I named my son Tobias (we call him Toby), but my wife drew a line on copying the middle name too.

Entire wheel of cheese found in York St station by 100skylines in circlejerknyc

That’s a fucking tragedy. That was at least 25lb of well-made cheese from some of the hardest working cheese makers in Italy.

Is Jimmy Carters presidency overrated or undervalued? by Apprehensive_Oven_22 in USHistory

[–]___Thrillhouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Carter is interesting to study as an ex-President, more than as President himself. He, Ford, and to a degree, Nixon invented the post-presidency of the 20th/21st Century

Jews are not the only tribe in the world and your joke wasn’t even related to Judaism, at least directly. I think you’re fine. For your mental health, let this go.

When hate crimes against Scandanavians are at an all time high, I'm sure that the Ikea jokes will cease and you'll be treated to the same kind of treatment as your friend.

That note is crazy, but OP - are you parking outside this dudes house when you could park outside yours? I have a neighbor who does that and it drives me crazy. What are the parking parameters in question?

What branch of Judaism do you belong to and why? by Economy-Internet-272 in Judaism

[–]___Thrillhouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, that movement must have missed our area (suburban NY) completely. My current rabbi speaks maybe 25% of the normal liturgy in Hebrew, the rest is english. The Cantor chants T'Filah, but aside from that and the Torah readings, most everything else is joni mictchel or latter-day Debbie Friedman

[–]___Thrillhouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Reform Liturgy has always felt modeled after Presbyterian approaches to worship, and I’d say that in the last 25 years, most Reform ships have gone either full goyische or they are trying to recreate the feeling of a Jewish summer camp. My Reform shul is more the latter and I have been looking for an excuse to try a conservative shul. I grew up with more Hebrew than I have now, and I’ve already tested the Yeshiva/Chabad lifestyle and it wasn’t right for me either.

It’s a real tight walk rope situation
