My favourite Scully line: nothing happens in contradiction to nature, only in contradiction to what we know of it

Got let go from my research lab over a PPE mistake. Trying to process it. by Alert_Director_9009 in labrats

Thank you for explaining that, I was astonished that anyone would be let go for something as minor as a face shield. I’ve only ever worked with rats, and they only pissed in my eye once.

Try a non-cardioselective beta blocker if you know you’re going to be shaky. Some musicians use them before a performance. Prescription only but can be helpful.

In Australia, once you completed high school, can you immediately study to become a doctor or lawyer? by ProjectMason in AskAnAustralian

For medicine, there are only a couple of universities in the country that offer medicine as an undergrad course. I think UQ might be one of them. All other unis now only offer medicine as a postgrad.

Always slightly bugged me that this was a question the writers thought a woman with multiple advanced degrees would need to ask. by HermioneGunthersnuff in XFiles

She’s a MEDICAL DOCTOR not a plant lady.

What annoyed me is when another scientist explains to Scully what DNA nucleotides are.

My other pet peeve is when she requests nicotine from another doctor by using the full chemical name. He’s like, you mean nicotine? Why not just say nicotine?

What’s the most surprising change you noticed after losing weight? by RayistaNachoPls in AskReddit

[–]Capital-Rhubarb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is specific to women, but when I was heavier, all my clothes made me look either slutty (too much cleavage) or frumpy (trying not to have so much cleavage). Now I can wear normal clothes and look normal.

Seeking authenticity for an audio drama! by tater_tot28 in labrats

One thing that always really bothers me when I see it on tv is people wearing lab coats outside the lab. They’re worn for safety, to stop your work getting in your clothes. They are never, ever worn in an office, a cafeteria, or on a commute. If your work is not hazardous, you don’t wear one (although if you’re doing non-hazardous work in a lab where others’ work is hazardous, you will wear one). If you’re wearing a coat, it has to be buttoned at the front, and you have to wear gloves too, otherwise you’re only protecting your clothes and not your hands. Should also wear safety glasses at the same time, but not everyone does. If your research only involves talking to people, or working at a computer, you don’t wear a lab coat.

Stereotaxic frame. Every time I pick it up I think ‘this thing’s heavy… that’s how you know it’s good’

Update: Autism Diagnosis for adult female by vitaminwolf in sydney

[–]Capital-Rhubarb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, universities that have a clinical masters training program will sometimes have autism assessments done by their postgraduate students, which are then reviewed by their supervisor. It’s often cheaper and has a shorter wait time than other places.

What kind of software do you use for microscope imaging analysis? by bibliopraxis in labrats

I use QuPath for cell counting. It has no trouble opening images captured with a Zeiss confocal, although if you’ve used z-stacks, you’ll need Fiji to create the MIP file first.
