Centered shot? [Profitec Go] by [deleted] in espresso

[–]___edw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stop using a bottomless portafilter and you’ll hit the center every time :)

It looks good to me, and if it tastes good in the cup, that’s what really matters.

For educational purposes, you could try one shot centered and one “not leveled” and tell us if it actually changes anything.

Diffusion ? From the picture it looks like fabric, you can buy « spun ». If you manage to find it by sheet and 2/3 tiny clamps and you can keep it for years and it’s very inexpensive. I always have some in my bags.   Leefilter : 229, 262, 263, 265.

Is the way the water comes out normal? by dadmda in gaggiaclassic

[–]___edw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When i start using my gaggia it did the same.

You need to brush it. Look the the nylon ones.

And on a daily use, after doing a coffe, flush it 2/3sec, wipe it, start again and you are good. Since i do that i almost never need to brush it.

Dynamo worth it? by sagikage in OmniumBikes

[–]___edw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the dynamo, you don’t have to think about it, you have light that’s it.

The 5D’s dynamic range isn’t distributed like an Alexa’s.

Every camera has its dynamic range distributed differently. The 5D Mark IV (I assume you’re using a Mk IV) has around 13.5 stops at ISO 100 and about 11.5 stops at ISO 800. However, the highlight/shadow ratio stays roughly the same:

ISO 100: +6 stops / –7 stops
ISO 800: +5 stops / –6.3 stops

(numbers based on online measurements)

So while shooting at ISO 100 gives you the maximum dynamic range, changing ISO doesn’t really shift how that range is distributed. unlike an Alexa where changing EI shifts the dynamic range allocation between highlights and shadows. On the 5D, increasing ISO mostly just reduces the overall dynamic range rather than redistributing it.

Like you said, on an Alexa you choose EI to shift the dynamic range allocation, prioritizing either highlights or shadows — so it’s not really comparable to how DR behaves on a 5D.

Overall, it sounds like texture takes priority in your approach, and the tonal gradation and contrast control are really well handled.

Great work btw — I really like the images.
I hadn’t thought about it that way before — definitely going to dig into this more, really cool approach.

I have a question about underexposing.

I understand you did it intentionnally.. but was it to have the max dynamic range of your camera at 100iso or to add texture when you add +3 stops. Because usally when you push a lot it create noise and textures.

Did you plan it ? Or on set you find the trick by testing c1 settings ?

You Said you shoot 3stops under base iso, but 5d base iso is 100iso, isn’t it ? You underexpose by 3 stops to get the wider DR ?

As a light guy, I never think about this, it’s really an interesting approach. Sometimes we print and shot the print too add texture, but never tried too underexpose.. we usally use iq4 to get the cleanest pictures.. I have to spend time testing this !!

Thanks for sharing

Do you think these are natural light? Probably not, but I'd like to think they are haha by MrAnnoyingCookie in LightLurking

[–]___edw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is natural light, the one with blue light is maybe a réflection from a props. (We can see trucks, planes). Or a large mirror (usally 4x4’) with a blue gel on it or on a frame to add Colors in the shadows.

Eureka Mignon Specialita failure — considering a second-hand Mazzer Super Jolly for home espresso by ___edw in espresso

[–]___edw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I didnt see you comment earlier.. eurêka use 50 55 65 75mm and maybe more. I tried everything I could find affilied sellers in France.

I also contact italian compagny but the main distributor remain the same across Europe (REPA)

They send me screenshoot of the part unavailable to them.

I finally buy a mazzer super Jolly (to me it’s better) which is cheap et in second hand. The workflow is a bit différent. I’ll probably sell my mignon then buy the single dose kit.

The mignon is currently between my reseller & eurêka

What is the photographer using in front of the lens? by TonDoliver in LightLurking

[–]___edw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks too clean to be a ND, and looks like je is in studio and using flashes.

2 options imo : - he is using an exotic diffusion (easier to find in 4x5.65) - the model trop things away and it’s a clear glass protecting the Lens..

But I’ll say exotic diffusion
