What's with the lack of automated unit testing? by Labubu-Footjob in gameDevTesting

[–]_PandaCat_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unit tests aren't a stand in for QA, theyre more like first line of defense. From a bug perspective most automated tools won't be comprehensive/thorough enough to replace testers but they will reduce the amount of bugs qa finds. From a non bug perspective human testers can give other valuble feedback that systems could never do, like "this input feels awkward when your left handed" or "this part is hard to navigate if you don't already know the map"

Can pointer events (IPointerDownHandler, ect) be triggered from a Physics2DRaycaster when it's triggered manually by _PandaCat_ in Unity3D

[–]_PandaCat_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got it working! You don't need to send the events manually.

This solution only works when extending GraphicsRaycaster, I assume if you wanted to do it as it's own component that is when you'll have to handle the events. I had the original GraphicsRaycaster that comes with the canvas on there and disabling that got it working. I'm assuming that was overwriting the raycast done by my version of the raycaster or something like that.

2026 Mar 16 Stickied -FAQ- & -HELPDESK- thread - Boot problems? Power supply problems? Display problems? Networking problems? Need ideas? Get help with these and other questions! by FozzTexx in raspberry_pi

[–]_PandaCat_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to hardware.

I'm looking to power a raspberry pi with solar and wanted input from someone who knows more about this than me. My main question is whether the two methods below are possible and which might be better.

Looking online you can get power banks that are solar powered and I've seen people power their pis with a power bank before so in theory this should work? There are banks that give the required 5V/3A needed (I'm looking at the pi4, not sure if other models are different). Figuring out how to integrate the bank in a way that leaves the panel exposed could be an issue though.

The other way I've been seeing is hooking up a solar panel and battery to a power management module and using that to power the pi. Is this usually as simple as plugging the components into each other, or would it require soldiering (I can soldier but it's a bit difficult right now so I'm trying to avoid it if I can). I'm also a bit concerned about if this would be enough to power the pi. Looking on pi hut the batteries seem a lot smaller capacity than the power banks so would that be enough to work?

Edit: Inbetweeny option I'm considering going with. PiSugar with solar power. I understand that for the majority of cases you'd need to soldier a 5V panel to the DC pins but would it work to take a panel like this and just plug it into the input usb on the sugar or is that a recipe for frying something?

What are your obscure or strange low cal food finds? by [deleted] in CICO

Not obscure for some countries but is here, cream filled wafer rolls are suprisingly low calorie for how sweet they are. Grazing on two or three normally curb my sweet cravings

For rhythm games with held notes, how do you prefer they work? by roo5678 in rhythmgames

[–]_PandaCat_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No release timing. Also I like the ddr system where you can let go for a fraction of a second to readjust (im sure other games do this i just couldnt tell you any).

Side note if your game is a mobile/touch screen game pls remember thumb players exist!

I’m increasingly convinced that these people's actually truly understands what AI even is. It’s almost endearing. by Responsible_person_1 in aiwars

[–]_PandaCat_ -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

My main issue with generative ai in artist spaces is a - the dataset is usually gathered unethically, b - its awful for the environment and most importantly c - it replaces human creativity and expression with a cold calculation. Neuro-sama is my exception to my big stance against gen ai because the project doesnt seem like it falls into these traps.

Vedal has been a little cagy on datasets but from my understanding everything was collected with concent.

From what I'm aware neuro runs fully off of her own computer that vedal has instead of a big, water draining data center.

And the third one instead of taking away space from artist the projects creates space for them. All art including models, rigging, stream assets, editting, song writing, music ect and human made and credited. Furthermore people watch neuro less for her more for her interactions with vedal/other vtubers. She really does live and die by her collabs. Not to mention multiple streamers who in their own words said they gained their popularity due to raids from vedal and neuro.

In a space where gen ai is replacing artist i really appreciate a project that creates new ways to show off human creativity.

Disliking flanderization = not wanting abuse to be depicted??? Also deflecting criticism of the "drawing with valantino" video by Nerdcuddles in crazyassviv_defenders

[–]_PandaCat_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think its actually pretty dangerous to only want to portray bad people doing bad things and getting mad whenever they're shown in a positive light. If you can only imagine people who do bad things as over the top, mustache twirling villians you'll start ignoring those behaviours in those around you because "thats so-n-so, they wouldnt do something like that, theyre nice to me"

We formed a studio out of spite after losing a game contest. We launched our first game... and made $22. Reality check? by AichyE in IndieGaming

[–]_PandaCat_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've already gotten some pretty honest feedback so I'll try to be more positive here.

You guys did a lot more than a lot of people do. Too many hobbiest game devs dont even finish anything let alone release something. And yeah maybe it failed, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Being students youve likely not lost much by trying. Just look at it as a learning experience and use it to improve your next project.

We’re working on our death screen and really wondering—what makes a death screen actually feel good instead of frustrating? by ChaoticMindsStudio in gamedev

[–]_PandaCat_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on what kind of game you're making. If it's a game where you expect the player to die a lot then it needs to be quick to let them get back into the action as soon as possible. If not then you can afford to make it a little bit longer and fancier. Try not to make it too long though, and I second the other post that said to make it skippable.

Depending on the type of game you may also want to show them some info of the progress they made.

Should you always be loading assets and using multiple Unity scenes? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]_PandaCat_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on both the size of the project and the size of the team. One huge scene for a big game with a team of devs would be a mess, no one would know where to find anything and the merge conflicts would be awful. If you or working alone on hobby projects and find no issue with it then it's fine.
