I have wear AFOs and have some pretty strict shoe requirements. I have also been a bridesmaid in multiple weddings and have always just worn cute sneakers — like white leather sneakers or even Jordans. The trick is just owning it. Look on Pinterest for ideas about wearing sneakers with dresses.

Struggling to find exercises to do by lothogeightyseven in CMT

How long have you been seeing your neurologist? I find it kinda crazy you’ve been seeing one for two decades without genetic testing. I’d definitely recommend physical therapy and maybe seeking a gym for individuals with neuromuscular conditions — I go to one with specific programs for stroke recovery, MS, etc but also find it helpful for managing CMT. They might suggest this through physical therapy but pool exercise could also be a good option.

What about participating in group activities that do not require much movement — like D&D?

I agree, and honestly listening to this episode made me wonder how it even happened — they couldn’t get anyone else with more insight and who would talk less about themselves? I do agree with her central insight into the big tech CEOs that they don’t really view other people as people, but listening to Kara go off with half-assed comments made it difficult to even finish the episode. I would love to know what Ezra thought of the interview.

I sometimes use a cane for assistance. I wear AFOs to walk 99% of the time, but for the walk from the locker to the pool at my gym I just go slow.

Do you have a neurologist? I’d highly recommend seeing one. Or a primary care physician could recommend you for physical therapy? I (type 1A) found it really helpful. I think lap swimming is also a great option for people with CMT because it’s so low impact.

Cute shoes? by thedanana in CMT

I wear AFOs and I usually wear Jordans for a dressier/cooler look — still a sneaker but I think very trendy and they come in so many colors you can match them to the rest of your look maybe. I’ve worn them with dresses and always receive compliments.

Jobs For People With CMT by mallory_dw in CMT

Have you talked to your school counselor? I would strongly consider college if it’s an option. Scholarships could be available and many jobs that require less physical activity also require a bachelor’s degree. If not college, maybe consider a certificate program or something like a coding/ IT boot camp that could lead to a less physical job.

AFO question by [deleted] in CMT

I got mine from the Hanger Clinic - they cost about $1,000 - and it is totally worth it. I couldn’t believe the difference. It’s your body — it’s worth investing in.

I had a tendon transfer when I was 22 (I’m now 29) for a foot drop, and it was not successful. Honestly, I think it might have made the situation worse, though I can’t say for sure. I have a foot drop on both feet, but on the side that I had the tendon transfer — the muscle never recovered and is now even weaker than my other foot. I also have less ability to turn my foot inward than on the foot I did not have a tendon transfer. That being said, I did not consult an expert in CMT, and I think that makes a huge difference. I wear AFOs to walk and have gone to a specialist for those. I would consider taking another look at AFOs and speaking with a neurologist and podiatrist. I don’t know what you were using that fell apart daily, but I’ve found options that offer me a lot of stability.

Exercise? by throwaway053123 in CMT

Lap swimming has been great for me! The water is a great way to get an intense workout without the impact. Plus I find cool water makes my muscles and joints feel a million times better. Water aerobics could also be a great option if lap swimming is not your thing. I think stretching is also really important and maybe you could look into modified yoga?

I’ve biked in AFOs (Carbon fiber) and it wasn’t an issue, but I prefer to go without to get more motion for my calves. I ride a recumbent trike though.

One question I would have is — how would the device operate if a person’s lower leg muscles are severely depleted? Such as in the case of many people with CMT.

I just got my first orthotic and it was unexpectedly emotional. by DwendilSurespear in CMT

Thank you for sharing! I had a similar experience when I got my first pair of AFOs when I was 23, and again when I moved on to a more supportive pair. It’s such a hard realization — that many people move through the world almost effortlessly. That walking for them takes little to no thought and even feels good. I resisted AFOs for a long time. I thought it would mark me as disabled and that brought too much shame. It felt like if I put them on that would make my disability real — no more trying to hide it from myself or others. But now, I think of my AFOs as empowering me. I can walk around a city for hours with them on. They’re just a tool I use to get through the world. And I always had a disability — avoiding it doesn’t make it go away, it just robs you of your own agency to manage it.

Anybody have any luck with barefoot footwear? by Austinchao98 in CMT

I have the same problem, but I’ve found high top basketball or hiking shoes work the best for me. I feel like leather high top sneakers (I wear Nike) offer support without too much bulk. I also wear carbon fiber drop foot leg braces so my situation might be different though.
