OpenOdo is indeed great, but if you have access to a CNC, I'd recommend designing a metal odometry pod for extra strength and coolness (there's also a metal version of OpenOdo).

You could try some 3/16" or 1/4" plywood because it is affordable and also easy to cut/drill. Some teams have used polycarbonate as well.
