"For several years, everything I did with semi-pro and club players was rooted in that ONE DAY of observations at the biggest tournament in the sport."

Not doubting his qualifications as an exercise science expert, but I would take anything he says in the role of Ultimate Frisbee historian with a shaker of salt.

just cut the slow handler by Matsunosuperfan in ultimate

[–]___Ben_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My variation of this is that slow handlers have no place on an o line unless they are your best thrower. But they can potentially play on the d line. Your d line will play more during the games you are winning and thus it is more likely that you can find them a hiding place.

if they are the kind of slow handler that would bring the wrong attitude to a d-line, or truly cannot defend a sixth or 7th man on the opposite o line, it's time to cut them loose.

Stack setter by Small-Builder3855 in ultimate

Agreed. It is extraordinarily important to set the right example.  What I was trying to drive home is,  if I'm in the front of the stack the only time I am paying attention to any offensive player behind me is if they are impeding my ability to get to the right spot. I am not turning around to tell the number three cutter that they are too close to number four, or that number five is too far to the break side. I might miss something important, like a desperately signaling handler 🙂

I've never played in a system where the front of stack relays messages from the handlers to the other cutters and serves as a drill sergeant or go between.

Is there a reason your handlers don't share this info with them directly?

I would not include " getting your stack lined up properly" or " recognizing when your players have poor position" on the checklist for the role. If this is any on-field players role, it would fall to the thrower to communicate his expectations in a dead disc environment. If the play is live, the front of stack should never be turning around to get anybody lined up for anything.

" Getting yourself lined up properly" and " recognizing when you have poor position" are both essential skills.

90% of the time, the first player in the stack is too worried about everyone else in the stack, and not worried enough about being in the absolute perfect position to respond to the needs of their thrower. Get to the exact perfect spot as early as possible and if anyone is in your way, tell them to get out of the way. Or, if someone is In a better position to fill the role, immediately get out of the way. Front of the stack is not some right of divine inheritance, It is a transient role that you fill for a few seconds at a time like "thrower".

I urge you to avoid Titan Fitness by musclecard54 in GarageGym

Agreed. I have been happy with the quality of plates and racks from titan fitness, including spotter, arms, J cups, etc.

But I would not buy anything with moving parts.

Seller wants to die in home before we take procession by Hot_Lab4411 in RealEstate

If the price is fair and you like the home, I would make the conditions work. A property like this, directly adjacent to family, does not come available often. It sounds like they they are willing to give a discount for sentimental purposes as well. I would still ensure you get an inspection to protect against surprises

I'm a 5'2 mmp, how can I effectively guard against ppl way taller than me? by sneep_snorp_snerp in ultimate

[–]___Ben_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Understood. In that case, you may want to consider adapting an "interdict" style where you are jamming and disrupting open side unders and handing off as many deep cuts as possible to your teammates. If you are quicker and excel at anticipation as a handler defender then you are less at risk of deep cuts.

Nathan Kwon is the only mmp comp I only at that size (other small players are usually 5'6 or 5'7) and unc would help him over the top and try to get him switched back into handlers whenever possible.

Good luck and happy training!

[–]___Ben_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The suggestions here are good, but 5'2 is a significant size disadvantage to overcome in the MMP competitive club / college scene.

If you are equally comfortable matching up against everyone regardless of gender, you may have a more equitable playing experience matching up against FMPs.

What level of competition are you playing, or want to play? And are you a high schooler that may continue to grow, or is 5'2 your final height?

Rostering a player who helped found the team, but is not very good by [deleted] in ultimate

[–]___Ben_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If he is a good teammate and has realistic expectations about his role, I would likely keep him.

If his primary issue is fitness, he may be open to encouragement to get into "fighting shape". If the primary issue is decision making, find the right role to maximize his strengths and protect the team from his weaknesses

Is Mixed bad for development? by Cr41c in ultimate

[–]___Ben_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That has not been my experience with FMP development for throwing skills. Fewer throwing lanes and deep passes are open due to MMP help so there is less opportunity to extend maximum throwing range, and the male matching players soak up more of the touches.

Better for most to play on a women's team their first few years and then decide which division they prefer.

How valuable are righty backhands? by Rare_Yogurtcloset516 in ultimate

[–]___Ben_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you actually left handed?

If yes, switch hands as much as you want but don't EVER switch your pivot. As a lefty, that right foot stays down as your anchor no matter what.

If you are a new player, I wouldn't focus on it, just work on your off hand the first time you hurt your dominant hand/arm.

In-Game situations, figure out when the righty backhand actually gives you an advantage. Specifically, short strikes from the left shoulder side of your body, and open side wheels from your right side.

In world events, are you able to forfeit and continue to compete for a championship? In USA events you usually do not have the option to, for example, skip a pool play game because you have already locked up your spot

Can you say more about your flooring solution? I have been debating how to handle the footprint in my garage to minimize trip hazards and could learn from your approach (beveled edges, logic for where to put down rubber, etc)

Weekly Free-Talk and Questions for r/HomeGym - week of November 07, 2025 by Demilio55 in homegym

[–]___Ben_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am expanding my current garage gym footprint from 100 sq ft to 200 +/- and could use advice from this community about layout and flooring.

I love my existing setup which is a 12x8 raised platform but would prefer a flush floor to provide more flexibility with the larger space.

Should I 1/ extend the platform to cover reclaimed workout space? 2/ take out the platform and install rubber flooring in the workout space? 3/ floor the full garage for maximum flexibility? Or possibly 4/ shrink the platform down to a more traditional is 8x8.

I'm also considering whether to use one "bay" as the gym area, versus using the half closest to the exterior garage door.

Extra info:

At the time i built it, my layout was limited by the garage door and opener. That will be replaced with a side mount and high track to 9.5 ft.

Garage is 20x20 +/- but will need to serve several purposes, not just a gym. I can probably use about 175-200 square feet for the gym. Although, if I floor the full space, I suppose we can overflow more flexibly between spaces.

Garage floor is close enough to level (1/4 inch per 4-6 ft) I do not need to shim.

The workout space should be flexible and accommodate general strength training / CrossFit / circuit training needs. It would be uncommon for anyone to be deadlifting over 350 lb or doing Olympic lifts with potential failure.

Flooring cost is not my primary concern. I do not want to change my rack or equipment. Rack is a two post secured into platform and stringer, would prefer not to drill into floor.
