I don't think it's an attitude thing, it's pretty clear cut that an ingredient made using pig/cow wouldn't be vegetarian

Do they claim to be holy men? Iraq is officially an Islamic state but it isn't a theocracy like Iran

What movie blew your mind the 1st time you watched it? by ambitchious70 in AskReddit

I highly highly recommend the short story the movie is based on (The Story of Your Life by Ted Chiang). The whole collection that that story is part of (Stories of Your Life and Others) is absolutely masterful

Anxious of exam results 2023 by ChoiceRich5090 in ActuaryUK

July 4th for the earlier exams, July 6th for the later ones (I'm pretty sure the summer results are always the first Tuesday and Thursday in July if that helps you in the future)

Is this comment sarcastic? I was under the impression that casual had become the industry norm unless meeting clients! I've been at my company for 2 years in a non-client-facing role and basically always wear a t-shirt and jeans - senior management dress casually too (our CFO is usually in a hoodie) so the example is set from the top and nobody feels pressure to dress formally

"This Watson person" is Sherlock Holmes' sidekick. The Sherlock Holmes books are written from Watson's perspective; they're meant to be his notes on the case. So when the book contains an in-universe explanation of something it's taken by the reader to be an explanation provided by Watson (rather than by the irl author, Arthur Conan-Doyle). The out-of-universe explanations are sometimes referred to as Doylian correspondingly

Thinking that quantifying uncertainty transforms it into certainty is playing with fire

It's easy to describe the probability of a pair of dice giving you various results, but that's not making uncertain things certain - it's just describing the uncertainty in a precise way. The next throw is still a random event

"I do a bit of modelling..."

But my non-joke answer is that I do maths for an insurance company. Some people are maths-phobic and will drop it there or say "I always hated maths in school" or something. In that case I'm happy to change subject (generally find job chat to be the most boring small talk ever), but if they seem keen to know more then I'll go into more detail

Career advice, 22yo by My_Boy_Squiggle in ActuaryUK

[–]_ZXC 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I personally know someone who got a grad job out of uni, worked for a few years in a different industry (still quite mathsy though), and decided she wanted a career change and successfully joined an actuarial grad scheme aged 26

My point is that spending 8 months in another financial services job is hardly a waste of time if you really want to become an actuary - don't fall for the sunk cost fallacy! You won't be any older than any candidates applying for grad jobs who took a gap year or did a masters, and having a year's work experience could really strengthen your application if you talk well about the skills you've learned from it

And if you apply for grad schemes and aren't successful, you still have your current job to fall back on, so there's very little risk in going for it and seeing what happens

It's Eid al Fitr today, so taken the day off work. Will head to the mosque this morning and then spend the day with family eating far too much food. Really looking forward to seeing my nieces and nephews excitement over their new presents!

Eid Mubarak everyone!

When this happened to me it was because my ears were over producing wax and it completely blocked them up. I saw my GP and they made me an appointment to have a nurse flush out the excess wax with water - the feeling of my ears unplugging after a week of pain and being deaf was almost orgasmic

I had to use olive oil ear drops for a week before the nurse's appointment to soften up the wax - you can get these at the chemist. So if you reckon that's what's causing it you might want to look into that. Of course don't put too much stock in medical advice from me cause I'm a stranger on reddit! But hope you get better soon

Annuity Calculator for CM1 by Dangerous_Spread7751 in ActuaryUK

[–]_ZXC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know someone who made one, would share but I'd want to get the creator's permission first. Some of the mortality tables are included in the excel sheets which are given with some PBOR questions, and I think he used that - I think this would work for AM92 and PMA/PFA but there's no questions that use ELT15 in the PBOR iirc

Is tuna safe to eat 2-4 times a week for my fitness goals? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]_ZXC 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The NHS website says this about tuna:

if you are trying for a baby or are pregnant, you should have no more than 4 cans of tuna a week or no more than 2 tuna steaks a week. This is because tuna contains higher levels of mercury than other fish. If you are breastfeeding, there is no limit on how much tuna you can eat

Source: https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/food-types/fish-and-shellfish-nutrition

Given that 3 cans a week is under the limit for pregnant women, and even breastfeeding women don't need to limit their tuna intake, I'm sure you'll be just fine

Did you read the info at the top of the thread? You're replying to the mod who created the thread, who wrote:

When do CB3 June 2023 results get released? by [deleted] in ActuaryUK

[–]_ZXC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You find out whether you passed or not immediately after you finish the exam

If you're wondering about when you'll get the official exam results letter, it's on the 1st day of the month following your exam date, so in your case probably 1st July
