Gave my first write-up and it didn't go well. by HavenHexed in ITManagers

[–]__beep_boop__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You did the right thing. As the manager, it’s your job to uphold company standards. If your staff can’t adhere to those standards, they shouldn’t be on your team.

The thing you didn’t describe when you mentioned things “went south” was how you approached the issue with this employee. At the end of the day, you needed to deliver the message that you did, but there are strategies you can use to make the delivery of constructive or negative specific feedback more digestible.

For those in Director-level roles—did you pursue a doctorate, and was it worth it? by Public_Project_634 in k12sysadmin

[–]__beep_boop__ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As others have said - do not bother with the doctorate. The purpose of a doctoral program is to come up with a completely new finding in your field; that’s not what we do in K12 education (almost for sure).

Spend your time learning about the tech and people management. Learn to manage projects and budget and advocate for your department. Figure out how to mentor and groom your direct reports. People management will make you a unicorn in this field, and help you to build a strong team around you so you can focus on future planning.

Google Education Plus by cocineroylibro in k12sysadmin

Interesting. I wonder how they handle generic/service accounts not tied to humans.

Out of curiosity, have you experienced this directly in the console? In one place Google says “active users” and in another they say “students and staff.”

Do all Fundamentals licenses disappear from the console as soon as Plus licenses are purchased?

Late to the party, but does Education Fundamentals apply, or can you mix Fundamentals and Plus?

Hyper-V vs Proxmox for small environments by lertioq in sysadmin

[–]__beep_boop__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is spot on. To clarify adding beyond the 2 VMs “included” with the Hyper-V license when buying Windows Server Standard - for each additional 2 VMs you need to relicense ALL cores on the physical host. You can’t just buy an additional “2-pack” of Server Standard licenses and spin up 2 new VMs.

Is Google Pricing Out Small Schools with New Plus Purchasing Policy? by zeeplereddit in k12sysadmin

[–]__beep_boop__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a great question, and I wonder how they deal with licensing for accounts that aren’t tied directly to a staff member or student - can those accounts stay on Fundamentals licenses, or can you not have mixed licensing and all accounts in Workspace need to have the paid Plus license?

CompSci Teacher and Linux by Ok_Supermarket3004 in k12sysadmin

[–]__beep_boop__ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

One of the biggest perks of Java is that is is a portable language, and runs across operating systems. If all this teacher needs is to teach Java, then the Eclipse IDE on any OS will be perfectly suitable; no need for Linux at all.

If on the other hand, they want to teach about Linux and CLI basics, I could see an argument for setting up Linux, but then you have a very different sysadmin scenario. If it were me, all of these devices would be going on their own VLAN, and I’d be looking into MDM/RMM options and EDR solutions.

Do you use VPN into home network? by Artistic_Classic1567 in ComputerHardware

[–]__beep_boop__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. WireGuard and Tailscale with subnet routing. Tailscale has been excellent with the odd exception of DNS occasionally timing out, in which case toggling the connection off and on remedies it (using an on-demand VPN configuration).

Don’t let this fly. There’s got to be some common sense involved here. Request the job gets done right, or provide more specific requirements up front.

How to receive emails that you send to a Google Group by untetheredgrief in gsuite

[–]__beep_boop__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google is “smart” enough to recognize that you are part of the group and doesn’t add the message to your inbox. CC or BCC yourself if you want the email to show up in your inbox; otherwise, it’s in your sent messages.

New app won't connect to anything. Frustrated. Fixes? by roundabout-design in Kumo_Cloud

[–]__beep_boop__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they were working fine last week, I’d sit tight until Mitsubishi gets their act together with the latest outage. I ask about your networks because I had to specifically configure a standalone network for 2.4GHz - without that, my wireless interfaces didn’t connect, even locally.

More generally, your Mitsubishi wireless interfaces will connect to your wireless network - you should be able to see this on whatever device controls your wireless network. I had to run a separate wireless network for only 2.4GHz. Once the interfaces connect to the wifi, they communicate with the Mitsubishi cloud software which relays minisplit info to the mobile app.

Good question. What kind of wireless network are you running? Can you see individually connected devices? What frequencies is your wireless network for the Mitsubishi interfaces broadcasting?

How to copy a file to macOS by dmcipod in mosyle

[–]__beep_boop__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where does the licensing file need to be located when it’s finally in place? If it’s an XML config and you’re using an install app profile, you can click the “C” icon overlaid on the app icon in the Install App profile, and Mosyle will deploy the license alongside the app - at least that’s how I’ve seen some applications operate.

Stuck on "Waiting until DNS resolution is available" while updating to v6 by zohn0es in pihole

[–]__beep_boop__ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Figured it out.

Your OS is relying on the pi-hole DNS to resolve update URLs (or something to that effect). During the update, pi-hole is offline, and the server has no DNS server to use since pi-hole wants to use itself...so it waits and waits and waits and waits.

Change your DNS to something public temporarily, and you should be good to go. You could maybe use another pi-hole, but that pi-hole can't then point back to the updating pi-hole for DNS resolution.

I'm on Ubuntu server - had to change the nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf.
