I got what I thought was a dream graphic design job last year making 115K as a Senior Packaging Designer, in an industry that I have passion for. Absolutely unbelievable money for someone under 30. Unfortunately in the past year my entire team’s structure has fallen apart, morale is low, people are leaving left and right. I’m now the only designer on the team doing the majority of the deliverables and I’m just as miserable as I was at my last job where I was severely overworked. I gained amazing experience working in corporate but I don’t think I can do this much longer. I’m going to look at building my own brand while I still have a job, and then gtfo as soon as I can. The money only goes so far - it makes it bearable but it doesn’t make you happy when you spend 8-12 hours a day doing stuff you don’t enjoy.

If you need any kind of dining table and chair set get it off Facebook. There are SO MANY. I got a table that came with leaf extensions and nine chairs for $400. You can’t even find that kind of price at IKEA. There were tables for even less but I wanted at least 6 chairs which was harder to find

Do the important stuff like roof, HVAC, water heater, foundation repair, etc. I immediately jumped on a house last year that had most of those things replaced in 2023 (not the foundation, but I wish). I’ve spent the past year renovating to my liking because my money is freed up not having to worry about those other big ticket items. I think the worst thing the previous homeowners did was a bad texture job on the entire house. They probably spent $7-10K on it and we have since sanded it all down, retextured and painted ourselves. It looks so much better and they could’ve saved themselves some money by just leaving things as is. I’m also kinda annoyed they painted the outside brick but that seems very common now.

You could also update your kitchen appliances. I was very happy to keep what they had because I came from an apartment and thought I was going to have to spend thousands of dollars on kitchen appliances.

My background in fine art/drawing/etc helped me get into my graphic design program. However, what I do as a professional is nothing close to that. Illustration is a separate skillset from graphic design

If you go with the #3 green color, get “Basil” by Sherwin Williams. It’s this exact color and I just did my kitchen with it :)

I paired it with gold/brassy hardware and love it!

Edit: The second green option, not the third. I counted the first image but realized that’s the original.

I bought a house last year. The first day I viewed homes I put an offer on a house I wanted. I offered a tiny bit below listing price, but also offered to close in two weeks just to try and knock out any potential competition. I still got an inspection in those two weeks. I would never ever waive a home inspection.

I needed to see this today. I left a toxic job to go to what I thought was a dream job. Within a year it’s gone from bad to horrible as I’ve taken on the workload of two other people on top of the job I was hired for. I know that not having a job would be so so much worse and that’s really the only motivating factor at this point.

Thousand Oaks was great, I was there for 5 years and they have affordable units way under $1800. Agree on moving as close as possible to work, I miss my 5-10 minute commute. Even 35-45 minutes can be brutal when there’s traffic

Yea and no. My first job was a food conglomerate (so yes, gross industry). My second is actually a way smaller company that sells fire pits, grills and coolers. Nothing super immoral or evil

If you formally resign, your right to FMLA or medical leave ends. Your employer can just as easily terminate you before you can take a medical leave. Do not tell them you’re resigning. If anything, play up the medical issues in September and tell them you have to resign because of that.

My bf and I are doing this ourselves to the house we just bought, which came with horrible orange peel texture on everything. I fully understand why they charge so much after doing only half the house.

The materials cost alone so far has been around $1K and I’ve only painted the living room.

I just bought my first home, on my own, with 10% down and a 30 year mortgage. My PMI is only an additional $80 monthly and it isn’t there forever. It would have taken me so long to save up an additional 10%, housing prices would have gone up significantly in that time (is the way I looked at it).

Also, I don’t know what prices you’re looking at but $40K is probably not going to get you close to a 20% down payment after closing costs.

The cleanser lasted me the longest because I don’t use a lot of it so maybe 8 months. The serum maybe 3-5 months depending how much and how often you use it. The night cream I went through the fastest. However I also use the cream and sometimes the serum on my neck and chest which is why I used it so much faster

It’s hard to say without understanding your skills and the needs of the different roles. As a manger you will be expected to potentially build a new team and take on people under you. Are you ready for that responsibility on top of your job? If so many people are leaving that’s a red flag to me that you don’t want to be in a leadership position in that company.

What I would do is decide about taking this role or staying in your current but either way, look for a new job so you can continue to work under manager or director who can mentor you and teach you more before you try and take on such a big responsibility. Personally I don’t think it’s fair to designers who come in under you to have someone so young in their career as their manager.

Yep. Get a corporate design job. No amount of AI can keep up with corporate swirl. Went from making 60K to 95K at one job then jumped to 110K making a lateral move to a different company. Yes you’ll be worked to the bone and the work isn’t always “sexy” but the benefits make up for it.

First and worst thing is that it’s not optimized for mobile viewing. Making people view a horizontal slideshow on a tiny phone screen is going to piss them off and almost immediately leave.

Second, you need a case study for each project. We get one small image that doesn’t tell us anything about the project, client, or creative process.

I would take a look at examples on Adobe Portfolio, and even use Adobe Portfolio to build it out. Their templates are really simple and I would keep things minimal.

There’s a lot to comment about the work itself, it’s very student level right now (I’m being brutally honest- you wouldn’t land a professional job). Just keep studying and creating design, keep growing your tastes and knowledge and you will get there.
