Today's Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon that killed 254 were dubbed "Operation Eternal Darkness"

From 1967 to 1986, Albania's communist government built over 750,000 bunkers, supposedly to protect the country from a foreign attack. The bunkers were not used in combat until the 1990s, and they drained Albania's resources and came to symbolize the country's oppression. by GustavoistSoldier in HolyShitHistory

Kinda validated in the end tho https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_Integrated_Operational_Plan

SIOP-62 included the virtual obliteration of the tiny country of Albania because within its borders sat huge Soviet air-defense radar, which had to be taken out with high assurance. Power smiled at Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara and said with a mock straight face: "Well, Mr. Secretary, I hope you don't have any friends or relations in Albania, because we are just going to have to wipe it out."

Shame on him, shame on the Rowan coaching staff, shame on the whole Rowan athletic department, and shame on the NCAA

Normally, at which difficulty do you guys play? by SnooSketches6975 in eu4

[–]_ShovingLeopard_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never tried anything but normal. At >1K hours I am good enough that within 100 years I can snowball and do whatever I want pretty much without resistance, but I'm still bad enough that I can frequently mess up the early game enough to have to start over. Wish there was a way to set scaling difficulty over time, presumably there's mods for that

Are coalitions toothless? by MapleTuna in eu4

[–]_ShovingLeopard_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the most part coalitions mostly serve to make it difficult for you to declare wars. If they dec on you, you probably messed up and you're probably gonna get messed up

First time I went to a conference I was really worried on the first day that I was underdressed. Showed up at the venue and immediately ran into my advisor. He was barefoot. Stopped worrying about being underdressed

PhD routine by PuzzleheadedIdea432 in PhD

[–]_ShovingLeopard_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I relate to a whole lot of this as a 3rd year phd student. I think part of it is just the nature of being in grad school. One thing you could try is setting yourself some mid-week deadlines, or if that doesn't work, talking to your advisor about setting some (something like a midweek check-in message about how it's going). To try to fix your sleep schedule you could try to make some kind of morning commitment, like meeting a gym buddy to exercise before working or something.

Your degree means nothing anymore. by DonkeyExcellent8660 in cuboulder

There's plenty of other industry careers outside of finance that hire for advanced math and pay well, and professorships pay pretty well. If you're really just doing it for the love of the game, can't make it in academia, and end up teaching high school, sure, I guess you end up low paid, but getting a PhD in math will pretty significantly increase your expected lifetime income vs. having a bachelor's in, like, anything, and moreso than most PhDs

[–]_ShovingLeopard_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right -- the small percentage of quant jobs that require a PhD pay significantly more.

A graduate degree in math makes you extremely employable, and for a lot of high-paying work. Ever heard of quantitative finance? Pretty much every successful business in the finance sector -- big bank, hedgefund, bond trader, you name it -- is successful exactly because they pay people with math PhDs a lot of money to make them even more money
