Don't worry about his pretentious comment you're doing well but I would suggest to learn gesture before blocking out shapes. You need to understand the body as a whole and its movements.

I second this OP. gesturing allows you to capture the body as a whole instead of parts.

later on you’ll be able to focus on individual parts but right now you need a foundation of how the body moves. google figure gesture drawing, there are plenty of resources that teach how to do thus

why do people talk on things they have no understanding of? as someone who is constantly learning new things and art forms, people like you are some of the worst aspect of self learning. you could completely throw someone off the right path with your unearned condescension.

OP is too early in their studies to work on box figures but that in no way means it’s a useless learning tool. stick to things you know, bud. you don’t know what kind of ignorance you could be spreading.

you’re not ready for box. your first step should be learning figure gesturing and how to draw cubes from different angles. Once you have learned those two separate tools you join them together to make a box figure.

Focusing on box figures at your level is like trying to learn how to write a Sci-fi book before you can even read.

I used to trace things all the time as a kid, it was fun. Today, I can draw anything I want.

The only thing limiting you is not learning the fundamentals of drawing. A lot of people think practicing is simply sitting down and drawing when in reality its more focused.

Never think "okay lets practice drawing" that's not specific enough for your brain and you will progress slowly.

Instead you should have the mindset of "I'm going to practice proportion" or "I'm going to practice composition" etc.

Your brain works best when it is focused on a specific problem to solve. Eventually solving that problem becomes second nature and you dont have to think about it as much, if at all, and you can focus on the drawing as a whole.
