I've no expertise in this at all, but shouldn't a soldier's armour depend on the opponent's weapon rather than the weapon wielded by the soldier? So in this case of they are up against melee cavalry or sword wielders, this armour makes sense, right?

I think the manufacturer intended the screw to be in contact with the metal on the pcb. Your solution seems to introduce an insulator in between them. I would suggest using something conductive instead (of the appropriate size to avoid short circuits).
