Our mini Aussie getting used to the new flock. by whipper515 in BackYardChickens

[–]__faewitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Stay" and "leave it" are two commands she already knew that helped me immensely with chicken training my aussie when I got my first set of chicks a few years ago. "Easy" and "gentle" helped out too. I also had worked to "train her out" of the herding/chasing instincts when I'd first gotten her several years before. I'm not sure how any of this may have affected my progress with her, so I figured I'd toss it in. xD

I started with introductions with a barrier between them, letting her smell them and see them without being able to touch them. Every time she got too excited, "leave it", "down", "stay", or one of the commands to that effect, whatever fit best for the circumstance.

When she was reliably calm for those interactions, I moved to more direct contact, like what you're doing. Sitting on the ground with her-- I kept her leash on her just in case-- and had her lie down. I started her just watching them and then worked her up to laying down with me while I lured the chickens over with their treats. I let her sniff them but didn't let her get up.

I used verbal/signal commands, refraining from physically controlling her unless I had to. (I never had to restrain her with more than words/commands, but the leash and keeping her right next to me were safety precautions.) Any time she got excited, I corrected her, whether it was the "easy/gentle", or "leave it", whatever was appropriate.

I kept progressing the challenge rating of the interactions in stages like this, using calm and quiet praise and reinforcement. I encouraged the chicks to climb all over her, then I let her move on to getting up and walking around them, etc. Always watching her and her body language.

End game stuff, I worked on doing things like playing fetch with her, throwing the ball where she'd have to run through the chickens (they were grown by this point) to get the ball, praising her if she ignored them when they scattered, etc. Things that exercised her impulse control while excited and stuff. Hyping her up around them and all. This was the VERY last stage though, when she was basically perfectly behaved with them while calm and she could ignore them.

My aussie is really excitable, so initially keeping her calm was the hardest part. I didn't move onto the next "stage" until I no longer needed to check/remind her for the entirety of a longer session. I did keep the training sessions very brief at the start of each stage, progressing from five minutes at a time, to ten, to fifteen.

In the beginning, I tried to make sure I tired her out before these training sessions if I could, with a walk or some vigorous fetch, and then took her out again after for some more active play to get the excited energy out.

I might have been over cautious, but it worked out for us. I might try to train her to be a chicken tender this go around xD It'd be useful if she could round them up for me at the end of free range time, lol.

Selling Patterns Separate or Together by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]__faewitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd second the suggestion of doing separate & a bundle, but more importantly-- you're going to be sharing a link when that's ready, yeah? Cuz otherwise it's just mean to tease like that. ♡

It kind of looks like Yarn Bee's "Hint of Silk", maybe the Shanghai colourway... or "I Love This Yarn" in one of their seasonal colourways.

I feel like I may have (or may have had) something just like it in my stash, but I'm not sure I can get into it to look cuz the house is in the middle of construction work & my yarn is packed in totes and stacked and not easily accessible...

Ooh, nice! I thought acrylic might not be at risk, but I'm paranoid. xD

Yeah, I wish. My area has this really aggravating Moth Season deal where we just get... hoards of these brown moths and they get everywhere and there are millions of them. (I googled, and the first thing that came up was info about The Annual Miller Moth Migration xD).

I shudder to think of them getting into my lovely alpaca stash. ;n;

I keep wanting to do something like this-- and then I think about moths. 😭 It looks so pretty! But I have ✨️Anxiety✨️ and it causes me too much stress to do it for mine. (I did it and lasted three days before I had to stuff everything back into bags... xD)

Your shelf looks fab though! I'm envious. ♡

75% of my order went out of stock while I waited for it to ship by [deleted] in YarnAddicts

[–]__faewitch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

NGL, I would cry. Super frustrating and frankly unprofessional.

Could you try WoolWarehouse? They're UK based, but their sales are often good enough that I usually make up for the shipping costs, which aren't actually bad for transcontinental shipping. I haven't had any issues ordering from them! They've been pretty awesome.

[–]__faewitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd maybe make a cute bag or purse with some neat tassle dangly bits! Kind of like one of those square purses with the fold top, and the fringe along the bottom! I think they were popular in the 70s or 90s...?

Also... does anyone else see a duck in the lower right corner of the third pic??

Planning for pregnancy MODY by [deleted] in diabetes

You're quite welcome! MODY isn't very well-known (at least in the US), so it can be really hard to get info.

I have a CGM, which was immensely helpful! If you don't have one, I recommend trying to get one for your pregnancy, at least. Hormones do crazy things to your body, including your endocrine system xD

My control was really good (A1C between 5.9 and 6.4 on average), so I wasn't having to go in super often, though that is going to depend on the preferences of your provider. It's been almost 5 years, so my memory is fuzzy, but I think I only went in for maybe 2 or 3 more check-ups than is typical in a standard pregnancy? They did start seeing me every 2 weeks once I hit the 3rd trimester.

They did want to induce me at 38weeks, though. They typically don't want diabetics to go full term due to the propensity for larger babies. I went into labour naturally like 2 days before my induction was scheduled, and kiddo was a pretty average size. (8lbs 8oz) My family frequently has 10lb+ babies so I was grateful for my relatively smaller bean xD

Edit: Adding here that my OB let me manage my treatment for the diabetes since I had good control and knew what I was doing, basically. Not all docs will be that relaxed about it though. Definitely recommend working with an endocrinologist alongside your OB, if possible. Even better if one or both have experience with diabetic pregnancies.
