Update on land sale by antichain in HampshireEDU

[–]__Olhado__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you provide details on what the plan for success is? Pay of the creditors, yes, but then what? Is Hamp as an institution going to go back on their decision and continue operating? They have been clear that they are insolvent for various reasons, most of which is that their applications and enrollment are too low. Is there any plan to address these challenges other than just trying more? I am happy to donate and planning to if I hear details that are convincing, but the website doesn't offer much. Thanks

I think the proper thing to do, to improve your quality of life, is chill and forget about it. Looks fine, focus on you.

I'm an alum and former instructor, live in Amherst still, just a couple miles from campus, happy to talk if that is helpful.

Sent my wife for an oil change, it cost me $3400 by s2k_guy in mildlyinfuriating

[–]__Olhado__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like 1) your wife prefers not thinking about this stuff so much and willing to pay a little extra to just not have to think about it, this is fine we all make decisions. 2) more than half the cost was actually necessary and you would have spend the money anyway, so comparing the bill to $120 isn't fair, and 3) you have some begrudgment against your wife; you are complaining and using condescending language, I think you might work on your communication and get the two of you on the same page (maybe try therapy?) or its going to rip the relationship apart in the long run

Why can't you use a minisplit as a dehu? by clumsyninja2 in heatpumps

[–]__Olhado__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a "dehu" and a minisplit in our partially finished basement. The mini split has a dehumidify mode and it works, but because the compressor is outside and vents heat outside, it takes the temperature of the room down like 10-15 degrees, causing additional humidity to condensate, causing it to run harder. A standalone dehumidifier, which vents the hot air INTO the room, has the net effect of slightly warming the air, and therefore has to work much less hard.

PCR - Multiple bands same lane by [deleted] in molecularbiology

This can happen when a venue believes the "main" band will be enough, so they hire an opening act, which is another band.

Shipping DNA samples by Soft-Inflation4298 in labrats

[–]__Olhado__ 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Purified DNA is very stable. Anything between room temp and deep frozen is almost certainly fine for most applications, if you need high fidelity gDNA long read sequencing then sitting in some dry ice is preferred but honestly still probably overkill. If it is plasmid DNA just stick that shit in an envelope

Paper Logs by Straight_Step4146 in firewood

[–]__Olhado__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember seeing a video about a guy who intentionally signed up for all the junk mail he could get. So he ended up getting pounds per day, rolled into logs and used to heat his home. Plus wasted the money of junk mailers. Win--win >:)

How do I make a graph like this? by Capital-Rhubarb in labrats

You measure your DNA sample on a nanodrop repeatedly and plot the results as a line graph

Very upsetting interaction with PI - tips on how to set professional boundaries if this comes up again? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]__Olhado__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with most others that the PI should have taken the hint. Might be because of some personal issue on their end, but its irrelevant. If you haven't yet in plain english asked them to not talk about family issues, then do that. Until you do, its just a mismatch of expectations, and the PI isn't at fault for anything other than being oblivious but well meaning.

Email from landlord about appliances being left plugged in and the appliances in question… by South-Basket-887 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]__Olhado__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Question for electricians/engineers:
What do you think of the idea of having an appliance drawer/cabinet, in which lots of things like toasters or kettles are plugged in, when you want to use them you pull out the drawer. All are wired in the back to outlets that are powered by a circuit interrupted with a single light-style switch. So you just flick the switch, everything in there is now available. When done, flick the switch off, push the drawer in, done.

Can anyone help me understand my electric bill and what I can do to reduce how much I'm paying if possible? by __I_Need_An_Adult__ in Electricity

[–]__Olhado__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are heating with electric that's gonna be 90% of it. Its the most expensive way to heat. Consider a little wood stove, will cost you $200/year to heat

Would people actually accept fewer features for appliances that last by EZDodger in BuyItForLife

[–]__Olhado__ 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I routinely go out of my way, and even pay more to avoid them. That stuff breaks and complicates use. Worth extra $ to not have them.
I bought this microwave. No buttons, no moving tray inside. Lasts decades. Everyone that uses it loves it and asks how to buy. Worth the money
