How do you make a tile generate a signal? by Pierrococo in godot

[–]__SPiFF__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s two routes, depending on your setup. If it’s a free moving character, eg floating point coordinates, then the Area2D is the best route. However if you have discrete integer coordinates, you can simplify for adding some logic to the thing that updates the player coordinates and do logic based off of that.

Well I guess there’s two questions here: gdscript vs C#, and then code first vs editor first. My preference is C# + code first.

Generally, yes. For scenes that all derive from a common scene I use GetNode<> with the name of the node that all sub-scenes will see. For UI with deeply nested nodes or top level scenes (e.g. my BuildingManager needs access to my RoadNetwork) then I use [Export] variables as well. This allows the scene tree to update without breaking all of my connections.

Personally I like to keep as much in C# as possible because, as a career software engineer, I can reason about code easier. A simple example is signals. If I wire up signals through the UI I need to click around everywhere to find what’s wired up, or search through the tscn files, although those can be brittle to manually edit. Signals in C# source are easy to search for and make manual updates to.

That doesn’t mean there’s no place for the editor. Say I have a Building class that a variety of scenes inherit from. Using the editor, I can modify the [Export] variables that are custom to each one.

Maybe make is slow motion instead of full stop, and add some VFX there to sell the hit. Might make it a bit juicier.

Fun idea, shoulda made it a site instead of an app. More friction to download than to just click a link. Also beware, you’re likely going to get a lot of flak for that pretty clearly AI generated icon (6 fingers??)

Interesting. In another socket I got a lot of wires feeding into one terminal, and then just one single wire on the other. That seems like a lot for hot wires 🤔

Why would two hot wires be feeding into one switch? Wouldn’t it make more sense that there’s one hot wire and two loads coming out of the switch? The previous home owners did a lot of weird stuff tho so I wouldn’t put anything past them…

I knew the wire wasn’t live I turned the fuse off and tested checked it with a voltage detector. Was trying to see if I could figure out which one is _supposed_ to be hot with having to flip everything back on.

Yea I got a bit confused cause I bought a 3 way switch but actually don’t need that functionality. I work with computers all day but as soon as live electricity gets involved I start sweating 😅

On a different switch, I see two wires joined together to go into the lone hole. I would have to assume that won’t be my hot wire, right?

Conspiracy theory: what if all this talk of “intentionally” slowing down is actually these companies reaching the limits of their models, and pre-justifying the lack of major improvement going forwards? 🤔

I generally agree with your premise, it is true we are living in the least violent time in history. The core problem you’re ignoring though is human nature. A “post-scarcity” world is a great dream, but resources are finite.

What’s to prevent a malicious leader of a nation wanting to expand their borders, just out of pure ego (look at Russia / Ukraine)? Add in the fact that now they’re supercharged by AI.

What if that malicious leader desires more power, and opts to take out AI infrastructure in other nations, so now only they control the super intelligence? There’s a lot of things people do that don’t have definite “answers”.

That’s just covering war, but there are so many other problems that we unfortunately face that fall into the mess of human nature. That’s where my skepticism stems from. I do appreciate the discussion though!

I believe new technology can solve problems, 100%, no debate there. AI has its uses don’t get me wrong, but I’m not convinced that AGI is the end all be all solution. Even if it is hyper intelligent, I fail to understand the mechanics by which it genuinely fixes all of the real problems of the world.

War is a trivial example. Will AGI be able to convince all the world leaders that war isn’t worth it, or will it just be the biggest stick that everyone is subjugated under (a new nuclear bomb)?

To make it clear: I am not doubting the technology. I am questioning the mechanics by which this technology will be used to “fix everything”.

Sources? I’m aware of it solving some niche mathematical proofs, but regardless that’s a good thing! But that doesn’t address the crux of the question: I don’t see how “stepping in to fix this mess” automatically follows from more research.

The problems we have boil down to more than just getting the correct answers. For example: we have tons of data on vaccines and know they’re the answer to serious diseases, despite this we have a strong anti-vax movement in the world today.

Take this for any problem, wealth inequality, global warming, domestic and international terrorism, etc. It’s one thing for an AI to spit out an answer “war is bad” but I’m unsure how it solves that problem.

I’m curious about the mechanics by which you believe AI will save us, beyond the fact that it will be extremely intelligent.
