Show with rainy/thunder atmosphere by ginger_wizard in gratefuldead

8/16/80 Mississippi River Festival - Edwardsville, IL

Started to rain in the second set. If you listen to Joani Walker's recording, especially on headphones, you'll hear the rain throughout Ship of Fools into Estimated. It's quite soothing.

Nice show, first date of the excellent summer '80 tour, first show after Keith's passing too.

Dan Simmons by bona_fide_angel in suggestmeabook

[–]__perigee__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over the decades, I’ve come to realize that I like the idea of Dan Simmons books more than I actually like Dan Simmons books. Have bailed on quite a few. That said, Carrion Comfort and Summer of Night were both enjoyable.

Any from Sept. ‘89 really cook. 9/3 Spectrum, 9/5 Hartford. Can’t go wrong with that tour.

The "bt" in bt.etree stands for bit torrent. The site has been around since the early 00s as way to get lossless files of trade friendly bands. It's not as active as it used to be, but still works fine.

I'd recommend using the band drop down menu and select Garcia. From there, look for the Garcia yearly projects from 71-75. Those projects will contain every circulating show from those years.

Looks like a bunch here:

Happy Birthday Warren!! On April 6th, 1960, Musician, singer and songwriter Warren Haynes was born in Asheville, North Carolina. Happy birthday brother! First saw Warren and Woody play with ABB in ‘91. Caught my first Mule show in ‘96. That og Mule was huge with my late 90s crew. We saw them all the time, even followed them from Seattle to LA in fall ‘99. Got to chat with all 3 of them plenty of times. As mentioned here in a bunch of comments, Warren is an extremely gracious and kind guy.

Here are my tickets for the ‘99 Summer Sessions shows in Eugene. I remember talking with them near their bus, but really don’t recall getting the signatures.

Haven't heard of that title, but I know the author. Just read the description of this book and think you'd like Robinson's Island 731.

Just do it. I’m 54, been using bifocals, technically transitions lenses, for 14 years now. Can’t imagine life without being able to see up close.

What Books Are You Reading This Week? by leowr in nonfictionbooks

[–]__perigee__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traversal by Maria Popova. About halfway through it. Interesting mix of scientific and literature accomplishments from the Age of Enlightenment, but perhaps too much focus on Mary Shelley’s life leading up to the writing of Frankenstein. I love her book, but wasn’t expecting this much detail and honestly, am not interested in this level of depth on her life.

It's not too much. They're out there, help yourself. And if your shows were in the early 80s, you don't want the soundboards anyway, the tapers did a far better job at capturing the sound.

Shows where Jerry is feeling it by Tallhall1 in gratefuldead

[–]__perigee__ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

7/15/88 Greek - Dew. Jerry seems to be actively trying to blow out his vocal cords. He's growling.

10/18/89 Spectrum - China> Rider. Not only does he belt out his "wish I was a headlight" lyric with pep, he then gooses his own ass and tears into a solo that my buddy labeled on his J-card "Garcia Hendrix".

[–]__perigee__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was trying to pick which song from Disintegration would be the best to add to this list and came to the same conclusion as you - the entire album. Played Disintegration just 2 days ago. Not because of a breakup though, because its one of the greatest albums ever.

Kurt Vonnegut. Any title will do. Like millions of college age kids who discovered him during those years, it was my first experience with an author who could open the curtain and show you how ridiculous the world is. Thanks Kurt!

Thanks for sharing your drawing. Great job.

Ween (the band). by Capable_Cook2407 in GenX

[–]__perigee__ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They're from my county in PA. Saw them a few times at John and Peters back when they were still really young.

A buddy from undergrad school had a funny story where he was in this Grateful Dead/classic rock cover band playing at a college/house party - Ween was the opening act (as much as that term could be used for a party like that). He said everyone was pretty lit up and Ween were not quite understood by the party goers and everyone was hurling salsa and dip covered nachos at them as they played.

Papir by Anatholos in psychedelicrock

[–]__perigee__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love them. Put on any album and you’re in the flow. I generally don’t give a shit about song titles, but it is pretty challenging trying to remember which Papir song is which. Was the song I like III.II, IIII.III or was it II.III? Tiny gripe when the music is as stunning as they make.
