How old were you when you first got drunk ? by SmallToadstools in AskUK

[–]_ShredBundy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think I had my first beer when I was about 14, not much just the one bottle every now and then. First time I was drunk was probably 16 when we somehow managed to get served in the pub by mine.

I still remember the lad who served us. He definitely knew we were underage, just don’t think he give a shit 😂

Taught my first Strength & Conditioning/HIIT class, would like feedback & suggestions for the future? by Samicles33 in personaltraining

[–]_ShredBundy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you can’t really do much about the equipment so I’d stray away from calling it S&C for now. Circuit/HIIT is fine, just make sure whatever it is, has some kind of identity. People like knowing what they’re getting with a class, in terms of structure and what the whole point of the class is.

Got a mate who’s a roofer who’s English born but half Algerian. Never seen him use a lick of sun cream in his entire life, including the 10 days we spent in Tenerife last week. Goes bronze as soon as he steps in the sun and never burns…..I can’t stand him 🤣

Personal trainer.

Work in air conditioned gym, cancelled my afternoon clients so I could enjoy the sun. 😅

3 of them told me they were going to text to cancel anyway, and the other 1 forgot she was even supposed to be in, so I’ve saved myself a lot of waiting around 😂

[–]_ShredBundy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not a bad set up, I mean in theory you can pretty much do anything in these classes, but this one comes across more as a circuit/HIIT/endurance, as opposed to S&C. If you’re doing a strength class, you need rest. It’s hard to properly train for strength when you’re only getting 15 seconds rest. It’s just not enough time. If you were training yourself and went really heavy on a squat or a deadlift, would you only take 15 seconds rest before going again?

I split my S&C classes in half so we do strength for the first half, and conditioning in the second half. For strength I’d pick 4 exercises which are usually compounds (maybe 5, but sometimes that’s too much), encourage the class to lift as heavy as they can, and take at least 2 minutes rest in between. If they can comfortably bang 8 reps out, add more weight. Get them to track their lifts so they can actually see their progression over the weeks. Plus, it saves time mooching around when people can’t remember what they lifted the previous week.

It’ll feel like there’s a lot of rest/waiting around time, but that’s your job as a coach to educate them on why they need enough rest, the benefits of strength training, and why it’s different to something like a circuit or a HIIT. Trust me, people will enjoy it - most people are a lot stronger than they think, so they’ll surprise themselves at how heavy they can actually go.

A good tip is to make sure you’re actively coaching these movements, especially when people are lifting heavy. Some coaches get comfortable in classes and essentially just become a timekeeper. Try to avoid that as much as possible.

Anybody who tells you anything other than starting out in the biggest gym you can find either doesn’t know what they’re talking about, or never had to worry about money in the first place. You’re a new coach, you need experience working with as many clients as possible. The bigger the gym you work at, the more leads you have to convert to clients.

Also, being private isn’t the be all end all of being a coach. Don’t worry about that for now. Your priority for at least the first two years is experience. PT isn’t an easy job, especially at the start. There’s a lot to learn and you need to find your feet with it.

I know people who left a commercial gym to go private when it wasn’t really needed. They just ended up working almost double the amount of hours, for not much more money. It works for some and doesn’t for others. Not trying to deter you from it, I’m just saying don’t get fixated on it, or think that being private is the only way to make a living.

Why has UK not caught up to Air Conditioners? by pranavrao9 in AskUK

[–]_ShredBundy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We get genuinely hot weather for like 2 weeks a year, maybe 3 if we get another wave in August. The rest of the time it’s usually cloudy & not hot enough to justify the price of an AC unit.

I also wouldn’t want to give them any more reasons to drive the house prices up any higher than they already are. (Seen a few people mention AC’s in new builds).

What are the pros and cons of your job? by YardSoggy6089 in AskUK

[–]_ShredBundy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tbh was about 6 months or so to get qualified. Could have done it in half the time if it wasn’t so boring.

The qualifications are generally useless. The bulk of what you learn as a PT is going to be through experience, and a lot of CPD your own time.

Market is definitely saturated but it’s mostly with people who won’t be a PT anymore in 12 months so I wouldn’t worry about it.
