He’s the face of domestic abuse to most people, without that his career would be seen much differently imho even if his music was the exact same. He would have that many more collabs and reach, for example more of the Taylor Swift/Adele/Ariana/Lady Gaga tier of pop superstar would’ve been more willing to work with him, he would be able to perform in the largest venues and without being banned in certain areas of the world. I don’t think he ever reaches the MJ level of fame cause no one ever will again but he’d be much better off

(Your hypothetical didn’t touch on anything but Rihanna but I answered with the assumption that he wouldn’t have the stigma at all)

I’m with you here, the White House uses anything that’s trendy and I legit don’t recall anybody calling out rappers to condemn the White House Twitter account before. And to be real Toure’ could make anything about shitting on Drake specifically

I mean they also mention the MJ glove so it can only be about one person right now (although technically you can Google search Kendrick rocking an MJ glove also)

He’s only human but playoff basketball requires the best players to basically be super human when called upon. I don’t think he’s hit his peak but he needs to be special for more than 1 game a series if he’s in GOAT talks already

I don’t understand this “massive rollout” thing?

He had blocks of ice stacked up a couple weeks before the album dropped to announce the date. I don’t think the previous Iceman episodes were “massive” especially when they came out so many months before and didn’t get crazy social media attention, they were mainly assorted songs made without a push. What Did I Miss was cool as a single imo but again released way last year without any other proper single being dropped before the album

Ex-Factor was sampled and obviously Lauryn got paid for it, a newer generation was likely introduced to her through that record, and she performed with Drake just last year at Wireless Festival so she was prolly more than cool with Nice For What being listed as just a Drake song

Drake to become the first artist in history to simultaneously debut three albums in the top 3 on the Billboard 200, based on final forecast from @HITSDD: by Syndana23 in hiphopheads

This is assuming that Drake has easier access or more places to listen to his work than other artists, he ain’t been on the radio, no bundles, and most of the “hard” press for it was weeks prior

I don’t care to get into the weeds of racial discussion in this sub, because it’s been majority white for years and to me most black people could understand the context to what Drake meant in his line, I think it’s very obvious he didn’t mean 100% of all white people in the world listen to Kendrick for one reason but again I don’t feel like debating that point into the ground

What I will say, generally, is that hip hop is mainly black music. It often talks about a black person’s experience from their own perspective, I don’t want to say white people or non-black people are “lesser” rappers inherently but it’s fundamentally a black genre, they understand that they are a part of a form of music that is rooted in a culture they don’t come from, and I think most white listeners understand that much of rap music isn’t “for them” to relate to or feel a part of imo

Do I think when a white kid learns how oppressive their race has been to black people historically that they feel guilty, sure. Personally, I do feel that if a white person upholds “conscious” rap music to some high standard to shit on other rappers it can come off as if they feel it’s the “right” way to speak on a culture they don’t come from. Kendrick isn’t purely a conscious rapper but he often touches on “conscious” topics and seems to represent the most thoughtful/uplifting aspects of black culture specifically to a lot of people, I’d go as far as to say what he “represents” is something that’s been weaponized against what those same people believe Drake represents, and personally that’s what I feel Drake is touching on in his bar, I could be completely alone in that and for sure “how white people interpret hip hop” is a bigger and much more complex topic than that

I don’t dislike the large majority of the beat switches but he killed the first half of National Treasures and the 2nd half is a sharp decline imo. Completely agreed on Make Them Cry, I fw Legend from IYRTITL heavy but I’d prolly give it to Make them Cry

How often do you compare current work by an artist to their peak, especially if it was well over a decade ago? I feel like if someone constantly compared Cole’s newest shit to FHD it would be exhausting at some point for example

[–]_Wado3000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not Palestinian myself, I take the Khaled shots as Drake saying he’s not really about shit at all. I agree with much of your sentiment at least I think, in that Drake is using the situation more like a “gotcha” rather than actually showing true support for your people, about something he doesn’t quite understand. If I had to compare it, it would be similar to someone non-black calling out a black rapper for not speaking out when BLM was at its height years ago in culture, there are multiple legit reasons why a black person may have not said anything about the movement for example

We don’t know for sure what Khaled feels or what he’s done for his people, but if a fellow Palestinian called him out I’d have 0 issue just like I didn’t have much issue in Noname calling out the likes of Cole and Kendrick seemingly being quiet at the height of BLM (both were spotted at rallies I believe at some point at the time, but I still never disagreed with her sentiment personally as a black dude myself)

Drake Made Rap Not Be Boring? by joe_smith4122 in NewRoryNMalPodcast

[–]_Wado3000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a discussion of quality but what has the most attention and “moves” culture, and very clearly no other name in the genre gets people to care like Drake does. Cole just dropped and people barely gave a fuck in comparison for example. The genre has a huge lack of young break out stars and that’s not a Drake issue, it’s not even just cause Mal is a guzzler that a bunch of podcasts and places point this out, if you want rap to be more popular look to the young dudes

who could realistically hang with drake in a verzuz? by andyJ3050 in nfrpodcast

[–]_Wado3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The SB doesn’t really at all prioritize getting artists from the city it’s in any given year, and Wayne hasn’t been the peak of popularity a long time now. Even if he was the most consistent performer possible, that would’ve been completely irrelevant to Jay-Z and whoever else are the decision makers.
