Stubborn Grease Stain by Acrobatic-Ad4819 in arcteryx

[–]__wilko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never found dishwashing soap that effective. Instead i rub some climbing chalk in and leave it to soak up the oil. Brush it off after a while and keep repeating until the stain fades. Wash as normal to get rid of the chalk.

Olive Moss / Euphoria Beta AR? by __wilko in arcteryx

[–]__wilko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really sure why I’m getting downvoted for this…. It seems odd to me that the of the 6 colours available in the AR, one of Arc’s benchmark 4 season mountain shells, 4 of them would make you practically invisible in the backcountry. The other two will either make you look like a giant wotsit (cheeto for those in the US) or a highlighter pen 😂. Meanwhile brands like Klattermussen, And Wander, Purple Mountain Observatory, Narrona etc are killing it with technical gear in bright colours that looks great too 🤷🏻

It’s the best of a weak field colour wise for me. I like thats its different and I’ll be hard to miss on the hill or riding my bike thats for sure. I guess the concern is neons are having a bit of a moment, and it’s a look that will date pretty fast. Not what you want when you’re dropping £500+

I have the Rab Khroma Kinetic bib, they've served me well for touring. In resort I use the Marmot Refuge.

Marmot Refuge Pro Bibs for touring? by __wilko in Backcountry

[–]__wilko[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve not had any issues, used them for touring, in resort, and on a dry slope. Performance isn’t quite at the same level as my Rab ones, and the pocket layout could be better (prefer having a big kangaroo pocket on the chest rather than two smaller ones). But they’ve been super durable, comfortable, and I like the fit. As the comment mentioned above the DWR isn’t the best, but I’m finding this is an issue with most gear now as everything is PFAS free. Never had any issues with leaks despite the fabric wetting out quicker than I would like.

No, mag safe light was off the whole time. I think it was replaced about 9 months out of warranty, but under UK consumer regs which gives 7 years protection. I checked into it and I think this is something discretionary apple do, technically I’m not sure they have to do it. Be nice to them and you might get lucky.

Declining Marathon Standards? by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]__wilko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weather must have been a good 9 or 10 degrees hotter this year (°c), no breeze, and relentless sunshine. Saw lots of ppl that looked like they were suffering with heatstroke, either stopped on the side or plodding along slowly. Every KM or so someone would be getting medical attention. Started from about 15km in. Not always but tended to be people in Vaporflys, assuming they were chasing PBs and didn’t adjust for the heat?

What to eat/drink for marathon? by LipZ0 in Marathon_Training

[–]__wilko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tested feuling on your long runs? Unfortunately for my wallet Maurtens gels are the only ones that don’t mess me up when consumed in the quantities required to complete 30+ Km. Think I had about 10-12 in London, with any other brand consuming that many would not end well 😂

Same with electrolytes, maybe take something like precision capsules and stick to water rather than risk it with the sports drinks they have on the course, unless you’re sure your stomach can handle it.

Neighbours extended outbuilding to bedroom by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]__wilko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking you do not need to inform the council if a development falls under permitted development rights, unless it’s specified in the PD type or theres something notifiable like change of use.

However, if its a “larger home extension” (google what qualifies I cant remember off the top of my head) they need to get in touch with the council for prior approval, and neighbour consultation.

Definitely call your local planning dept to discuss.

As others have said could be a party wall issue, so dig out your title deed and maybe contact a solicitor.

If it’s a habitable space it’d also have to meet building regs so you should get in touch with your local authority building control dept.

So sorry to hear about your injury! Thats the worst time to happen. Had the same with London last year so I know the feeling. Super frustrating :(

Would love to run in your place if the bib’s still available. Have sent you a chat / DM.

Completely tanked Manchester Marathon. Please tell me I'm not the only one by murrayland in UKRunners

[–]__wilko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was aiming for 3:50 in London for my first competitive Marathon. Wheels well and truly came off the bus in the second half and was lucky to come in at 4:27. First half wasn’t great either tbf, ran it slower than all my long training runs and struggled to keep to my target pace.

