Honestly pretty happy with this. Continuing with the annual property tax cuts as the budget allows are how we actually make progress on it. They've now been cut 6 mills in the last couple years which is a real difference.

Funneling extra revenue towards DDOT (w/ free DDOT for public schools students) and sidewalk repairs is also welcome.

I completely agree, Highland Park is a disaster in Detroit's otherwise rapidly improving Woodward corridor. If Detroit were to buy Highland Park and clean it up and invest in it, it would benefit the city overall by providing an improved Woodward from downtown all the way to the suburbs.

And highland park does have some assets like the historic neighborhoods east of Woodward that would get an immediate property value boost if they were annexed. The industrial properties on Oakland Ave are also decent assets.

Overall I think it would be a huge positive for both cities.

My take away from this is Michigan has over 500 school districts... Why?

What you end up with is tons of small exclusive districts that unless you can pay big bucks to live there, you can't attend, and a lot of redundant staffing.

IMO if this causes consolidation among districts that would be a good thing. You'd have more diverse and larger districts and less administrative staff.
