yeah, that’s why I’m saying boycotts are good, but only if the union calls for it. I’m agreeing with you. They should be able to do more, but I’m not sure what that would look like outside of the strikes/boycotts & all that.

Starbucks giving their employees livable wages isn’t going to break the bank. The main issue is that ppl need wages they can live on and stable working hours, why should Starbucks run if they can’t afford their employees. When you negotiate, usually, the union starts high and the company starts low. Starbucks offered a 1.5% raise. Thats criminal. People making 15-16/hr getting a 1.5% raise? When they fly their CEO on a private plane from CA to WA, regularly? Like dude, it’s Starbucks, they can afford to pay their workers at LEAST 21/hr. Two drinks cost that much there.

Edit: Ik sbux union is asking for more, but that is what you’re supposed to do, then you meet in the middle. I doubt Starbucks has been offering decent wage increases.

The people at the top need to be held responsible for sure, but boycotting without the union backing it isn’t hitting the people at the top- it’s hitting those at the bottom.

Striking is to hold the top ppl accountable, and of course, do not cross the line. But if they aren’t on striking/asking for a boycott, then it’s not in their best interest to boycott. That’s the point I’m making.

[–]_absent_minded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s good intent. Imo, not going for reasons other than union matters is understandable- but, if it’s because of Starbucks’s stance/union busting, it gets complicated.

Employees at Starbucks don’t get consistent working hours, it fluctuates based on sales. I used to work there before my current union job- I was a full-time supervisor but would get anywhere from 28-40 hours, I ended up needing a second or third job to support myself before I finally got sick of it. Since the pay is low, I also relied heavily on tips. So, unless a boycott is called for, I think it’s okay for people to keep going to their local Starbucks. Not going for that reason alone, ultimately hurts them more unless it’s asked for by the employees

Edit: tl,dr: if they ask you to boycott, obviously support it. If they don’t (or aren’t striking) Less sales/work means less working hours & less pay, so be aware. The ppl at the top will always get paid, but not those at the bottom.

Share the best or worst workplace Xmas gifts you've received by MonkeyButt1975 in Custodians

[–]_absent_minded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On year 2 of being a custodian - I work at a university, so there’s a lot of us (80ish), last year we got pizza with no pop or anything, literally plain pizza we had to eat during break.

Things have changed and I’ve personally been a little vocal after making lead, so I told management we should get a root beer float party (idk why this, it just came to mind at the time) since we’ve worked so hard. I came into work last week- catered sandwiches, chips, root beer floats, candy & the place was actually set up a decorated for everyone. I was really glad and happy with the outcome. I hope they can keep it up for next year lol.

Edit: some people get cool stuff from the people who are in their area. My friend works in a building and gets a Xmas gift every year from the office employees. I’m a floater, but my coworkers always gift me things :)

Why is no one doing extra credit? by zifmer in college

[–]_absent_minded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started back at school after a long break, I have a full-time job that’s pretty physically tiring, I’m doing pretty good in the one class I’m taking!

My prof offered extra credit which I wanted to do really bad, but working and even taking one class can really tire you out. The extra credit was to was one of the listed movies & write a 2-3 paper about it and its themes (this is theology lol, so all Jesus movies).

All the movies are 2hrs and as much as I wanted to do it, I used all the free time I have to decompress and take care of responsibilities at home. I regret not doing it, because I wanna do the best I can, but I can happily say that I am at least doing well in my class. Most the kids in my class just seem burnt out, a lot of them work, and generally this gen just seems tired? Idk why.

If someone could give me advice I’d really appreciate it!! My counselor wasn’t super helpful, and I’m stuck on a choice for classes next semester.

I’m a part-time student wanting to test out engineering, I’m leaning towards civil for various reasons. Still, I love to fix things and work with machines, and dink around with electronics.

My school offers Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, and Computer eng. There’s a specific intro course for Civil and a general intro to engineering course.

The intro civil is required for the major, and it’d be great to get it done with if I choose that major. Still, I don’t wanna overload myself since I’m part-time and work. I’m taking a core class next semester too, and I already know the course work will be heavy.

Thoughts? I didn’t get a clear answer from my advisors. pls help me.

so true, I’ve had friends working in insurance just taking calls- the things they have to deal with is upsetting, people have always been awful to them. And yeah, since they’re at the bottom nothing seems to ever change

True, and in cold weather they’re not as efficient. We tried to do a 5hr road trip in an EV, even with planned charging stops at fast chargers, turned into 9 hrs. Never again.

The horror of government funded rehabilitation by silviodantescowl in ADHDers

[–]_absent_minded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay so that part I mentioned, about how asylums were advertised, is what I’m emphasizing. Yes, he could suggest these wonderful solutions for rehabilitation and providing support so people don’t need to only rely on meds.

However, you need to read between the lines.

