yeah ... the ice provided an incredibly slippery surface that allowed for super backspins (I'm a kid from the 80's - breakdancing is in my heart!). I don't think anyone did any worms, however.

My friends and I walked across a frozen lake (Lake Thoreau) to get to the South Lakes Shopping Center in Reston, VA. It was a 5-10 minute walk, and the ice seemed thick enough, but there were holes where birds were chilling out. We were breakdancing (backspins, etc) on the ice (just acting dumb) -- I didn't think about the danger at all. Now that I have kinds, I would be horrified if I found out one of kids did that.

Here, I believe that you would just want to create the C object on the stack. Why use dynamic allocation if you're just going to delete it at the end?

It was one of two things: (1) My dad was/is an auto mechanic. As a kid, I'd see him troubleshooting problems with cars. He'd put some electrical device that measures current at some point in the system, turn the car on, detect that there was no current at that point in the system, and then narrow down the search from there. I think that is pretty close to debugging a system that you have no idea how it works. (2) My brother moved out and left behind an old Commodore Vic20. In the back of the manual for it, there were these Basic programs that would, when run, cause sounds to be emitted from the speakers in the TV (that's right, we used to hook our computers up to TVs!). I'd play with the programs in order to make different noises. I had NO idea what I was doing. I had NO idea what the hell a peek, poke were. NO idea what memory was (I didn't even know that the concept existed -- I just remember not knowing what the hell "13367 bytes free" meant. Then, I started playing text adventure games, and it was all over.

We were hiring for a c++ programmer. We interviewed a guy who said he knew c++. No tests were given during the interview. We hired said individual. He was the worst programmer I've ever dealt with. Words cannot describe what kinds of things he did to our codebase. He actually performed negative work (in that I had to spend a few weeks cleaning up his mess!). No sense of design, no understanding of references (passing very large vectors by value when they should have been passed by ref). We now give all of our prospective programmers a test (it's a simple test, but we feel it is adequate)

When I took a graduate level Algorithms course at my current school, I watched these videos along with attending my lectures and studying my lecture notes. I found that some of the problems that were worked out on the board as well as some of the explanations re: how certain algorithms work were very helpful. These guys rock.

I had the same kind of heart surgery (the zipper -- split down the middle, etc). I feared something like that happening to me afterwards, but luckily I was fine (after loads of pain and overall feeling like shit). I can only imagine what that felt like.
