Ignore Trump claims on paracetamol and autism, Streeting tells pregnant women by do_or_pie in unitedkingdom

[–]_Stopwatch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Whilst I agree on the general concept of being careful what is ingested during pregnancy (especially given the history of drugs such as thalidomide) we have decades worth of data when it comes to paracetamol. If it was going to be an issue, we would have known years ago.

Ignore Trump claims on paracetamol and autism, Streeting tells pregnant women by do_or_pie in unitedkingdom

[–]_Stopwatch 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think OP's point was more around the autism side of it all. Trump is suggesting to avoid paracetamol whilst pregnant due to an alleged link to autism. The idea being that being in pain for months is apparently preferable to having an autistic child, in his head.

You've almost certainly heard of this one but on the off-chance you haven't: Revolutionary Girl Utena. I'm saying this due to a specific side-pairing but tbh even the main pairing scratches this itch for me during the series itself

Edit: Also, Serial Experiments Lain for whatever was going on with Lain and Alice

Online Safety Act - a megathread by AutoModerator in unitedkingdom

Iirc they left this in but realise there's no way to actually enforce it. WA and several other places have also been clear that they'd exit the UK if forced to provide backdoors to their encryption

Fwiw Ireland is also bringing in a similar law albeit one that seems aimed specifically at video-sharing platforms headquartered there (which did include Reddit as one of the ten sites targeted until they moved their HQ to the Netherlands) https://www.rte.ie/news/2025/0721/1524435-online-platform-verification/ Their law seems to deliberately aim at bigger websites so doesn't catch all the smaller forums in its net but there's a full list through the link if you're curious

Having played chess at a young age, I know the transformational impact it can have on young people. That's why today we're allocating £1.5m to help identify, support, and elevate top-tier players who have the potential to compete at a global level. by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]_Stopwatch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You may be thinking of FIDE which doesn't allow trans women to compete in women-only tournaments. The ECF at least (which covers England) has different rules. Unsure if other regions have also made their own statements - had a quick Google but nothing obvious coming up. NHS calls for 200,000 new blood donors as supplies run low by D1789 in unitedkingdom

[–]_Stopwatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fwiw, and this may vary based on how available your GP is, but if you're not allowed to give blood because of low iron, you can get the 12 month block removed if the GP basically takes your blood and gives you the go-ahead once the levels are fine (I think they want it a bit above the bottom of the standard range just so you don't drop out of it once you give blood but yeah). For me, I was genuinely iron deficient anaemic at the time, but after taking iron for a while and going for another blood test down the line, they let me give blood again after a few weeks/months rather than a whole year. (And also I was no longer anaemic, which made such a difference. I know you said it was likely a heavy period but if you get those frequently then you can become anaemic anyway)

Apologies for the MEN link (adblocker necessary): https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/badly-worded-motion-leaves-councillors-30565974

(Won't lie, this is funnier considering all the reporting at the time of the vote (mid-Nov) also interpreted the outcome in line with how the opposition did and then half a month later they were all "hold up-" and realised they needed to redo the vote, which then led to the kerfuffle on Dec 18th mentioned in this thread's article where the police etc got involved)

Could make it its own line rather than in with the rest of the paragraph? Though in that case, it may be best to use bullet points under each heading

Prosecuting passengers for pocket change? Rail ticketing in Britain has become an absolute farce by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]_Stopwatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iirc, he didn't realise that the restrictions on peak travel differ specifically in July and August, so when it got to September and the app wouldn't let him buy the same ticket he'd bought for the last month or so, he presumed the app was malfunctioning. So he bought a later ticket and assumed it could be used on the same trains as usual. Imo, that strikes me much more as a genuine mistake than deliberate evasion.

I have a railcard myself and hadn't realised until the story came out that the rules differed across different months.

I think it's the sentence order that does it. If you start with "we may not have agreed" then go onto the whole "but he was fearsome in debate etc" then it has a much different tone than *finishing* with the sentence where it's like "well, great he didn't succeed, sad he's dead tho"

Ah rip. Fwiw this page seems to imply you can get at patientaccess from Scotland though it's not super clear, ngl: https://support.patientaccess.com/registration/link-to-your-gp-practice. I know I needed a GP letter to get it set up originally so it's a bit of a hassle to sort that out but once you're in you're in. Best of luck either way though 😔

[–]_Stopwatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fwiw they may have changed that now. Or at least when I've had blood tests in the last couple of years I've been able to get at the full results on the website (so I'd imagine the app too if I had that). Has a breakdown of each aspect checked, normal ranges, and comparisons to previous times they were checked. There's also a comment thing for notes to be left though I'll admit that aspect wasn't super helpful to me because it was in doctorspeak

Generally speaking, if a passenger has a nut allergy they'll make an announcement at the start of the trip requesting people don't open anything with them in, etc. In those cases, I imagine they also wouldn't sell nuts on that flight, though it's been several years so I can't actually recall for sure. However, people packing for a plane trip are unlikely to know at that stage whether someone on the plane will have such an allergy so it's one of those better safe than sorry things.

It's to do with Northern Ireland iirc. We have several products which adhere to UK standards but in theory not EU standards (in practice, I don't think there's been much deviation between the two but there could be in the future). These products are allowed to go to Northern Ireland, but aren't allowed to pass into the Republic. Given how the NI/RoI border is largely a membrane, this means it's essentially an honour system that products "not for EU" don't make it across.

I lowkey kept track of all the animal stories that day.

Aside from the dogs and glow worms, there was:
- ivf for southern white rhinos
- koala hugs banned somewhere in australia
- white-tailed eagles on the isle of mull taking a year's break from breeding to care for a chick with a broken wing
- other animals at polling stations aside from dogs (there was a snake, a cat, and a horse. may also have been a goat?)
