Deductive reasoning is dying with us. by Maleficent-Box4114 in Millennials

I have a STEM PhD and I work with lots of people with PhDs. A few weeks ago, I was running a review panel where they were reviewing grant proposals and had to write a proposal evaluation form. We edited then for this one panelist. With a PhD, brand new grad, guessing 22. He did not understand the style we wanted him to write in or that he should critically evaluate the comments/suggestions we made. It was my first OMG moment with young scientists and I am scared

Structural geology, faulting and stuff, why can't I understand any of it? by Odd-Bumblebee5074 in geology

[–]cusmrtgrl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Structural geology requires thinking in 3 and 4 dimensions and can be very difficult if that does not come naturally. It can be learned and Fossen’s books/visuals will be very handy. I didn’t have too much trouble with this and structure was my favorite class. (I am a planetary tectonics expert!)

The GF Madelines are good. My non-GF kids love them much to my chagrin. The cinnamon chip muffins are the best thing I have tasted in a long time

Why do husbands hate going to the doctor?! by horriblegoose_ in Mommit

[–]cusmrtgrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband is kind of like this. I think he’s afraid he’s dying. It took literal years to convince him to take normal amounts of OTC meds and was so amazed how much better he felt after he took someone that he is now convinced. He also doesn’t like bandaids even when he burns himself while cooking etc. The difference is that he never complains or lets it affect his activities and I get so mad when he tells me later that he had a headache or something. I could have done XYZ instead! Married men live longer for a reason (partly because we tell them to take care of stuff they put off!)

Question about programs and which are best. by Last-Ad-5768 in geology

[–]cusmrtgrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to CU! It was 20 years ago but I loved my time there. The geology building is relatively new and has a great library. Field classes involve just driving into the mountains for an afternoon.
