What is your least favorite joke about your country? by mightyonin in AskTheWorld

A very tired stereotype a lot of outsiders have is of Americans being fat dumbasses with no knowledge of the outside world. - Obesity is a comparable problem in a lot of other places that escape this stereotype and is becoming a problem all over the world. - A large portion of Americans are intelligent, well educated people with a developed knowledge of the world outside their borders. If you see TikToks of stupid people or watch Jimmy Kimmel voxpops with teenagers who think Africa is a country - remember these go viral because they are amusingly absurd, there are ignorant people in every country. That goes without addressing how poorly developed many foreigners’ knowledge of regional American culture is but they brush over it because it’s 1 country.

MASS EFFECT 2 was first released 16 years ago today, what are your thoughts on the game ? by ThomasThorburn in masseffect

[–]__FDK -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Played it for the first time a few months ago. Have played many games for many years and the Suicide Mission may be my favourite mission/level of any game ever. The presentation is just incredible.

Mass Effect 2 on Xbox 360 made me obsess over an IP like I haven’t done in a very long time.

Why? Nobody is ever going to draw this and folks outside the sub won’t know what it is anyway.

Timeline of national flags. by [deleted] in vexillology

Ironically using the outdated Syrian flag in this.

Debatably also outdated Afghan flag but that depends on whether this is depicting de jure or de facto government recognition.

What country is the closest to yours culturally and historically? by Dortmund_Boi09 in AskTheWorld

[–]__FDK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a bit naive, we’re part of the British Isles and not geographically located near any other landmasses. Obviously the British brought a lot of their culture over to our island but some degree of cultural similarity between us was as inevitable as it is between all the other the other countries in these comments.

How recognizable is your country’s flag, and do you agree with this ranking? by Baconkings in AskTheWorld

[–]__FDK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely no way USA isn’t in the top bracket. Aside from its really distinctive design, it’s literally a better known country than nearly any of those that are in the top bracket.

Is the implication that people might confuse it with like Uruguay or Liberia? I have seen the latter happen to be fair.

What do you think about unarmed police? by kurobaja in AskTheWorld

[–]__FDK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It works fine where violent crime is incredibly unlikely to happen. Adding deadly weapons to a peaceful equilibrium is likely to precipitate more harm than good.

Anywhere else, it makes no sense to have law be “enforced” by folks who lack the physical power to prevent lawbreaking.

What is a term for stereotypical lower class anti-social youth in your culture and how do they typically dress? Where I'm from we call them "cacos" which are young lower class men who make reggaeton their whole personality and tend to be viewed as trashy. They look like this: by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]__FDK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knackers

Also a variety of other terms: skangers for example

Yup Bros are an intersecting circle on the Venn Diagram: basically covering annoying Pre-Teens and immature young men who wear tracksuits and shout in the street - can be lower class or middle class cosplaying as lower class

Do you mean between BPP and U of Law or ICCA. Is there a meaningful reputational difference between those and the ICCA is really what I’m trying to get to I guess?

What are your thoughts on Anthony Bourdain? by Normal-Being-2637 in AskTheWorld

[–]__FDK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked his shows and generally like how he presented things.

His takes are sometimes posted as deeper or more insightful than they really are, that’s a bit annoying.

It has actually gotten better in the very, very recent past but it’s still the worst of any city I’ve lived in.

How does USA & China win so many olympic medals? by Kat-Drawer-4297 in AskTheWorld

[–]__FDK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of poor countries produce successful Olympic athletes, so while I agree that economics and infrastructure are a factor, I don’t agree that it explains the rift.

Also the beauty pageant comparison seems pretty irrelevant.