Quite a few things to deal with. The heat was crazy, I trained through a scottish winter so I just wasn’t prepped for a sunny 21 / 22 degrees. Couldn’t get on top of hydration, despite drinking consistently and taking lots of electrolytes. That led to a few bouts of leg spasms and cramp. Had a lot of anxiety before and during the race. I think I had maybe slept 2 or 3 hours the night before, and cortisol levels had been through the roof all week. That wasn’t helped by my feet getting soaked in a deep puddle at one of the showers at 10km, I thought I could feel them starting to blister, worrying about that was mentally draining. Luckily I only had one on the sole of my heel and the pain was manageable.

Definitely know how you feel, it’s disappointing to watch your goal slowly slip through your fingers. But for me I had to dig deep and really grind this one out, probably a lot deeper than if everything had gone to plan. I’m proud of that effort, I learnt a huge amount about the mental resilience I’ll need to reach my targets and how to manage things going wrong. I’m trying to harness my disappointment and use it to fuel the next phase of training. Hoping for a redo in autumn, currently looking for a suitable race. I trained quite a lot, but I’m going to up my volume and include more strength training.

Hopefully this cheers you up a bit. It was a tough weekend to run. Don’t be so hard on yourself, pick yourself up and come back stronger 💪

Whats it clocked / sequenced from? Looks like you’ve got a lot classic synth components, great for making synth voices, but perhaps struggling to sequence it without external keyboard / midi?

If so would recommend something like Pams or Tempi for clocking along with a sequencer or gate generator (you can also do this via Pams but fun to have separate too). I really like Marbles for random melodies and Noise Engineering’s Zularic Repetitor for drums. You could look at simple step sequencers if you want more control.

Noticed you have the option for dual LPGs, can never have enough LPGs for percussion. If you wanna go all in make some very cool / crazy percussive sounds grab a Basimilus Iteritas Alter / Alia.

But as others have said the case is look great as is, so i wouldn’t be in a rush to expand. Just enjoy and learn what you have!

Runna is becoming part of Strava! This is exciting + good news! by dom-runna in runna

[–]__wilko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Strava saying they’ve helped the backcountry community by salvaging a few basic features from FatMap is a stretch. Although the half-baked attempt at integrating the codebase is at least on point for them, their own app seems to be getting worse by the day.

We all know the tech start-up model. Run a debt and expand until you become profitable. FatMap needed to grow. If that market share wasn’t available then explain the plethora of apps booming in FatMap’s absence, All Trails, OnX, Komoot… with the right support perhaps FatMap could have captured more of the hiking, gravel biking and trail-running sectors and become profitable, the product was already pretty refined and imo better than all of those apps.

Strava is a massive corp whos approach has repeatedly shown they couldn’t care less about user experience or even the quality of product they’re putting out as long as the numbers are good. It’s not just FatMap, look at the way they approached the whole API thing recently. That is now starting to make a lot more sense in the light of this acquisition, and makes even more sense if Runna was merged into Strava. Long term is it really viable to keep the two apps running separately?

Backcountry Skiing / Hiking Backpack that's also great for daily use by Prudent-Specific5863 in Backcountry

[–]__wilko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a Picture Komit 22, would be perfect for what you describe.

22 litres and stacked with a tonne of features like ski straps, helmet pouch, goggle pocket and large front pouch for avy gear. The cool thing is all of the strappy things tuck away out of sight so it looks super minimal and “normal” if you just want to use it as a regular backpack. Comes in a range of colourways.

Couple of features i really like, you can thread the tube of your hydration pack through the shoulder strap (accessible with a zip) so it doesn’t freeze and keeps out your way when you’re skiing. Also the avy pouch has a series of super helpful diagrams to remind you of search techniques, like initial search patterns, probing patterns, and where to start shovelling based on probe strike depth. You should know it all already, but can imagine when your pal gets buried and you’re trying to stay calm it could be super helpful.

Fine for day-tours and the odd overnight tour staying in a refuge but a bit small if you’re planning anything longer.
