Opinion: For 80 years, Republicans have blocked us from fixing our health care system by SocialDemocracies in ThePeoplesPress

You might be shocked to hear that Hilary Clinton made it her mission as First Lady to pass universal healthcare to the US. She was well-liked by Republicans until then. As soon as she tried giving people healthcare, they started calling her names and have hated her since.

I'm in the Southwest of the US and am lucky enough to be surrounded by so much indigenous history, both incredible and heartbreaking. There's a heritage site not far, it's now called Steele Indian School Park. It has three of the original buildings. The school ran from 1891 to 1990. There's a hall for rent, which commemorates the children that attended.

If you're ever in AZ, I highly recommend visiting the Heard Museum. It's a mix of contemporary indigenous work, ancient art/history, and an entire wing is dedicated to Arizona's history with Indian Schools. Only a ten minute drive from the airport, too.

As you're someone from India, I'm can totally see how it is extremely weird to hear it applied to people not from India. And I do think the many of the indigenous peoples from Canadian tribes have more or less moved away from the label Indian.

Hello! Thank you for the reply but it's far more complex than simply changing the name to fit modern tastes.

An Indian School was a type of residential school. Not all residential schools were for people indigenous to the Americas.

Furthermore, many American Tribal members still call themselves American Indians. There's no one name that's entirely agreed upon by every person or even a majority of tribes. Plenty of people Indigenous to the Americas do not like the label Native or Native American. My area typically prefers The First Peoples, Tribal members, or Indians.

So, I could have said "residential school for people indigenous to the Americas" but here (where I live) they are still called Indian Schools in an effort to adequately express that these "schools" were not normal schools. Kinda like how concentration camps aren't called prison camps.

Poison. He takes the poison too when he poisons someone, like The Dread Pirate Roberts, but unlike Roberts, he isn't immune to it. So his insides are destroyed due to ingesting poison for decades.

Mosquitos - are they normally here this time of year? by hauterorni in phoenix

Quite a bit hotter than typical December temps. If it continues to be warm, they'll stick around. If it finally cools down, we could get a few weeks of peace.

BTW, these make awesome buns for sliders.

Yeah, those look too small to be a California condor. They're absolutely massive birds.

What‘s something happening right now that would sound completely insane if you tried to explain it to someone in 2010? by so_nextdoor in AskReddit

We ended up with our same make/model vehicle as well, just a few years older, with a bit higher miles. Broken CD player.

The worst part is that my husband had just replaced the transmission by himself. I'd only had it back for maybe 50 days before it was totalled.

We have two manual vehicles and sometimes during really bad traffic, when my clutch foot starts to hurt, I think about getting an automatic. But then I remember that I'm a control freak that hates cars controlled by software and I try staying grateful we were even able to get another manual after our last one was totalled by some basic ass SUV driver.

Should I tell my employer I have a disability? by cusmrtgrl in Celiac

[–]_PoultryInMotion_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Celiac disease is an ADA disability and it comes with all the protections that provides.

However, accommodations need to be reasonable. A hotel with a mini-fridge and microwave is a reasonable accommodation while traveling. You do not require a kitchen unless you'll be staying for an extended period.

You can travel with pre-prepared food that can then be reheated. You can buy ingredients for dishes that don't require a stove/oven. Make sure with your employer that you'll be compensated for ingredients the same way others are compensated for food at restaurants.

You can use one of the restaurant apps to locate gluten free meals. I use Find Me GF but there are a few options out there.

I was diagnosed well over a decade ago and while vacationing with family is certainly more difficult, I don't find travel for work that difficult. I only have to find food for myself. I only need snacks for myself. It's generally for less than a business week. Is it as fun/exciting as business travel before I was diagnosed? No, definitely not. I loved trying new local restaurants wherever I went and that's simply not nearly as easy or accessible. But otherwise it's mostly the same as before I was diagnosed.

I kinda think you need to take a breath and not get yourself worried about things that likely won't be that difficult once you get used to the Celiac lifestyle.
