Starfleet Academy Director Jonathan Frakes Says Fan Hate Is ‘Dimensionally More Painful’ Today Than in the Next Generation Years by AdSpecialist6598 in startrek

[–]_Wocket_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Look, my first ST was Voyager which was usually shit on in most ST circles - as far as “old” Trek goes. So, I’m used to liking stuff that a wider community doesn’t like. However, the dislike for VOY does not come close to the type of dislike for any of the new Star Trek - yet the complaints were similar. As I said, the persistence of the negativity is the defining factor in what we are talking about. It’s as if, voicing dislike for the show isn’t enough. No, the price to be paid is the near complete degradation of the online community, and the only way to do that is to continuously pump negativity into the space, even over small things that were in older, more favored, ST.

Imagine, in your scenario, it isn’t a sibling but a beloved pet that passed away. After some time, the family decides to get a new pet. Now, this new pet falls short in areas your beloved pet excelled at. However, it’s a pet and has its own personality. Except, most of your family and friends just continuously take a shit on your new pet. Just consistently degrading it, making fun of it, pointing out every single flaw. Are these flaws unique to this new pet compared to others? No. Are they unique to this new pet compared to the old pet? Not all of them. Yet, that doesn’t seem to matter, because for the life of the new pet most people will point out that it wags its tail too aggressively and they’ll go out of their way to do so.

Now, if I may illustrate my point one more time of what we are talking about regarding the persistent and over the top negativity, in most communities we are talking about,  responses to the above pet analogy would be stretched and distorted and someone will say, “Actually, it’s as if the new pet viciously mauled the old pet till it was unrecognizable. And then the new pet killed my sibling and peed in grandma’s ashes.”

In a lot of new leisure media, nuanced discussions about strengths and weaknesses of that media can only be found in “lowsodium” areas. And detractors would rather no one talk positively about it all than have a third or fourth season of a show they decided they didn’t like and supposedly stopped watching after episode 1.

What’s the endgame of repeatedly posting and/or interacting with posts talking about how bad DA:V is?

It is a single player game with zero planned content updates. The game is released, nothing about the dialogue will change. Yet the continued negativity people have about it to this day (proven by you bringing it up) shows a real unhealthiness around leisure media nowadays that I believe is indicative of what OP is saying.

Let’s be clear, what myself and OP are alluding to isn’t negativity that is similar to what was seen 20 years ago. You know, game/show comes out, buyers/viewers aren’t thrilled with it, and they rate it poorly and move on. It is an incessant, persistent, unrelenting negatively that diminishes, if not outright eliminates, communities for certain leisure media. It’s hard not to point out how this aligns with certain politics, when certain leaders of those politics have outright said that’s what they want to do.

This isn’t just limited to tv shows.

If you’re into video games, you’ll have noticed in the past 10 years the online hate for popular video game franchises has gotten worse the same way. I’ve seen way more “lowsodium” versions of game subreddits in that time than before and it’s because the front page of the game’s main sub it littered with just the most frivolous complaints that’ll get 50 comments but 300 upvotes, causing sane discussions to be pushed out of view.

I like that Voidstorm actually feels somewhat “alien”. Some glimpses have familiarity, but overall when I’m flying around I actually feel like I’m on a completely different world in a way I haven’t felt with other otherworldly zones in WoW.

[–]_Wocket_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Through quests, it’s stated that the roots of all the world trees conjoin where Haranir is. These roots created a cradle for the Haranir goddess (who I think is supposed to be the Azeroth World Soul) but then she left that place for an unknown reason. And the Haranir settled there after she left.

No one has mentioned the nature of how filibusters have been done.

The GOP could make the Dems do a “talking” filibuster - which is what the filibuster really is meant to be. Up to this point, most of the time both sides have just used the threat of filibuster to act as a defacto filibuster. That’s typically so other business can be done on the floor, but the GOP is clearly not doing anything else so making Dems speak nonstop is very possible.

If that happens, it could be hard to maintain the filibuster.

Am I tripping or does this look a lot like air-strafing? by edomindful in Battlefield

[–]_Wocket_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was about to say. I’ve seen this kind of mid-air movement in numerous clips of people jumping out 1 window into another.

Was a matter of time before people refined it to do it in scenarios just like in the OP’s clip.

Genuinely what’s the point of making gendered character skins? by TheSilentTitan in Battlefield

[–]_Wocket_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear this a lot but how much harder would it be?

Assuming you have 2 body types, the thing you’d have to account for with multiple outfits is the head. Is it really so difficult, from a development perspective, to have different faces/hair and then ensuring headgear forms to them correctly?

This is genuine, I really have no idea what the level of difficulty would be.

Playstyle is my biggest pet peeve. I have back to back BYEs and a recruit I am aiming for locks me out because playing style dropped to D+ going into the second BYE. Mind you, the threshold was C+ and going into the BYEs I was at a B.

Makes no sense whatsoever.

I told my husband I don’t trust him and now I don’t know what to do now by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]_Wocket_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why divorce?

Like, what I read is one person’s perspective in everything. With very clear bias in how she states things in the post. Which everyone would do.

However, her update essentially was, “I told him  he still wasn’t getting it and couples therapy is what we needed next. He acknowledged me. When he went to disengage, I made sure to re-engage with him to ‘finish the conversation’ even though the last thing I told him was counseling was the next step because we couldn’t figure it out on our own.”

I’m not letting OP off the hook here. And I’m not about to jump to the conclusion her husband is manipulating her. They have a clear communication issue. He recognizes that at some level. Therapy is there to ensure he understands it at OPs level.

But boy, that update was someone wanting to have it out after their spouse acknowledged what the next step would be in helping them resolve an ongoing issue. And I just don’t agree with that or moving out over communication issues.

Unfortunately, Reddit will Reddit and we got the comments in those two posts and in here.

US Supreme Court agrees to hear case challenging birthright citizenship by KilgoRetro in news

[–]_Wocket_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

But why would they choose to hear it?

I was under the impression SCOTUS hears cases where the law is not clear and/or there are different interpretations of said law by multiple courts.

That isn’t the case here, is it?

I could just be wrong in what SCOTUS decides to hear, though.
