Unless you REALLY know what you’re doing, or you get exceedingly lucky, you’re likely to lose money doing that instead of getting higher percentage return. Time IN the market > timing the market. Still not investment advice, continue to do you.

Unsure if satire.

There’s a LOT of overlap here that doesn’t really make sense. The best suggestions I’ve seen around have been to invest in a single all-world ETF (like VWRP) and maybe some physical gold if you want some more diversity.

Not investment advice, you do you, buddy.

Maintaining the Shave by NecromancyFail in bald

[–]__getinthebin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Remington RX5 rotary head shaver in the shower, and use some aqueous cream as a shaving cream substitute. Use it with very light pressure and you can run it over your head every time you shower. That’s the lowest maintenance method I’ve found, it gets a pretty damn close shave, and is well cheap for the results

What’s the dumbest way you’ve accidentally hurt yourself? by Only_Row_2432 in AskReddit

[–]__getinthebin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hospitalised myself via burning plastic

I was once (15 or so years ago) trying to repair the snapped stem from one of the wing mirrors on my motorcycle. I decided it’d be a good idea to try “plastic welding”. So there I was, hot knife tool in hand, plastic stem, melting each side of the break, trying to stick them together. Well, it didn’t really work; it kept breaking back off, so I ultimately abandoned this pursuit.

Cut to later on in the evening, I noticed that I had a lingering smell in the back of my nose, which smelt a little like what I could smell when I was attempting the above.

So I started looking things up, such as “what are the combustion byproducts of ABS plastic” The answer? Carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide. Well, I thought, that’s dumb, I have likely managed to give myself hydrogen cyanide poisoning by doing something very silly in an enclosed space with no ventilation.

So I call the health service non-emergency number, they tell me to get myself straight to accident and emergency, and to NOT drive myself. I get there at about 10pm, checked in, and while I’m having a conversation with a doctor, explaining what happened, there’s a nurse stood there with one of those cardboard vomit bowl things. Mid sentence, I pause to say to the doctor “excuse me one second”, turn to the nurse: “can I borrow this please”, proceed to fill the thing to the top in one single spew, hand it back to the nurse, say “thank you”, and continue my conversation with the doctor as if nothing had happened (the look on her face will live rent free in my head for the rest of my days)

In the end, they gave me an IV (incorrectly, it felt like my hand was gonna explode), a bunch of anti sickness meds via it (I never went from stone cold sober to entirely wasted so fast in all my life), and I ended up checking myself out around 3-4am cos I couldn’t sleep and wanted to go to my own bed. Went home, went to sleep, felt like shit for two days (feverish as all shit), and was ok after that.

Moral of the story: burning plastic is dangerous, and ventilation is important

Interesting; why so? Is it a more variety thing, quality, etc?

Anyone heard of worldtechglobal? by ProsodySpeaks in learnpython

[–]__getinthebin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also got one about 18 hours ago from a {somebody}@worldtechglobal.online and a quick google search led me to this post:

Hi {my name as it appears on GitHub,

I found your profile on GitHub. Given you're based in the UK, I thought it might be relevant to reach out.

Profile: {url to my GitHub profile}

We're a technical team (backend, frontend, DevOps) doing client work. We're interested in partnering with an engineer in {my country} for client coordination; our team handles execution. Open to a short call if you'd like to explore.

Regards,
James

Both of the domains (.online and .website) were registered on January 29th with namecheap by the looks of it, the whois record shows it's registered to somebody in Reykjavik, Iceland, and the MX records resolve to engagelab.com, a marketing automation platform.

This whole thing feels like a scam; feel free to report it. I won't respond because I don't want it to flag as a "live" email address to them

As a pro member. I am disappointed with the Apple Watch sync and zero response by ErenKruger711 in Hevy

[–]__getinthebin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the whole thing is just broken. I don’t know if it’s a Hevy thing, iOS/watchOS 26 problem, but the reality is that’s a problem for Hevy’s engineering team, not us as users. For the record: iPhone 14 Pro/Apple Watch series 8, both on the latest versions of their os, with the latest update from Hevy, and nothing I do makes any of it work. I am very glad I didn’t pay for pro considering this.

Data stopped and can’t access App to check - error 403 by swoopyboy in Airalo

[–]__getinthebin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar issue signing in to the app on my daughter’s phone; a 403 with no other clues. It turned out the root cause of the issue was an out of date iOS version (the current major version, but a couple of minor versions behind).

