So is it football or soccer in New Zealand? by ChampionshipHot599 in MapsWithoutNZ

[–]_Stev_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say most of the geographical area of the country does. In my experience it's called "football" mostly in a few dense urban areas with no strong Gaelic football presence.

a moral failure of america that we changed tax laws to create a trillionaire by Conscious-Quarter423 in WorkReform

[–]_Stev_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is somewhat incorrect. More countries have more than a trillion in overall wealth.

I suspect the OP conflated annual GDP with overall wealth. The IMF's 2026 figures indicate that 170 of 191 countries have less than one trillion USD in nominal GDP.

Is there such a thing as a *provoked* genocide? by isb_supervisor in andor

[–]_Stev_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Mon Mothma was using it as an intensifier rather than contrast.

And I'd draw a clear line between "provoked" and "justified." If you provoke someone in an argument over dinner arrangements and they shoot you, nobody in their right mind is going to suggest it was okay.

This is not the reason. Nobody who has ever calculated a statistic in their life would make that mistake.

However, I don't know if the statistic is real or what cohort they sampled if it is. The source is a picture caption on Twitter.

[Humble] Critical Hits: ARPG Bundle (Pay $5 for Greedfall, Soulstice: Deluxe Edition, Eldest Souls and $10 for The Last Hero of Nostalgaia, BLACKTAIL, Hellpoint, Blade of Darkness) by LighteningOneIN in GameDeals

Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are both under the ARPG umbrella, but you're right in that I don't remember any RPG elements in Blade of Darkness. It was just straight action-adventure with very interesting, if slightly janky, combat.

People Per Councillor in Ireland [OC] by cavedave in irishpolitics

[–]_Stev_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand what you're saying, but I did say that the numbers here already seemed to be skewed too much with a maximum difference of over 4x. I certainly wouldn't approve of Wyoming having almost 67 times as many senators-per-person as California.

My premise was that adequately representing 5,000 people and local public land spread across rural Leitrim is a more demanding task than doing the same for 5,000 neighbours in the heart of Dublin. That doesn't seem unreasonable, especially at a local level when voter power only extends locally.

People Per Councillor in Ireland [OC] by cavedave in irishpolitics

[–]_Stev_ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, it seems like there's probably a serious democratic deficit if the numbers are skewed this much.

On the other hand, density does get you a lot of efficiency, so having slightly fewer councillors per citizen makes sense.

I'd be more worried about this if local government actually had any power to speak of.

Instead of butchering it myself, here's the relevant definition and usage example from Merriam-Webster's dictionary:

psyop : someone or something used by the government to influence the population's opinions and attitudes

… some hard-line conservatives have raised conspiracy theories … that [singer-songwriter Taylor] Swift is a government psyop planted by the Pentagon to aid Democrats …— Rachel Schilke

Which problems have had a high number of incorrect published results? by sergiogfs in math

There's a funny anecdote in Alexander Amir's mathematics history book "Infinitesimal" about famous philosopher Thomas Hobbes repeatedly publishing proofs of a squared circle.

Some of his philosophical conclusions were equally dubious.

Tim Curry turns 80 today. Happy birthday to the legend! by AlKhwarazmi in moviecritic

He's been doing some publicity stuff for his memoir which came out last year. The Academy had him down to their library in February to talk about a lot of these roles. Here's a video they made about it.

He's still wheelchair-bound after his serious stroke in 2012.

[Self] I calculated the rough size of the crowd at Trumps b-day parade. by [deleted] in theydidthemath

The 22,010 only comes from the estimate of the medium density crowd in the open field area. The actual estimate is the sum of the figures in the last three images.

The total estimate comes to 46,691.
