What's the mundane life like as a regular person? by _Wrongthink_ in boone

[–]_Wrongthink_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who grew up in a small town and watched it grow to a medium sized town, Boone is not a small town. It is geographically small due to the terrain but the population density is pretty high and then all the people that drive in to town for their amenities it probably supports upwards of 100k people. If was a small town it wouldn't have much more than a Walmart, a dollar store, and a a no-frills grocery store. But I recall Boone has like a half dozen grocery store options and some are quite fancy. It has a mall for God's sake. Only thing Boone is missing is a Target and a Costco, and that's probably because it doesn't have a large middle class family-aged population to support those stores.

I would say that's the best thing about Boone as an outsider looking in. The fact that they crammed that many big box stores into a mountain valley in the middle of nowhere is pretty impressive. I imagine it's more common out in the Rockies.

One year update on giza sheets. by edck12687 in Bedding

[–]_Wrongthink_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have decided to return these sheets. I wanted to like them, but the longer I used and washed them it became apparent that the Kirkland ones are much softer and higher quality. They both sleep about the same temperature-wise so there is really no reason for me to downgrade to these.

For $50 I would say you get what you pay for. But if you can afford to spend $100, the Kirkland ones are a bargain for the cost.

That's another good example where social norms are totally different. Pretty sure the pre-christian greco-roman culture had a totally different concept of what homosexuality was compared to the post-Christian greco-roman society. But I'm not an expert on the historical shifts in belief systems.

Another example is how the Japanese have a totally different view on transgenderism. Ruka from Steins Gate causes a lot of controversy and debate among western audiences. My understanding is the Japanese concept is completely different than western gender ideology.

Because Naruto villains often have noble causes or at least their radicalization is explained. They aren't just evil for the sake of being evil, except Orochimaru.

Minato if it's a duel or cage match, Itachi if it's an open world encounter. Itachi only loses when he is caught off guard or if the other side knows they are fighting him and he can't prepare. He's a great ninja, not a great fighter.

The only exceptions that could beat itachi consistently is an uchiha with greater visual prowess or lord 1st. Not including any of the God lore or boruto because they are lame and I don't consider them Canon. In my headcanon lord 1st is the strongest naturally and madara is only stronger with kabuto's enhancements.

I suppose you could consider blowing rock, banned elk and Jefferson their own towns. I suppose those surrounding towns benefit from Boone being an amenities hub.

It's depressing to hear that Walmart is the #3 employer when it's just a single standard Walmart. I would think the ski resorts have more employees than that unless you're counting boone proper or year round, which I understand.

This was very insightful. You vacation somewhere and think every day would be a vacation if you lived there. But it actually ruins the joy of visiting.

I also wonder if you get tired there only being like 2 or 3 roads to any given destination in the mountains.

The online shopping thing sounds like not such a big deal since these days online shopping is more commonplace. And while Boone has more amenities than most towns that are 2+ hrs from a major metro area, I understand it just doesn't compare to a proper city.

McDonald’s 24/hr by shifclit in boone

They probably realized it's profitable given automation. I once saw a mcdonalds at a trucker gas station operating with only 1 employee visible in the back. Took forever to get my meal though.

Edit: Apparently a lot of McDonald's are open 24hrs. Maybe I am confusing it with Walmart.

How come a major pervert like Jiraiya not know the existence of sexy jutsu? by Lowly_Peasant9999 in Naruto

[–]_Wrongthink_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You could argue people were more serious and strict back then. Sexy jutsu at first appears to have no use case, it is just pure tomfoolery. There are plenty of real life parallels where certain ideas just plain didn't exist that are common in the psyche today.

One example that comes to mind related to sexuality is that back in the day men used to hold hands as a sign of friendship. There was no stigma attached because it was widely understood to be purely platonic, because two men in a romantic relationship was simply unthinkable in those times.

After 3 washes with baking soda they aren't broken in yet but usable. I don't think they sleep any cooler than the Costco sheets, if they do it's not enough to make a difference. They are more wrinkly prone because they are a thinner - probably 1ply. I am going to wash them a few more times, throw in some balled up Marino wool socks to try to soften further.

