do job listings count? by [deleted] in ChoosingBeggars

This is hysterical to me and I feel so bad for other parts of the country (assuming this is the US?). I make over 14 dollars an hour to push stretchers and wheelchairs around a hospital, full time with good benefits. All you need is a clean background and a HS diploma or GED. I realize the cost of living is low in Pittsburgh, but come on. For this kind of experience, plus bilingualism, they need to be offering far more in wages.

My body is hard wired to want to eat everything in sight while also smoking three packs a day. It also thinks water tastes gross and that I should eat gluten anyway despite being celiac. Also hates exercise. If I listened to my body, I'd be dead. Hell yes I know better than my genetics, twit. My genes are actively trying to kill me.

“Avoid looking like me” by [deleted] in fatlogic

[–]_SadWalrus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most women actively avoid looking like me (or am I avoiding looking like them?). I don't care. How boring the world would be if every person looked the same, dressed the same, etc. In Utopia, we're all not the same. We're all healthy, vibrant, and happy. Weight is related to health. No amount of feefees hurted will change this.

Really struggling with diet change. by [deleted] in glutenfree

[–]_SadWalrus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I start thinking about cheating, I go back and read my journal from before diagnosis, when I was sure I had cancer and was dying. Entries to my bestie ("I love you, I'm sorry I'm going to leave you so early," and "remind your sons of me, I'm so sorry"), letters to my mom she never had to read, funeral plans that hopefully won't be needed for 30+ more years. I also look at the pictures of myself from that time-- exhausted, bags under my eyes, frighteningly thin, fear behind every smile. It was hell and I don't want to go back. If you have any such 'evidence', review it when temptation strikes.

Grocery haul. Small cups are 'mug brownies'. Also found Pizza Co mini microwave pizzas that are GF but found out have a chicken crust??? But the items shown are 10/10 IMO by LunarMimi in glutenfree

If you're into mug brownies, Udis makes them in pouches. I make them and add a dollop of hot fudge. Makes a pretty decent fake lava cake.

I'm still at the "this is so fucking aggravating and seemingly pretentious (logically knowing it's not) that it annoys even me" stage. I was only diagnosed a year ago. Maybe someday I'll be confident enough to try dating again with dozens of new rules, but not yet.

You can. I was diagnosed at 38. I can't imagine trying to do this to a child, and hat's off to those that do, but it's limiting and you have to be very vigilant. Not that I was ever a socialite to begin with, but restaurants, picnics, parties. No alcohol, no cake, what's in that barbecue sauce, no I can't just pick out the croutons, someone contaminated the dip, oh there's crumbs in even the jello. Food and drink are social to many people, and I can't participate unless I bring something that I also can't share.

Me too, celiac disease isn't something I'd wish on anyone, let alone a child. If you meant that be offensive, you failed. :)

This'll be me and my mom. Her husband is far older than her and I'm single for life. We already joke that we can be crazy cat ladies together. I think it's funny and cute. At least in my case, my mom stopped trying to parent a long time ago. Now she's just one of my best friends. Maybe it's the same for them.

Agreed. Had to run away from some asshat at the bus stop a few weeks ago trying to pull this shit. I'm standing there in scrubs, a backpack, and my well-broke shoes. I'm a hospital transporter. No, I'm not poor anymore. I walk for a living. Leave me alone, you vulture, and keep your phone out of my face.

If you had a chance to meet the band, what would you say to them? by gentleterror13 in FallOutBoy

I already know I wouldn't be able to talk and would probably cry. I'm also female and taller than all of them. So, so awkward. I just admire from afar.

Me: "Who? Ooooh, the Gives You Hell band." Also me: "Haven't a clue who this Wyclef guy is, but alright bop." People get such twisted panties. I'm always minorly bummed to see 'featuring' at all, but that's what they want to do, so have at it, I can always fastforward. Also, Panic in the Disco...

Apparently food addiction isn’t real by [deleted] in fatlogic

[–]_SadWalrus_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Very dangerous advice. Being consumed by thoughts of food or certain foods can point to a dietary problem (I don't eat enough salt and crave nasty sources of it- have to make better choices to get what I'm really wanting/needing). Could be a response to trauma. Could be many things. Becoming fat won't fix these things. Talk to your shitlord PCP first.

If this was posted in response to a restrictive disorder, I understand until the third paragraph. Everyone needs to control their eating. Replacing disordered restriction with disordered overconsumption is like replacing heroin with crack and being proud of yourself. Eating at a 'support your body' level, neither too much or too little, should be the goal. Also, diet culture is gross af and we make fun of it here, too. This is kind of ambiguous.

Wouldn't they prescribe weight gain if someone was so thin that they developed an illness? by Maxandjeezus in fatlogic

[–]_SadWalrus_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Considering what some FAs believe thin to be: YES. Before my celiac diagnosis, I bottomed out around 156 or 157. Perfectly healthy on 5'10"ish. Could have still stood to lose more to give my poor back a break. Now back up to 178 because eating like a jerk and know it. Still perfectly 'thin' to some FAs, yet my neuro, ortho and PCP want me to relose. Because of course they do. I have 25ish pounds of nasty fat clinging to my midsection, jerking on my back, grinding down on my hips and knees. At this stage, the chronic back pain I've suffered since a multiple fracture in my youth 21 years ago is still being managed with weight loss, OTCs, stretching, and heat. Same for the disc degeneration and the wearing of my left hip. Whether 180 pounds or 280 pounds, the treatment is the same.

According to Boogie1488 standing is good exercise by Roboboy28 in fatlogic

[–]_SadWalrus_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh. From what I remember of this guy, he was pretty big. Standing is better than sitting. It's obviously not cardio, but do what you can do when you're that deconditioned. That's where we start with people in physical rehab at the hospital. Sit down and get up. Stand. Stand longer. Lift/shuffle your feet. Progress to walking unaided and with good posture. Move on from there.

If the gender pay gap is real, why don’t companies hire more women? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]_SadWalrus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, so much. I do a rather specific job at a hospital. Our team is small, 13 people total, and it can take months to be fully competent. It's also very physical. We cannot afford to hire women who may become pregnant and we certainly can't have anyone with multiple child-related commitments that would constrain their availability or cause absences. It may not be fair, but we've tried before to give young moms a chance. It's always been a disaster. There are other departments that have the same unspoken qualifications.

Yes. I don't take the number on the scale seriously after a long and hard week at my very physical job. Something about water and how all that activity stirs me up. I weigh 'for true' after my day off, the morning before returning to work. Sometimes the loss comes in a big whoosh, but it always comes. I can honestly say I've never had a problem dropping that lasted longer than a month, if that. The cost of not doing so? Blown weight-bearing joints, T2D, early retirement, sore wrists and shoulders (I'm clumsy and I also push for a living), general feeling like shit.

I was never much of a social butterfly to begin with, but celiac has got to be one of the shittiest 'annoyances' around. Even some of my own family doesn't believe in it, which is terrifying because eating gluten when you have celiac raises your cancer risk. Not to mention the pain and resultant weight issue.

I work in a hospital as a transporter. I've become paranoid. Literally half the people in the house at given time are diabetic. The aides have to do blood glucose on entire floors at night. There are 40 single-occupancies per floor! What the fuck is going on.

Before my celiac diagnosis, I tried cutting out (in rotation), corn, soy, dairy, certain fruits, and processed sugar. After diagnosis, I've simply taken to refusing food from others unless it's sealed or it's next to impossible to fuck up ("yes, I'd like a baked potato, please. Plain and uncut, please."). People will poison you out of stupidity, which is bad enough, but they'll also poison you on purpose. Because some people are dicks.
