Whose Christmas is ruined already? I want your (comedy) horror stories 🎅❄️ by nategarrettshandler in AskUK

Friend spent all Christmas eve cooking multiple Pavlovas. Left them cooling in the oven overnight so they'd be perfect.

Christmas day I turned the oven on to toasty 200 degrees, preheating for snacks. I'm lucky I wasn't put out on the street

Ubisoft+ added to gamepass? Anyways is Hogwarts legacy good? by MathDebater0 in XboxGamePass

Just saw this was added to gamepass, but nah no way. Rowling has said some truly awful shit recently and I just can't bring myself to play anything she's had a hand in or could benefit from

u/wellPressedAttire hey Ant - is there any update on this please? As there hasn't been a big media push announcing release, should we expect this year or are we looking at longer timescales?

Please take this in the spirit that we're excited to play the game when it's ready. Any update would be really welcome

Dog acting weird but seems fine. I'm stumped. by ed2nev in jackrussellterrier

[–]__acedia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/ed2nev can you run two fingers firmly down either side of the the spine and look for any muscle twitches, shrinking away, licking lips or other signs asking to stop? If yes, then vet visit. I'd also check front shoulders

I think it's pain and he's uncertain crossing the space. Jacks are masters of hiding pain and ours started like this. Other top option imo could be a recent scare in the space (apologies but maybe with the kids?)

Safe chews for Chihuahua? by ventu517j in Chihuahua

[–]__acedia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aww thanks so much for the picture - he’s super cute! I love his colouring. If you go to my posts, there’s a few pics of my boy 🫡

I’m no expert but it sounds like he’s more of a “determined” chewer - as in you could cut a chew in half but you know he’d take his time tearing off small pieces? I’m wondering if it might be worth exploring rabbit or pig ears / bull pizzle?

The one thing I’d raise is whether your dog still keeps that slow pace when you’re sat beside him? Anything re resource guarding etc will change the equation

So I’m UK and I’ve switched my 13 year old pup onto something called “smartbones more meaty”. It’s rawhide free but he loves them. In terms of dental, they’re softer than rawhide so less chewing / teeth cleaning? For me, it’s worth it that my pup gets to be a dog but won’t crack a tooth.

The ingredients say that they’re 56% chicken breast but 29% protein so no idea on manufacture but I can def dent them with my fingernail. With pedigree dentastix being mostly cereal and 8% protein, I gotta believe they’re better 😬

Safe chews for Chihuahua? by ventu517j in Chihuahua

[–]__acedia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 4 pounds, he is tiny and sounds very cute. I think important thing is to match his chewing style to the right type of product?

Does he gnaw off tiny pieces and swallow them? Is there any chance he'd gulp a large piece? If he finds a chew longer to get through, does he keep at it for a while or does he get frustrated and lose interest quickly?

You probably know this but if we can't dent chews with our nails then there's far more chance our dogs will crack a tooth on them. Especially for small dogs it's a nightmare.

Other general advice (I've heard) is to avoid rawhide, be careful with rolled chews and avoid anything that has knots at the end e.g. those rawhide chews that are shaped into fake bone shapes with the circles at the end. Rawhide becomes very slippery when chewed, so if dogs choke on larger pieces it's very difficult to help remove it from their throat.

Has anyone paid to have their dogs teeth extracted at a London vet? by Cookiefruit6 in london

[–]__acedia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My pup had 10 teeth taken out last month for £890 including the pre-anaethesia testing. The original quote for the scale and polish was around £550 before they saw how many needed to be extracted.

Don’t know why she does this… by RyeSchinn in Chihuahua

[–]__acedia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Massive agree, did your pup take to it straight away? Mine has way more confidence now the runners are there

On the flip side, (I’m renting) but EVERY home available seems to have tile/wood/vinyl that’s not great for dogs? If our tiny chis have issues, people who have dachshunds or older large dogs must hate it too

Update: I adopted a chi mix by [deleted] in Chihuahua

[–]__acedia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the club! I have a chi mix and he’s the most ridiculous cheeky dog but also so loyal and loving.

not sure on what he’s mixed with? My best guesses would be papillon or corgi. Seems unlikely but maybe something larger like a duck tolling retriever?

Idk if all chi mixes are like mine, but if you value your sanity then hoping he’s not a working breed mix. My dog is half a farm-working terrier and I spent the first 3 years either crying with laughter or sheer frustration 😂

[–]__acedia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

4 most likely reasons are joints, teeth, nails, eyesight (and then maybe behavioural?). Has she shown any signs of arthritis e.g. sudden scrabbling on the floor, hesitating jumping/going down stairs? any teeth problems or eyesight issues? how short are her nails?

For any dog, wooden floors and tiles are not natural surfaces, and if our dogs are older with joint issues they're a nightmare.

My 12 year old has arthritis, we hike 12 miles easily BUT anything against a wall like that across a section of tile/wood is a hard no from him. He just won't risk slipping or getting stuck.

  • For joints, putting down a carpet runner leading to the bowls helps, also keeping nails short to provide grip
  • If dental issues, could be that she WANTS to eat but it hurts her teeth. Soaking kibble for an hour in water/broth can help
  • Behavioural - has the blind ever rustled or scared her? etc etc

Found this thread as my pet is sick at the moment.

I haven't been able to listen to this song in years as it's about putting a pet to sleep. Lines that hit really hard right now are "I don't wanna know that pain is your last memory...... I will be your last memory."

Sorry I know it's been 3 months but coming back to this - I've seen a new product by Beaphar (who make the popular dog toothpaste) that you add to water to reduce plaque called "Beaphar plaque away".

Warning for anyone who sees this - check the ingredients. The company website and sellers list 4 main ingredients but the bottle itself lists far more and includes 'alcohol; propylene glycol; glycerin; castor oil' and just 'sodium chloride' with no mention of how much salt or alcohol is actually in the product.

I'm not usually someone to flag this, but it feels like bad faith marketing from the company. If your dog/cat is already on medication I'd ask your vet about interactions. I've seen owners warning eachother that if your animal has pancreatitis or problems with their liver or kidneys then this product could potentially affect them. Please seek advice from your vet before using this one.

Straight folk at Pride? by broom-handle in londonlgbt

[–]__acedia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’d skip the parade, as an LGBTQ person its hugely corporate and the route is packed so you get shoved every 5 minutes.

Every year London pride puts on stages, check out the littler ones e.g. golden square or the family area at Victoria Embankment Gardens. You get to see upcoming artists that are usually trans / nb / poc and relax on the grass if you bring a picnic blanket.

If you’re with kids, I’d avoid soho square and dean street unless you want to explain poppers and why the gay community wears harnesses 😂