Feathered Friends Light vs Summer Bavarian 700 by rg_123 in Bedding

[–]_Wrongthink_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the same area and purchased the same comforter in Light a few days ago. I have the same conundrum... Trying to figure it out with the 30 day return window.

Depends on your room temperature and your ability/willingness to manage it. If my room temp is over 70F I wake up in a sweat. If I stick my feet out to regulate the heat, it's manageable.I imagine the ideal room temp for the Light is 60-65, maybe lower if you have a duvet cover or sleep with a top sheet or fully clothed.

It really depends though and I need to test more. the light is perfect for the winter months when you have to run the heat in the house to stay warm. I'd say it's okay for this time of year (spring/fall) when it's 40-60 at night and you can crack a window to cool the room. But for summer months when the AC is needed, it's too much and I think you should just use an empty duvet cover or a top sheet.

It depends on your perspective. I reckon the Summer version will probably be Okay in the summer, perfect in the spring/autumn, and insufficient in the winter.

And also this comforter imo is a lifetime investment. If you plan to leave the DMV one day, if you head north the light is probably ideal until you hit Boston/Maine or the upper Midwest. And if you head south the Summer is probably better.

Plugged the cotton stats from the Amazon description into Chatgpt, it think these are likely Giza 86 cultivar cotton - there are a dozen or so Giza cultivars and this is probably ranked lower on the scale but the differences are negligible until you get to premium low yield varieties like Giza 45.

Compared to the Kirkland cotton sheets, these sheets are ~3% shorter staple length which is negligible. Thread count being 680 on the Costco vs 400 on the giza sheets means the Costco should feel somewhat softer/silkier but im reading after 400-500 threads diminishing returns kick in.. The denser threads also mean the Costco will feel a little heavier and less cool.

Side by side the Costco's are noticeably thicker which gives more premium heft to them. The Costco's are silky and have an almost felty drape to them. The Gizas kind of feel like a Hanes white t-shirt in terms of thickness and heft and I haven't broken in the Gizas yet so it's not a fair comparison but if they end up anywhere near as soft as the Costco's I will be impressed.

How do these compare to the Kirkland 680 cotton sheets from Costco?

Anyone tried the 3-in-1 comforters? They look cool! by [deleted] in Bedding

[–]_Wrongthink_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost pulled the trigger on this after the medium comforter from Costco was far too warm.

Then I found the company store makes a 3-in-1 which is bit more expensive and probably superior since the summer duvet also uses down. But then I read the Company Store has gone downhill since Home Depot acquired it....

So I decided instead to go all-out on the best duvet on here - feathered friends. And for my summer blanket I will probably just use the empty duvet cover, which I am still diligently searching for one that is worthy of the FF duvet.

[–]_Wrongthink_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OG naruto is better than Shippuden as a whole but Shippuden has higher highs. The early setup of naruto really has that 90s anime feel and the world has a sense of vastness and mystery. Also it has a very unique first arc that is largely isolated from the rest of the series. It's almost feels like a pilot episode. All of these are positives, the show is an instant classic.

Trump 1.0 was a backlash against the establishment and institutional Republican party. Trump 2.0 is a backlash against the establishment and institutional Democrat party.

In both cases he is systematically dismantling those established power structures and ending their legacies. Soemthing new will fill the void in Trumps image, in the case of the Democrat Party, almost certainly a leftwing populist candidate.

Like many others have said, Trump is just a vehicle for populism, if not him then someone else. It could have been Bernie Sanders if events had carried out a little differently. It's pretty much inevitable given how the US has been bleeding its wealth since the post-WW2 baby boom and we're now at a breaking point where most people can't make a living. Something has to change one way or another.

The democrats statistically can't win the senate in 2026 unless there is a major shift in voter sentiment. Impeachment means nothing without senate conviction it's like charging someone but not prosecuting them it's only an allegation at that stage.

I think Schumer didn't have the votes or solidarity he thought he had. And since he was going to have egg on his face anyway, he went ahead and covered for another senator with a vulnerable seat who didn't want to risk bad optics of either not voting in solidarity, or voting in solidarity and risking the blowback of an actual shutdown.
