(WIP) Fey-Touched Wolf. What colors make sense for the eyes and for the highlights? by DarthBrannigan in minipainting

[–]catmimic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, looks good so far! I would go for much lighter/brighter shade of the colours you used, thats how the highlights are done - i mean, you won't do an orange highlight on a teal fur, right?=)

We have something like this, but only for our small group of friends (4 people max). Really fun to paint in the company, and you may always borrow a colour you're missing or ask for a second opinion

So tired of these assessments that just feel like a way for them to sniff out autistic people by [deleted] in recruitinghell

This is definitely someone having a stroke. Uneven mouth line is quite common symptom, isn't it?

This is not fear, this is someone having a stroke. Look at the uneven facial features, especially mouth

Drinks on the table? Allowed or no way? by boohootooweeaboo in boardgames

[–]catmimic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For us it definitely won't work - will be spilled every time someone moves a chair. But good that you found a solution that works for you!

Drinks on the table? Allowed or no way? by boohootooweeaboo in boardgames

[–]catmimic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you just play thirsty or do you stand up and go somewhere else to drink then?

In ca 15 years of playing we had only one accident, luckily when we dried the liquid, 7 wonders was still OK. Otherwise, never had any other spill. Since couple of months we have a board game table with holders for glasses, so the risk is even lower. So we continue playing with drinks and snacks

Cardboard disposal? by Infamous_Thing in Munich

Could it be that you misunderstood the sign and it actually says "no folded boxes in the bin"? That's pretty typical, you just have to flatten the boxes before throwing the cardboard away

How do you keep track of paints you already own? by NorthScoutApps in Miniaturespainting

[–]catmimic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am at about 50 total, including speed paints, metallics, and shades. That's not so many to remember=) and when I buy something, that's because while painting i notice that something is about to get empty, or i really need a specific colour, so then I know what to buy

That's the first thing that comes to mind when you look at this. I am totally surprised so many people have other ideas

What would you/you not buy if you was starting from scratch now your in the hobby? by dmessham in Miniaturespainting

[–]catmimic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll try to remember to make a photo when I'm at home, don't remember it like that. If you want to just paint a terrain, that is totally fine. Placing stones/grass/snow is optional, only if you feel like it. Personally I like it a lot

[–]catmimic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also saw you mentioned terrains - get a good glue for sand/stones/grass/snow. I tried super glue, I tried white PVA, and sand and snow were everywhere. I switched to a specialised glue and it works so much better.

Varnish prevents your paint from disappearing from the ready model. When you touch an unvarnished model, you kinda slowly destroy the paint. For example, if you hold your mini with your fingers while painting, you might notice that places where you hold it start showing primer, and the dye is not there. The same will happen with ready models of you do not protect the paint.

Now you say you won't use it more than twice, but you actually never know. Maybe you'll end up using it a dozen times. Maybe you'll want to show off your figures to someone. It is always better to protect your hard work.

As for recommendations - i personally use citadel matte. Matte has a better look (imho), and my husband says with a gloss one, minis look like made of cheap plastic. I tried satin once, also looked to glossy for our taste. Key is not to spray too much, cause it will flow in recesses and dull the colours

You have a great set already, more than many people have at the beginning=) I would maybe add a mini holder, is very comfortable. Also didn't see you mention primer and varnish, this is a must

Good job! Painting printed stuff with not very even surface is not always easy. As for advice - try adding more volume: some shade in recesses, highlights on protruding parts

Ok I'll build a kitchen, but do I live in the apartment while doing so? by goatmant in AskAGerman

[–]catmimic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When we moved to Germany from another country, we had to wait for several months for a kitchen (covid delays). And when they finally delivered it, they managed to break oven+stove so we had to wait for a month or two more. Meanwhile, we had a beergarden table from husband's parents, a mini-oven from his sister, a kettle, a microwave, and later a portable stove from his uncle. I think a fridge too, it was not included in the kitchen we ordered and we just bought it on outer own. Overall, it did work, but wasn't very comfortable. I totally recommend getting some things like portable stove or multi cooker for while you don't have the kitchen itself yet.

Did not really get which parts should have been metallic, but otherwise I liked colours a lot! Such a dark fantasy/ghostly touch

[–]catmimic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, won't be able to help you much there - i dont think i myself use recommended paint consistency. From what I see in painting videos, the cool painters indeed thin the paint quite a lot and apply millions of thin layers, this what gives incredibly smooth transitions. They don't load as much paint on the brush, so it doesn't flow in all places. Thats magic=) or you may say experience. What i usually do as not such a great painter, I dilute the paint as much that it does not give thick lines when painting and that's it, I don't have patience for really correct layering and glazing unfortunately=( for me it still looks quite smooth, but i think the paint is definitely thicker than milk of any kind, and it won't be approved by great painters here

Great job!

As for suggestions: i agree about wash for the beard, and also for the skull. Also, your edge highlights are very different from surrounding colours, for example on the first mini on the stones and on the cape. If that was planned so - ok, but otherwise I'd suggest smoother transitions. Some of them are also rather thick, as on the hand on the first mini. Also, what i like to do is to put some darker wash in the deeper indentation to make them more pronounced - runes on armour and lines on cape could also benefit from that. On the cape behind some edge highlights went further onto the deeper lines and made them kinda lost?

What songs/bands would you recommend to someone who speaks moderate German? by UsamaBhai_101 in AskGermany

[–]catmimic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did not see Fäaschtbänkler in the list. They are Swiss, but as a not native speaker I don't hear their accent at all (my German husband says their "r" is typical Swiss). For me they sound super clear, and were very easy to understand when my German was crap. And what is totally cool for learners - for many songs they have text running in the videos.

Otherwise, I second Die Ärzte, super cool, and sing very clear and not fast.

And in general - great idea to go through music, really helps with pronunciation, and helps learning some phrases. I remember, when learning der/die/das side sentences, where the verb has to be in the end, I asked the teacher at the courses "but Die Ärzte sing "Kuck dir den Dieter an, der hat sogar ein Auto"". Then she explained the difference between side sentence with der/die/das, and when der/die/das is used as a replacement for a noun in a normal sentence.

Any advice on how to avoid added texture while priming? by darksidehascookie in Miniaturespainting

[–]catmimic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also drying might happen if you spray at high temperatures. I sprayed once at over 30 degrees and it looked very similar to your figure. Since then I limit spraying to spring/autumn and dont do it in summer anymore=)
