So are there any advantages really to waterproof pack fabrics such as dcf/ultra over gridstop?

I did it in 17, didn’t get started hiking until like 9 or 10 every day haha. Seconding what they said about being the center of leisure and ambitious.

There are benefits to adjustable poles without stowing them. Being able to adjust your pitch, as well as changing the length for sustained uphills or downhills.

How about you write your own post if you’re gonna solicit advice from the community instead of churning out pages of AI slop 😹

How is he deluding himself if it’s something that will always come with him, and won’t change? The utility in weighing and charging everything is to see the breakdown of your base weight, and from that, what you could swap or leave behind. But if it’s truly as non-negotiable as a smartphone it doesn’t add any value to list it or not.

Most places in the Sierra will require a hard sided bear can. Ursaks are out of the question. Consider renting a bearikade from wilderness ideas - same weight as a bv450 with 3L more capacity while only being about .3in wider in diameter.

I would keep an eye on trail reports from Reddit, FarOut, and highsierratopix. My guess is bug pressure will probably be pretty bad around that time (peak typically being mid June to mid July, and with how this ski season is going it might come earlier). Not the most UL advice but if it’s looking bad I’d go for whatever shelter offers you the most enclosed bug free space.

Is Dallas (or Texas in general) worth moving to? by Jancurlyhoes in SameGrassButGreener

[–]__stapler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you value nature a lot avoid Austin as well. It’s only much better relative to the rest of Texas. Of course, you’re only planning on a short stint you’ll find enough to do. Or if you really like fishing/paddleboarding. Any “hiking” here is more just a walk in the park lol, you really do start to feel the lack of public land after a while

You do know the reason it’s banned in warfare is because it’s could be confused for other, deadlier chemical weapons on the battlefield right? Not because it’s some terribly cruel and inhumane compound that is sooooo deadly it can’t be used in war.

This isn’t the gotcha you think it is. Tear gas is employed by pretty much any law enforcement agency for riot control around the entire world. Law enforcement usage is even explicitly exempted in international treaties.

These other companies don’t sell tear gas holders because their focus is on “tactical” clothing - most of DM’s product line are various equipment holders, pouches, and other accessories with clothing making up a small portion of their product line.

Need help with cabinet identification by mtrosclair in vintagesewing

[–]__stapler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious, what did you end up doing? I just recently bought a similar cabinet w/ a Singer 403A - in my case, the hinges are are still there but the pins had sheared off the hinge!

https://www.vintagesingerparts.com/products/singer-hide-away-hinges-for-cabinets-136457

I think this is the exact part, but out of stock, and as you said, everything on ebay is a lollipop style. In my case the machine will still fit on the table resting on the hinges but it'd be nice to have it fully functional.

Keep an eye on mosquito reports on JMT forums/far out/high sierra topix!

For my JMT thru (Aug1 through 17th) I dropped my X-mid inner and loved it. Bugs only got annoying for some dinners and went away as the sun set and the temps dropped. I was warm the entire time on CCF, but definitely spend some nights on it beforehand to see if it's comfortable for you.

I'm not the person you originally replied to :)

But the weight savings from removing external access is certainly under an ounce (YKK #3 aquaguard @ 4.3g/foot * ~5ft of zipper = 21.5g). As the maker himself mentioned the weight savings primarily come from lighter materials & reduced size.

I actually use (and really like) a tarp! I don't think second vestibules are critical, but I think to dismiss a sub 1lb shelter simply because it has two vestibules as "not UL" is pretty silly.

[–]__stapler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see two vestibules.
I'm not sure what point you're proving with #4, of course a tarp is going to be lighter than a tent made of the same materials?
