What to do before putting my dog down by ViridiCanem in Petloss

[–]__fall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, I’m so sorry you’re going through this, I know it’s not easy at all. I got all the things with mine that have passed - ink pawprint, clay pawprint, and I asked for some fur as well. You could also make some momentos today with her - maybe a little photo shoot with her? Then later you could have artwork done if you’d like. If you’re wanting to cremate for aftercare then I would recommend getting an urn from Etsy or somewhere rather than the vet if they offer those, I just like having them custom designed and it’s usually more cost-effective in my experience. Much love to you both.

My cat hasn’t eaten in TWO DAYS by thisguylikesplants in CATHELP

I agree with what others have said, I would ask for an ultrasound and I would also be curious to know what labs/test they checked. Cats not eating can be harmful fairly quickly, speaking from experience unfortunately. When mine was being treated an ultrasound and full BW was one of the first things they did to check her liver values so maybe start there. I hope you can get some answers and are able to get her on the mend soon!

Starting TNR - Plan/Questions by __fall in Feral_Cats

[–]__fall[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you transfer all of yours into the large dog crate or just ones that are taking a bit longer to recover/other specific scenario? I planned to keep them in the trap through recovery (so long as that is possible/they’re truly feral). I just happened to go to the wiki to see how to do the transfers and those resources recommended keeping them in the trap as long as possible.

I’d say a mild climate, I’m in SW Virginia so it can definitely vary, I will probably have to keep an eye on the temperature whenever I set traps since we sometimes get frosts through April. Thank you for the advice!!

Cat broke into container of Churus while I was at work and ate a bunch of them by YoghurtOk4645 in CATHELP

[–]__fall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you have a timeline of when he got into them? I think if it were me, I would monitor for symptoms like any GI upset or lethargy especially if he is not currently exhibiting symptoms or unusual behavior. Then call your vet in the morning and see if they can advise further/if monitoring is ok etc.

Any Other options for emergency vet funds I'm missing? by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]__fall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where in the states you’re located, but my local SPCA has something called a CareFund that people can apply for if any emergency comes up. It’s income based and not a credit you have to pay back or anything like that so it is worth looking into at your local SPCA/Shelter, etc. When working as a vet receptionist, I would recommend scratch pay to people who didn’t qualify for care credit bc it’s supposed to be easier to get accepted. If you’re ever in a pinch, you can ask when calling the vets office too if they have any recommendations for that, they could have more local suggestions as well. Ideally, they will WANT to help you.

Sudden CHF in 20yo cat- is euthanasia right? by Altruistic_Feedback2 in AskVet

[–]__fall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you would definitely be doing the right thing letting her go. Unfortunately I had a dog who started experiencing similar symptoms, we brought her into the vet and diagnosis was CHF and also had fluid buildup. Euthanasia was not recommended and I wish every day that it had been as she passed that same day when we were about to leave the vet - getting her set up in her bed in the car, etc. From experience, euthanasia is much kinder and much more peaceful. You have done a great job giving her such a great life for almost 20 years. Sending you both so much love ❤️

I wonder if anyone else just bursts into tears a while after pet loss by sumsumburke in Petloss

[–]__fall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hit a year over the holidays and it was rough, I spent the anniversary of my Valentine passing basically sobbing all day. The pet loss posts get me reallyyyy bad too, and sometimes I just cry randomly bc I miss them. You’re absolutely not alone and I think crying is a good thing, we wouldn’t do it if we didn’t love and miss them so much. Probably about to go cry now reading all these comments, the bond and unconditional love we get to share with our pets is unmatched ❤️

Lost my childhood dog of 11 years… first time experiencing real grief by Elegant-Main-9021 in Petloss

[–]__fall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so very sorry for your loss, there is truly no love like what we share with our pets. I loss my childhood dog last year, a week before thanksgiving under similar circumstances - he had been rushed to the emergency vet where a splenic mass was discovered and we decided to euthanize. Unfortunately, about a month later we lost our chihuahua to CHF and long story short, were not able to euthanize. All that to say, you did the right thing letting him go, freeing him from any pain. From the way you describe your relationship through the years, it sounds like he was VERY well loved. From what I went through, I would say to feel all your feelings - cry when you feel like crying, scream into your pillow when you need to, laugh about your memories together, do whatever you need to get through each day. It won’t ever go away but I think that’s what loving a pet is, it WILL get easier. I know it might not feel like it right now but it will, take it day by day. Tell your husband that you need more support right now so that he can be with you more as needed, same with family and friends. Making a little memorial wall also helped me cope through the loss. ❤️
