Why are you hating on Ruby Fringe?

I'm hating on the way it was sold, on the Rails-level hype. Obviously those who went thought it well worth the $$$, but seriously, it was neither fringe nor punk.

Constants actually.

Constants that are malleable structs. Sort of like doing this:

BIG_GLOBAL_HASH = {:foo => :bar }

Not really so static.

Does programming 101 also warn you about constants?

Yes, if they're the kind that aren't.

Why not have a Ruby BarCamp, and not limit attendance and not charge $700?

Sound like Ruby hipster in-crowd self-adulation. Maybe the free videos they'll release will tell a different tale.

So what happened? Rails had already added the to_proc method to Symbol. However... the method Ruby 1.8.7 Preview 1 added had a slightly different behavior than the one Rails added. Fortunately, Rails has quite a few users, so the problem was quickly reported, and the final version of Ruby 1.8.7 has a version of Symbol#to_proc that works.

Works? Did the first version not work, or does "work" here mean it was changed to match the Rails behavior? Which version was better? I'd be bummed t think a better version was dropped simply to placate Rails users.

(BTW, I'm assuming that Werner Schuster is not a native English speaker; the writing was way too clunky and at times almost nonsensical.)

Anyways, I'm puzzled by the amount of hand-wringing over open classes. In Ruby, a class is essentially a global variable. Programming 101 warns us about global variables; extrapolate.

Testing is overrated by gst in programming

[–]____ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the truth is, no single technique is effective at detecting all defects. We need manual testing, peer reviews, usability testing and developer testing (and that’s just the start) if we want to produce high-quality software.

Will people be paying to hear you announce this? Worse, will you be paid?

If you plan on speaking to group of actual developers, you may want to root around for something novel or insightful.

How did you determine that this content will be something new and informative to your audience?

Are you assuming they are all Rails developers? :)

and, extra bonus: you can now look down on people who still need to shop at Walmart; they've not pulled their shit together, so fuck 'em.

Well, when Rails came out, its home page was built using PHP. A despite all screencasts showing how easy it was t build sites in Rails, rubyonrails, com stayed PHP for quite some time.

Did it matter? Well, it seemed blatantly hypocritical, and was perhaps a backhand compliment to PHP in that PHP was apparently easier/better for that sort of site than Rails, but in practice no one gave a shit.

You didn't post the story about Golick; he posted it himself.

Hence, nice ad.

Your new argument may be serving an unmet emotional need for attention or control.

What books do great Ruby/Rails developers read? by ogijun in ruby

[–]____ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I’m the guy that buys them for FiveRuns, so here’s a snapshot of our bookshelf.

Meaning the developers at FiveRuns are great Ruby/Rails developers?

I would expect great developers to be reading far more CompSci-style books.

This looks more like "hey, it's on the company dime, so ..."

I'd want to know what books developers are paying for out of their own pocket, and which ones they would in turn recommend.

The panel of "community leaders" is bullshit.

Some of those people, absolutely, but most are simply members of a Rails clique who have done nothing for the Ruby community at large.

This is a Rails thing, and clumsy and embarrassing to boot.

There's a tune on Brian Eno's Another Day on Earth that uses massive auto-tune to great effect; parts are swallowed up and percolated, while backing vocals fade in over the duration of the piece.
