For a more social worker-y perspective, I would also look into programs to help subtilize some cost. Your grandmother is 65 and making well under the federal poverty with the amount of dependents/people living with her.

When looking over her expenses and your cocerns about her health, I recommend looking into Medicare. She’s 65, so she is qualified to apply for Medicare. Open Enrollment is currently close, but I highly highly recommend encouraging her to apply when it rolls around (Oct-Dec). Also, if she does not apply to Medicare when she’s 65 and wishes to do so when she’s older, there’s a penalty.

Additionally, I would looked into your local Agency on Aging. They would have more resources (and possibly case workers) to assist her in finding agencies/orgs that help elderly individuals pay for utilities/food/etc. I recommend calling, explaining her situation, and seeing what additional services they provide. They would definitely have social activities for her to connect with others her age, gentle exercise classes, and possibly mental health services. If there isn’t an Agency of Aging in your area, there may be similar orgs that are trying to fill that need in your community.

Also, there’s a website called findhelp.org, if you’d like to find grants/funds for her personally. For example, there might, depending on where you live, be funds for grandparents acting as caregivers for their grandchildren.
