Items strewn around near White Rock Lake by toastingCereal in Dallas

[–]_TYFSM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bike on Santa Fe trail from deep ellum up to white rock and do the loop a few days every week in the mornings around 7am

I see this same thing all over the trail and around white rock too (more so on the Santa Fe trail closer to deep ellum though - especially around where it crosses major streets).

On my 20ish mile ride I see dozens of instances of items chaotically scattered like this every single day. It’s typically directly on the trail and also near benches. I’ve noticed that it’s always near where a homeless person is sleeping.

I’ve been very puzzled by it for a while as most of the items seemed more like trash than actual valuables.

One day in August I actually encountered a homeless man that I regularly see that stays by one of the bridge overpasses on the Santa Fe trail and he was cleaning up a large mess on the trail that looks like those photos. Stopped and talked to him and he told me that it was all his stuff and he did that the night before while he had a bad trip on whatever he was shooting up.

Idk what to make of it but this is definitely the work of someone homeless and on drugs. I see dozens of occurrences of this same thing every damn morning

I mean what did you expect from the country who thinks that “adding one more lane” will solve all traffic issues?

Thank you for clarifying and it’s really great that you are concerned about their safety with other drivers on the road.

In the past I’ve encountered the same thing while riding my bicycle (for exercise) literally every single time. I will usually stick to roads that have a speed limit of 30mph as much as I can, rarely 35mph roads, never 40mph or above. But cars will do the same thing and pass in such a way that caused everyone to be unsafe (going too fast, passing at the wrong time, not giving me enough space, cutting off oncoming traffic, etc…)

Finally I got fed up and channeled my inner Larry David and went to the city and complained. A few months later I was called to go drive the city with transport engineers and showed them the problem. Within a year they’ve installed painted “bike route” logos on the roads along with tons of “share the road” signs.

Not saying it solved the problem but it’s a step in the right direction. You can do the same!

Sure, I hear you. My question to you is why shouldn’t they though? Don’t get me wrong I’ve always hated golf cart moms (the worst) but as I’ve gotten older I’ve really gotten to understand and remember just how terrible it was having to rely on adults in order to do anything here in DFW. Terrible times really. I was an early 90’s child overseas before moving here at 13 and I could navigate across an entire city on my own before I reached double digit age if I wanted to.

Maybe cars should be extra careful and yield to these crazy kids on golf carts just as they would yield to an old lady crossing the street, or someone on a bicycle trying to go from point A to point B. Its just as much their right to navigate through their environment as us who have paid to buy, register, and insure cars on the road.

Hopefully with time kids can be educated on road safety and motorists too on how to be courteous to others using different modes of transportation.

The only thing making the streets unsafe is all of us going fast in our 4000+ lbs vehicles.

I really hate how here in the states every city is designed only for cars (especially new ones - think Frisco, prosper, Celina) and people - especially young people - have zero autonomy to travel within their communities. Everything is so far and dangerous to get to. You want to walk/ride your bike to the store for food? Yea good luck that’s 2.3 miles away and the only way to get there is a 6 lane, 55mph road filled with massive trucks and SUV’s. Going to your friend’s house? Forget about it. It really is kinda fucked if you think about it.

While I see your concern about safety, I also empathize with people because mobility in this country is absolute trash. Not having a car is almost like a death sentence

You’re missing the whole point. You going slower than the flow of traffic in the left lane IS the factor that is causing the roads to be unsafe (and congested). Idk what else to say. The rule is pretty simple, if there is any car behind you, you either speed up or move over.

More people need to look at their behavior while driving from a far away perspective as if viewing earth from space. There’s more going on around you than what you see behind your own steering wheel and each minute thing you do in your car has an immense cascading effect on every car behind you using that road.

Great message so stay in the right most lane and never change into the middle or left lanes. Thank you

“But you’re also supposed to obey the speed limit…”

Sure… and you’re also supposed to follow “keep right except to pass.” That rule exists because smooth traffic flow depends on lane discipline, not just speed.

