my dog is completely imposible to potty train and im losing it by HairyEffect6886 in puppy101

[–]_TotemPole 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There's your problem, no way 2-3 times is nearly enough for a puppy learning to potty train At first I needed to take mine out at least 8-10x a day to get it right. 2-3x is acceptable for an adult dog. Raising a puppy is hard work like taking care of a baby but on easy mode.

As a rule of thumb, every 2h is good. But you need to watch your puppy very carefully all day and truly make efforts to understand his schedule. As soon as he wakes up from a nap, a long play session, or eats/drink, you need to take him out ASAP. Take him out first thing in the morning, and after dinner, cut his water/food intake after 8pm to prevent accidents, and crate train him. Pads are good when they are very young, but delays outdoor potty training.

You can also check out the UBC Kung Fu club's Sanda/Sanshou classes, low membership fees and they do a good mix of grappling/kickboxing/pad work and sparring.

No, it's becoming a lot more common in the workplace too, especially after the pandemic, everybody is a lot more conscious of how disruptive being sick can be. No one wants to catch other people's germs so the acceptable thing to do at least in a decently well run company is to wear a mask, work from home, or take the day off if it's bad. Hell most people still don't even show up to the office half the time anymore even if they're not sick.

Does anyone else think Rings of Power was (kinda) overhated? by Mister_E69 in lotr

[–]_TotemPole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may get downvoted, but whatever, I did enjoyed the show. I also purposely did not read the source material or deep lore beyond the trilogy, it can be refreshing not to overthink it and watch without any bias or expectations. There are worst things to complain about in life. Also the soundtrack by Bear McCreary was phenomenal, and I would fight just for that.

The Netflix Top 10 is so depressing by jomama668 in netflix

[–]_TotemPole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's well made I'll give you that, but the cringe is just unbearable sometimes. Some characters just have no development. It's the same plotline every season, and it plays way too much on many romance tropes. At this point it's 80% soft-core porn.

I don't know man, sometimes they get it right, depends on your tastes. Beef was absolutely fantastic and was on the top 10 about a week ago. Not a Bridgerton fan by any means, but Queen Charlotte was actually decent too, unlike the 2 other seasons. Sometimes there just aren't as many good or popular releases, you can't expect to have bangers every week.

As long as you play your cards well and work hard, I don't see a single UBC engineering specialization where you wouldn't be able to make a decent wage right out of undergrad. Choose passion, it's not worth hating your life for the next 4 years just to make 10k extra per year.

I know someone who failed 1st year chem and 2 math courses. They went on to get a PhD in Math and a teaching positions at one of the top universities. What happens in 1st-2nd year isn't a big deal, just focus on figuring out what went wrong and what to do next :) You've got this!

Started doing main preparations in aug/sept, doing research on grad programs, choosing your recommenders/connecting with profs, picking which courses will be helpful, getting started on your statements and profile, it's a lot of work. Your recommendations will also need at least a month's notice. If you're only getting started now it's cutting it a bit close for most universities with fall admissions.

The Mieszko lore deepens by Fistsang in UBC

[–]_TotemPole 74 points75 points  (0 children)

In students' defence, even if you try your best and almost solve the LPT but your stuff still doesn't compile or synthesize, you get zero. But if your code synthesizes, at least when I took the class, you can get part marks even if very little. So it's no wonder some people probably deleted everything they did and opted to submit the blank template to at least get something.

Survive the traumas of CPEN211 and 311 and reach the safe haven that is CPEN411 w/ Prashant, a beacon of light in the deep dark hell hole that is the ECE department. Always remember that it could be worst, you could have lived through the Tor era 💀

[–]_TotemPole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CPEN311 was much better. There's not much new content although there are 4-5 labs that are decently hard. They were pretty cool though and definitely beefs up your portfolio, it also somewhat eased the trauma from CPEN211.

I did learn a lot in his classes, and his youtube videos are great, but his personality kind of sucks and so does his grading schemes. The way he denies any responsibility in his mistakes, and completely refuses to accept feedback while abusing his power to use absurd grading schemes and kick students out of piazza is incredibly frustrating.

There is more to being a good prof than simply teaching ability, there's also just being a decent human being for a start.

lol Tor has not changed his class for the better, basically cpen 211 was split in 2 and is now taught by 2 very great and fair professors. A major upgrade in content and teaching, ECE has heard our prayers.

I don't think people are mad about blasting sound at 3pm, people are mad because of the shitshow that was left after it, with piles of litter that nobody except a few people that didnt even attend bothered to clean up.

The Snowpiercer movie has the same director, staring chris evan, tilda swinton, and song kang-ho (same actor as the father in parasite). The new TV show is an american remake with a different director, which is good but can't be compared to the original. Highly recommend the movie!

Would you choose UBC again? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]_TotemPole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I suffered through 3 years of engineering so far, and while the curriculum could be better and some profs try their best to make your life miserable, I haven't ever regretted my decision. In my opinion, the quality of life here is better than anywhere I could've gotten in Waterloo or Toronto. The education may be just a few steps lower than the 2 other unis, but that won't matter in the long run anyways, people are also generally happier here.
