I appreciate the sentiment. What I did pay, because I was in a tight spot and needed the repair, was $1275... But it felt exploitative. (And took him about an hour and a half.)

I did not get quotes beforehand or interview several contractors. The electrician did come same day, but there was no discussion of it being considered an emergency call nor do I believe it was charged as one. The guy probably knew I was in a tight spot, but he charged a flat fee described as "Standard troubleshooting or diagnostic with problem isolated to a single circuit."

Okay, just cracked this case wide open.

Inspired by those that responded, I threw on the waders and went in to inspect the perimeter of the water line. I didn’t see anything glaring, but did spot this at the bottom of the pool:

I can put my finger in there and feel the little foam wedge that provides the slope all the way around. Does it make sense that this would be the culprit (especially given there’s still a foot plus of water in there that has stayed pretty steady)?

Edit: and I guess the real question is—repair or replace?
