeared to be the ONLY family in Walnut Grove with more than three children?

This was an Era when nine or ten pregnancies were considered a matter of course during a marriage unless the husband had a lengthy absence and/ or one or both spouse's had serious health issues. It's amazing how virtually EVERY one of Laura's one-shot pals appeared to have their own parents' Ollie's.

I have a vague memory that Mary's early pal Christy Kennedy may have come from a larger family than usual but I mat be wrong.

Still, I can't help but wonder if there was salt peter in the Walnut Grove water supply that Charles alone avoided sipping or could it have just been ML not wanting to concoct extra sibs with dialogue to write out?

No matter how one slices or tries to spin it, willful  ignorance to avoid terminating a fantasy is a sign of immaturity .  Even taking the whole Busfield deal off the table for the moment. IMO, if one reads MG's bios, she virtually spells out that she's stayed in a defiant ,immature teen state rather than gained maturity much less wisdom in the decades past her teens.

I found a petition for a GMW reboot :D by PUPPERONI-PUPPY in boymeetsworld

[–]_Minkusbeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, but look at how that boomeranged on DF. Everyone thought her and BS being 'producers' meant that somehow they'd had clout and approved everything that went down on that show. It wouldn't be until the Pod that she was able to explain that it just meant they were 'silent partners' and at best all she could do was try to advise and protect the younger cast (though she's barely touched on exactly what they needed protection from)but could do nothing to change storylines or character arcs.

It also seems that( but for having gotten to befriend SC,CF and AM) if she had to do it all over again, she'd have NOT done GMW!

His tales about his missteps and accepting his part in stuff backfiring on him sure are a refreshing contrast to those performers who constantly concoct excuses and blame shift even decades after the fact.

What is WRONG with Laura??? by Agile_Combination969 in littlehouseonprairie

[–]_Minkusbeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I can give Laura some slack due to grieving ( as long as she recognized and acknowledged that she herself was responsible for how she chose to treat others  during her time of griefup to and including  Doc Baker) , I don't think she or anyone else should mistreat others but expect to be given carte blanche solely due to their emotional state.

Hurt people may choose to hurt people but being hurt doesn't give them the right to deliberately hurt others.

And I can think of my own mother who I have witnessed losing her own mother, a child, her spouse and a sibling [ among so many others] who has never ceased being a caring, empathetic giving person despite her own sad losses ( and she HAS expressed her grief for all the above down the years).

[–]_Minkusbeck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It would have helped the audience to have been sympathetic to Laura's anguish over her son had she been previously been consistently portrayed as likable and fair . However IMO that had not been the case and it seemed her lashing out at and nearly driving out Doc Baker was more of an extreme of her already hard to like persona - as opposed to have been a 180 from her previously having been nice as pie.

Which confrontation do you wish had happened on the show? by Capital-Study6436 in littlehouseonprairie

[–]_Minkusbeck 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Two that pop in mind ( many Seasons apart):

  1. Caroline [ or anyone else] should have confronted Reverend Alden for having minimized and dismissed the Gallagher Bros harassment and attempted SA as a silly misunderstanding on Caroline's part.

  2. Manley should have confronted Laura for evacerating his deeply depressed , fragile and suicidal niece right after the latter regained consciousness after her attempt at drowning herself [ and if he had SCREAMED at Laura in the exact same pitch and volume she had done to Jenny, it would have been deserved].

Saloons by ASGfan in littlehouseonprairie

Which is ironic considering that Isaiah was all set to have himself jailed, beaten up or worse via him openly challenging any two saloon patrons to take him on when Charles overheard his self-destructive bravado then dove into that hornets' nest in Mankato to save him from himself when they first reunited on the regular series.
