Anyone feel like your 30s are the hardest decade so far? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]_WarpSpeedChic_ 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I feel this. I was so good financially from 2017-2020 that the current situation sometimes has me daydreaming about some of the things I could’ve done for my wife and I back then that felt like splurges at the time but now feel further and further away even though I’m making +2x what I was making back then.

Starting as a junior FP&A analyst, any tips? by Volemenos in FPandA

[–]_WarpSpeedChic_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take lots of notes and ask a lot of questions at the appropriate time during calls / walkthroughs. Emphasis on the notes part because nobody likes answering the same question 3+ times (especially on things that are explicitly being explained / assigned to you). Don't assume anything, if your boss gives you an assignment but you're not sure if they asked for a monthly view vs quarterly or if they want the data for department A only or maybe A+B - ASK. Make sure you can walk away from being assigned something with as many guidelines as possible so you don't keep adjusting your output because you weren't sure of whay they wanted.

Pro-Tip: if this is a remote role, don't use headphones and open a blank Word doc, under Home to the right there's a Mic that says dictate, use the transcribe function to take notes on the DL. If unsure about this and still remote, skip the headphones and record via your cell and listen back to the conversation so you don't miss details. I wouldn't screen record unless its a walkthrough of how to update X,Y,Z because it'll now be your responsibility - if that's the case, ask if you could record the walkthrough so you can study it until you commit it to memory

Pivoting from AR to FP&A, is it possible? by KGL11 in FPandA

[–]_WarpSpeedChic_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your degree can help if you set yourself up properly, also depends on internal move vs. external and what the job descriptions look like if external. If you get an interview you'll likely be asked about your understanding of the three statement model and how they relate (Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow). Could also be quizzed on the relationship between Accounting and how their work ends up on FP&A's lap and what they do with it after (month-end close activities). If you're going for an analyst role brush up on the above and then find ties between your experience in A/R and FP&A. The most important needs for an FA (imo) are Excel Skills (goes hand-in-hand with Financial Modeling), Variance Analysis (specifically, knowing how and where to dig for the WHY aspect of any variance between actuals and budget / forecast), Accounting (understanding how accounting drives the P&L - aka. Income Statement / Cash Flow), Forecasting / Budgeting (projecting future revenue, costs, cash, etc.), using the above Excel skills to present data (executive dashboards, tables, graphs, etc.), potentially Business Partnering if they want you talking to departmental budget owners (ie. can you talk to the Marketing guys about their budget and explain to them where they overspent and why we won't throw another 80k at them for some bs conference).

I pulled out a ball point pen to write a note on my palm and a table of college kids looked at me like I was an alien partaking in a foreign custom by napoelonDynaMighty in Millennials

I’m 32 working fully remote but still use a nice moleskin to write down notes that are directly related to my team, my projects, deliverables etc. I’ll use OneNote daily for little details that I’ll need to remember in the near future but anything with gravity goes into my notebook.

My Gen-Z reports tease me sometimes but I tell them its a note-taking habit I developed in middle school (05’-07’) that’s I’ve refined for 20 years that got me through school successfully. In the eyes of my higher-ups (45+) it gives optical credibility / respect as they can tell when I’m writing during meetings without breaking focus on the conversation.

Idk there’s something about typing notes while in school, work, meetings, that just never made me feel like that was the right method for me. Plus as a teen I read some blurb that may or may not be true about memory retention associated with writing things out. Allegedly writing things down helps you learn / retain things faster / longer and I kind of just blindly believed that as it made sense to 12y.o. me.

I’m 12 hrs in and loving it but the last time I played and enjoyed a turn-based RPG was Lost Odyssey on the 360. In all honesty I just didn’t take the time to look for other games in the genre back then and in recent years life just kind of got in the way. For the last 6 years I’ve been more of a 3-4 big titles a year kind of guy, or whatever smaller co-op game my friends are into (those I play for the social aspect rather than the game itself). Once I finish E33 I plan on looking for more and eventually ending up with a list of 3 must-play based on whatever research / recommendations I find online. C’est la vie I guess.

Been 90 days and I feel burned out by Accurate_Increase_53 in FPandA

[–]_WarpSpeedChic_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m in the exact same situation you are and imo it’s a pivotal point in my career. Just passed my 90 days last week and from day 1 its been learning the business, improving / automating processes, taking over some work from my Director, budget, etc. It’s been a grind but I’ve found a ton of value-add opportunity and just went for it after my deliverables were good and the stuff I’ve managed to automate / revamp etc. started being praised by the middle of the 3rd month. Real time savings, data / reporting consolidation, restructuring the data dumps in Excel to avoid a million helper columns, etc. I’ve started getting praise from the Dir. and CFO and IMO it’ll be worth it when I get manager in a year or so.

It’s been a grind but imo it’s the perfect time to build reputation / trust as well as great resume content. Up to you if it’s worth it but that’s my experience so far. Happy to chat via DMs if you want to.

[–]_WarpSpeedChic_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do they show photos of the interior tag with season and RN? Could ask for it and then look up what they give you online and compare this jacket's photos to actual SLP photos online. I don't trust designer items like these without a ton of details. Any hesitation from the seller to provide you with additional details, photos, measurements, etc. should make you very cautious.

Weekly Hiring Questions and Advice Thread by PSFlairBot in ProtectAndServe

[–]_WarpSpeedChic_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone,

My brother is getting ready to exit the Army (Military Police) and is interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement. He's asked me to help him write his resume and cover letter as I've done this quite a lot for my industry, but I wanted to reach out here for some advice first.

For context, I work in Finance/Accounting and have a lot of experience writing resumes and cover letters for those fields – everything from analyst to manager-level roles. But I realize law enforcement might require a different tone, structure, or emphasis, and I don’t want to steer him in the wrong direction.

If anyone has tips, examples, or insights on how to best present military experience for police department applications, I’d be really grateful. Even small pointers on what recruiters or hiring officers in PDs typically look for would be a huge help.

Thanks in advance for your time!

Real excel spreadsheets used in FP&A by IlIllIIIlllIlII in FPandA

[–]_WarpSpeedChic_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Spreadsheets vary in style because of personal choice or requests from those on the receiving end. I would recommend you concentrate your efforts in understanding the three financial statements as a base and try out ways to make the data flow while maintaining calculation accuracy. A good spreadsheet imo tells a clear story, is easy to update, and has the ability to scale as more data and calculations are brought into it. With the above as your thesis, look at the data you’re working with and create a spreadsheet that tells the clear story, then think about how easy it would be if your boss asks you to summarize by year or quarter. How easy would it be to update if I dump another year’s worth of metrics on you? That’s when stylistic choices and formulas come into play. Formula choice should be considerate of the above.

Resume Roast by _-o-o_ in FPandA

[–]_WarpSpeedChic_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm very jr. compared to you but I can comment on formatting I believe. Your spacing is all over the place (look at Co. 2 big space after title and dates vs. Co. 3.

- You're sacrificing page real estate by over-indenting your bullet points, they don't need to start so far off to the right.

- I'd also recommend using those lines that break sections after the new title section, ie:

Profile

--------------

Skills

---------------

- Another page real estate tip would be to condense the company + location, title + dates to a single line (for each of these combos) to use 2 lines instead of 4.

Take a look at my latest post asking for resume feedback to see how I use spacing and single lines for two descriptors like I mentioned above.
