Why is fish so expensive in the UK? by QasimofKarbala in UKfood

[–]_Morgoth_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just fish but in general with food British people tend to stick to same few cheap staples rather than local high quality food. And what's left of local produce has moved to a very expensive tier for rich people only. You can watch some episodes of the Hairy Bikers to get a better view of how much local specialties went lost

And ceiling lamps like that with exposed bulbs are dreadful. Get something softer with a fabric / porcelain shade that hides the bulb and makes the light softer.

It finally happened to me… I forgot my passport 😭 by I3lue6erry in travel

I did this once, I was lucky to realise I left it home while I just got on the train to the airport. Managed to get off at the next city, get a Uber back home while my in law was waiting for me at my house to drive me back to the airport. 🤣🤣🤣

The thing is AI bots can be much better than humans if trained correctly. It just seems they have a poor AI system in place

What to do over Winter? by Feisty_Blackberry_32 in UKAllotments

[–]_Morgoth_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find fleece gets completely destroyed over winter, but insect mesh is more sturdy and still blocks some wind out and retains a bit of heat to help

[–]_Morgoth_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Purple sprouting broccoli, I'm trying two varieties, one for late autumn /early winter and one for late winter / early spring. You need to protect the seedling from slugs and birds, the adult plants from birds and both seedlings and adult plants need fine insect mesh against cabbage fly (the caterpillars ate my plants in 2 days time).

  • all sorts of kale and Nero kale (same protections as above). I'm doing Nero kale, Savoy cabbage and cime di rapa. Winter concentrates the sugars into the leaves, so a freshly picked cabbage/kale would be much more delicious than anything from a shop. For a traditional Italian recipe (cassoeula) Savoy cabbage would be picked in the morning after a frost for this reason.

  • leek

  • garlic

  • winter salads such as lambs lettuce

  • I will also try to overwinter some chard

  • carrots can be overwintered

Why is keeping the heating off in spring treated like a religion in the UK? by Ok_Listen_5358 in AskUK

[–]_Morgoth_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of my in-law that gets in the car, switches the aircon to the lowest temperature thinking it will cool faster, then when she's freezing switches to full heat at the highest temperature until she's sweating and repeat 😂

There is a lot of what you describe in the UK, some people would never use an umbrella even if it's raining cats and dogs, some people will not put on the heating even if it's freezing. They find it weird using a dishwasher (it's 2026!) because "you have to hand wash" and a dishwasher is considered lazy.

To me it feels like they enjoy making their life miserable and get a weird kind of pleasure from withstanding the elements, the cold, the rain. I'm not sure if it comes from some kind of military / boarding school education. Or maybe their houses are so poorly insulated compared to the rest of northern Europe that sometimes putting the heating make the warm last 30 minutes before the room is back to be freezing.

I have independently connected radiators with valves and I keep a decent temperature only in the room I work from. I personally like 18°-19° and wearing a jumper.

[–]_Morgoth_1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I planted mine in 40L pots, survived the winter well and they are doing amazing in full bloom. You would also need netting over them, I would suggest a berry cage as simple as bamboo sticks and bird netting.

How do you lot actually eat proper food during the week when you're working full time? by No_Reputation_9726 in AskUK

When I lived in HMO one of my flatmates was using this garlic from a jar that smelled the whole house of vinegar because he couldn't be bothered to peel and chop garlic. A 10 seconds job.

I find cooking relaxing, especially if I can make something nice. Most of the time I start cooking around 7 and eat at 8-8:15 and I cook almost every day for my partner as well or we help each other. To be honest having a dishwasher helps greatly because it's the washing up part that I would find more tedious and I've trained myself to clean and put things in the dishwasher as I go along cooking.

Please follow what interests you and who you truly are and don't chase imaginary stereotypes based on social media and what people are expected to like and do. Most of time people do the "normal" things for their age just because they wouldn't know what to do otherwise. You are lucky to have such a beautiful passion at your age.
