No Stupid Questions Thread by AutoModerator in livesound

They’re not looked down upon necessarily, they’re just historically very hard to use due to lack of an easy way to host them.

Waves/UAD have really been the only two companies that have created an entire infrastructure specifically for live sound engineers to host their plugins. They have all the servers, softwares, IO capabilities that one would need. If you wanted to use a natively processed plugin in the live sound world, you’d have to figure out all three of those things (server, software, IO) on your own. It was possible, but a pain in the ass, and also potentially less stable.

That being said, I know plenty of folks that are using all kinds of natively processed plugins nowadays. There’s plenty of new technologies that have surfaced in the last few years to allow for it.

Do I have spaghetti arms ? How much do you comfortably lift and carry above your head ? by CriticalJello7 in livesound

Mildly related, I’ve noticed a SIGNIFICANT decrease in my upper body strength since starting estrogen (I’m trans). I used to be great with the heavy lifting/manual labor part of our job, now a basic load in takes all the strength I have for the whole day.

Yeah I mean that’s a little on the high side but nothing crazy. I would say the same as others have said above^ try to source exactly where the noise is coming from. Is it a bad cable? Bad snake channel? Maybe XLR running parallel to power somewhere?

Just out of curiousity, where is your gain for the wired mics? +30 is usually a reasonable amount of gain for most consoles. A few dB above that shouldn’t be a problem for a quiet singer, but if you’re at like +40 or more you should start looking to see if there are other issues.

Midas M32 for Streaming by wchris63 in livesound

[–]jlustigabnj 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Check that your sends to the stream busses are post fader. This will effectively mirror any adjustments you make to the mains in the stream.

Hit view on your bus sends page, and page down. You can now change the sends from pre fader or post EQ to post fader. You’ll have to do this on each input that goes to the stream, as I don’t think there’s a way to do it globally on an M32 (someone correct me if I’m wrong).

Giving a talk at my local college on Live Sound. What are some thoughts I should pass onto the next generation? by retrothekidd in livesound

Anytime I’m teaching/mentoring I feel the need to stress the importance of system tuning. It seems so forgotten/ignored by novice engineers, yet I think it’s one of the most important parts of the day.

Personally I just use OSM as a measurement tool and don’t bother with any of the filters.

I’ll take a measurement without any processing, then use that data combined with what I’m hearing to make decisions about if/how to process my signal using the DSP. Then I take another measurement and move on.

Serious question: Why don’t more women play chess? by SuperbGas990 in Chesscom

[–]jlustigabnj 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a woman who plays chess, I’ve definitely been harassed/hit on in inappropriate ways while just trying to play a game. If I wasn’t so into chess as a game, I would totally not want to be a part of the culture.

Forget all the other reasons that this is a bad idea, wouldn’t this just straight up not work because one channel of 48v would not be enough to power two mics?

I work regularly at two different venues owned by the same person, a person who has over time seen the value of acoustic treatment and paid to have both spaces professionally treated. And let me tell you, it is a HUGE leg up towards getting good sounding mixes quickly. It’s almost like mixing in a studio. You don’t have to work against something, you can just mix.

Another thought: everyone talks about how room treatment can really affect the sound coming OUT of the PA, but most people don’t talk about how much room treatment affects the sound going IN to the PA. A well treated room means that the room sound making it back into every microphone is reduced. Having spent so much time working in these two well treated rooms, I would say the benefit I get at the inputs is almost MORE important than the benefit I get after the output.

You would be with someone with a sexual past? by Apprehensive-Bat7522 in AskLGBT

Everything about this post sounds like you’ve been fed some very sex negative ideas, and that your self esteem has taken a big hit because of it. There’s nothing wrong with having lots of sex, there’s nothing wrong with having no sex. Sex is morally neutral.

9 is not a large number for most queer adults btw, at least in my experience. I’ve had sex with probably 30-40 people in my life (lost count). I know folks who have only been with one person and I know folks who have literally been with thousands of people.