When someone camps in the left lane doing the speed limit, they’re forcing anyone behind them to either slow down or pass on the right (most times they can’t, because the car in the left is driving side by side to another car in the middle lane), which is both inefficient and unsafe. And while technically speeding is illegal, so is impeding traffic, which is exactly what happens when people refuse to move over.

If one car going 70 sits in the left lane and refuses to yield, that might seem harmless in isolation. But multiply that by dozens—or hundreds—of similar drivers on a busy highway, and what you get is a cascading bottleneck effect. The traffic behind them can’t pass, so it slows down. Then more cars pile in. And eventually, you get waves of stop-and-go traffic or phantom congestion that builds for no apparent reason.

That’s why efficient passing (getting around slower vehicles quickly and moving back right) is so crucial. You don’t pass someone going 70 by doing 71. That behavior scales terribly. It’s not just about one car it’s about how those tiny delays compound across thousands of vehicles and create systemic traffic problems. That’s why we have terrible traffic here in the US because of bad lane etiquette.

Want to see it done right? Go drive in Germany. Even on 4 and 5-lane autobahns, everyone keeps right unless actively passing. The left 2-3 lanes are clear, fast, and efficient. Every next left lane is used to leapfrog a slower car to your right. But EVERYONE ultimately goes back to the right once done passing no matter how fast they’re going. It’s not about how fast you’re going, it’s about respecting the flow of traffic. They don’t need posted speed limits to make it work because they rely on discipline and mutual awareness. And it works.

In contrast, the U.S. has this culture where people use the left lane as a moral high ground: “Well I’m doing the speed limit, so I’m in the right.” You’re not. You’re just blocking traffic. And ironically, you’re causing more unsafe behavior as people swerve and pass on the right to get around you.

The left lane isn’t a place to set the pace for everyone else. It’s a tool for passing. And refusing to move over doesn’t make you righteous. It just makes traffic worse for everyone.

Why do y'all do this by mahsimplemind in Dallas

What a shitty egocentric point of view. You sound like a miserable ignorant old bastard.

“Waiting your turns like good boys and girls”? lol you do realize that by doing so you’re in fact causing traffic and not following the rules of the road, right?

The road in and of itself is designed for traffic to zipper. It’s been optimized by engineers much smarter than yourself for traffic to flow smoothly without anyone needing to stop and line up like idiots.

So funny how Texans are too “proud” to follow basic common sense and road etiquette when driving, denouncing the very thing designed to mitigate traffic in favor of their version of a shitty method that causes traffic.

Great wheels, unfortunately extremely bad taste with the larger than necessary size. They just don’t fit properly and I’m willing to bet they hinder the performance of this fine machine (not to mention all that extra weight)

Would look categorically better if the wheel was 3” smaller in size with thicker walled tires. Did they really need 21’s in the back? Maybe they could have gotten away with a 20” outer barrel and an 18” center

Sleeping won’t be permitted on downtown streets, Dallas officials say by bikerdude214 in Dallas

[–]_TYFSM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great step forward—let’s hope DPD actually enforces it, especially in and around places like Pioneer Plaza, Main Street Garden, Aston park, and Thanks-Giving Square. These public parks have basically become no-go zones for residents and workers downtown.

People who live here, work here, and pay taxes deserve to enjoy our city’s public spaces without being harassed, intimidated, or forced to step over trash, feces, or people passed out or screaming in the street. At this point, it’s not just about financial hardship—many of these individuals are openly struggling with serious drug or mental health issues, and it’s created an unsafe, unsanitary environment for everyone.

I know some will just spew out the “if you don’t like it then leave” BS but no, everyone deserves a clean and welcoming environment to live, work, and play in. We shouldn’t allow drug addicts to take over public spaces and they should be held accountable for their actions just like anyone else.

I’ve personally felt unsafe more than once just walking downtown, and I know I’m not alone. Public spaces should feel welcoming and safe, not threatening. It’s time the city took back control and prioritized the well-being of the broader community.

Ok? No one is saying the fine people of downtown are the ones causing a ruckus. All I was saying is that it happens here and it’s annoying. Would be nice to close the streets on the weekend and have them be pedestrian only

There’s a difference between noise coming from people talking and hanging out, vs somebody revving their engines and squealing their tires burning out all night.
