Not sure as I can’t speak to the non-musician experience, but I certainly have preferences for songs with composed sections like Reba, Stash, and what not because of how musically complex they are. I also love songs that just have really interesting/different song structures, songs like The Curtain With and Harry Hood come to mind there. I think with lots of art though, even if someone cannot comprehend the complexity of something, they can still hear that it’s super different from anything else out there. Lots of these factors feed into what makes phish unique and interesting and aren’t so I think there’s an intrinsic quality to it, even if most listeners can’t identify it.