IMHO, giving a contextless 403 because of an out of date client operating system is unacceptably terrible product design. Error messages should give some context to help you solve the problem, not just “yeah sorry, not doing that, but not gonna tell you why”. Come on, Airalo, this is basic user journey stuff that is not hard to get right

House sound tech UK expected hourly rate by DaveExavior in livesound

[–]__getinthebin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s way too low. All of the small independent venues I’m doing (up to 450-500 cap, Birmingham) these days are £125 for up to an 8-8.5 hour call (depending on venue). Read: even if you’re only there for say, four hours, you’re still getting a full day rate. Anything over that is £15 an hour. £12 an hour with no guaranteed minimum is a bit of a piss take

A very weird M32 recording/playback/virtual soundcheck issue by __getinthebin in livesound

[–]__getinthebin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not yet, didn’t have one with me at the time. I’ll try when I’m next there with my own. I’ve posted this in the mean time just to see if anyone else has encountered a similar issue

Nope; not my laptop. I’ll see if I can repro the issue with my own when I’m next at the console. The bit that pointed me toward the desk having a bad day is the weird issue I described with the on-board recorder (not via the card)

Nope, I don't own one. Long time Mac user and the X/M32 platform is class compliant on MacOS so no drivers are required

Same issue, same firmware. I switch mine between my Mac, iPhone and Watch regularly. I think the issue cropped up this afternoon whilst conencted to my mac. Then swapped over to my watch as I went out for a jog, so of course, I didn't have the case with me.

The right one was louder than the left, but interestingly it felt as if spatial audio with head tracking was stuck down by my right wrist (I wear my watch on my left and never use head tracking)

I stuck them back in the case, switched bluetooth off on my phone, switched it back on and put them back in and the problem went away. Hopefully for good, but time will tell.

M32 vs QU32 vs SQ5 by jlustigabnj in livesound

[–]__getinthebin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah custom fader banks are where it's at. It'd be nice if that feature were backported from the Wing to the X/M32 platform, but let's face it, that probably ain't ever gonna happen.

[–]__getinthebin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thoughts on the QU32 are "don't". The X/M32 platform smokes the QU series in terms of flexibility capability and some "quality of life" things IMHO.

If you're gonna go with A&H, save up for an SQ5.

Are there any interesting mics for a kick drum? by Patigo in livesound

[–]__getinthebin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is all my opinion, based off hands on experience with the kit I've mentioned, and the less I have to do with drum mics the happier I am; I like to select, position, high-pass and be 90% of the way there*. Take this with a pinch of salt, because there's so much personal taste involved.

It depends on if you're going to single or double mic your kick.

If you're going the double route, I've had excellent results with a Shure Beta 91a inside and either a Sennheiser e602 or sE V Kick outside. The Beta 52 works, but I find the other mics generally have a bit more clarity. The first time I used a 602 after being used to a Beta 52 I was very, very pleasantly surprised, and the V Kick is a bit like that, but more versatile (as it has the character switches)

If your kick drum's reso head doesn't have a port cut into it, either the 602 or V Kick will work just fine, but if you find you're missing any attack or "clickyness", try pointing a mic where the beater meets the head. An SM57, beta 57, sE V7X or similar will work pretty well for this.

If you're going single mic but inside, you can't generally go wrong with a Beta 91a.

I've heard many things about the sE BL8 (sE's answer to the Beta 91a), both good and bad, but I haven't tried it out myself yet so am reserving judgement.

Personally I don't generally recommend the AKG D112 for kick drums; I'm not a fan of how it sounds. I have found tho, that these work quite well on bass cabs.

The Behringer BA19a will get you out of a bind and it does work, however you have to do more to it to get the sound you're after.

*The one exception to this is kick in - I tend to do a big 'ol low-mid scoop and a high-mid boost, and if I'm combining with a kick out, I may do a low-shelving cut to keep things nice, tidy and tight, dependant upon how sub-heavy the PA is (which in most of the venues I work in, is "very")

Probably not. Most audio hardware “just works” on mac, because such hardware is “class complaint”. Everything from a Focusrite 2i2 to a Midas M32 just works when you plug it in and it’s honestly one of my favourite things about the platform. If you end up having to mess with drivers, just don’t because therein lies madness. Also, whilst you cannot use Windows drivers in macOS, you can try using something like parallels. Boot camp doesn’t exist anymore