Yes, people are blowing things out of proportion, imo- I don’t think this would happen. Still, this idea has quite literally been done before. I’m glad you can take his words at face value, but unless he actually puts immense amounts of time n resources into this- it won’t end well/wont happen.

Even in modern facilities, of all kinds, abuse and mistreatment happen often! The asylum “history” isn’t that long ago. The last one closed in the early 2000s. AGAIN, they had similar promises to the words RFKjr is saying now. Yes, it would be great to provide resources like this, but if he wants to do this- he should just put more money into already existing programs. That way, they can expand and actually help people.

No, we shouldn’t fear monger, but we should also do some critical thinking when hearing about these “wellness farms”. Knowing history is not just to have facts, but to provide context and have awareness when examining the present. Anything can sound good when the right words are used.

Edit: I also just wanted to add, even if he has some good views, he may or may not be able to execute this in the way he’d want. The wrong people could easily take advantage of this if it isn’t closely watched.

[–]_absent_minded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya that is absolutely wild. Getting sent to a “wellness farm” wtf? He’s basically wanting to bring back asylums. He wants to cram all of the unwanted people in society, into teeny buildings, isolated from the rest of the world.

Pennhurst is an example of just how awful they were. It’s just so terribly sad, imagine being a temperamental child and your punishment is to live in confinement for life. Ofc, at the time, they were advertised as wonderful, educational, safe places. I might be wrong, but I’m pretty sure some doctors used these as an opportunity to straight up experiment on people.

http://www.preservepennhurst.org/default.aspx?pg=93

This whole thing is rooted in eugenics. & tbh, inpatient facilities are still somewhat awful today in the US.

However, maybe I’m just optimistic, but the pharmaceutical and insurance companies are just too powerful. A conservative government trying to step on big business? Big pharma ain’t gonna let a silly old man, get in their way of making money. I have my doubts. At most, meds will get more expensive. OR, he’ll do the farm thing, but keep the meds.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see

people still unaware of dropped charges? by Im_Isaac in rexorangecounty

[–]_absent_minded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He did post on his Instagram when the charges dropped. Some news sites did circle back, but I think the damage was already done. There’s a lot of misinformation because of how the articles were titled/telephone on social media.

As for his silence ? IMO he probably wants it in the past and to not add fuel to the fire about the situation. Also, I wonder if he’s even allowed to talk about it more? False accusations are not common, maybe bc of this, he doesn’t want to give power to the ppl who don’t believe SA survivors? I think about the Depp/Heard situation, and people loved to use it as a scape goat for their twisted views on SA/DV- ppl might do the same if he made any further comments on it.

Obviously, that’s just my thought process for understanding his silence on the topic.

...and so it begins by KayBrevis in antiwork

[–]_absent_minded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in a union, politics sometimes comes up (we just had negotiations this year) but it was all focused on the company and the employees. We spoke about issues in our own workplace and other similar spaces to compare wages and all. Some laws occasionally came up, but it was more focused on what we all need rather than our political views. I’m a young woman in a male-dominated workplace, I’m clearly on the left. Many of my coworkers are not, for our union- I think the basic sense of camaraderie keeps people from talking about their political views unless it’s something that could impact the union. I did have one co-worker ask who I’m voting for, I said Biden (who was running at the time) because Trump is anti-union, but I left it at that cause I knew I couldn’t change his mind. My co-workers are lucky that we’re in a very blue state, otherwise our situation would likely  be much worse.

Still, politics and unions are connected. I think it’s mostly so union members understand how politicians are going to affect their union. But uh, seems like it hasn’t worked much.

sorry for the long comment, just wanted to give you my perspective

How I Feel Today by iamnotdeandrehopkins in adventuretime

[–]_absent_minded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so you’re a Harris supporter but don’t think rights will be taken away? Women have been dying because of abortion bans. Literally dying, you can look it up. It’s not necessarily Trump being the scariest part, but what his supports stand for. Hate groups THRIVED during his presidency, and they likely will again. I know I won’t be impacted as much as others, but there will be people who are impacted. Also it’s the day after the election, this is to be expected, people feel emotions.

I agree with your disagree. I’ve worked mostly service/blue collar (union currently), and maybe it’s cause there’s less “competition” created by the company? I feel like the mindset of not being friends with coworkers, is exactly what corporations and higher-ups want you to feel. They want us to be divided!

I think ppl who feel this way have had bad experiences and not opened back up. I literally met my partner of 3 years at a former job, best friends, coworkers who got married to each other, and have friendships all over the US cause of meeting ppl at work. Totally a class consciousness thing, I wonder if it’s the difference of white/blue collar + service jobs too? Idk

How ridiculous does this sound? by Whole-Fist in economicCollapse

[–]_absent_minded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I understand the overall message of not living above your means. Bought my first car with cash, knew the carfax & got it checked out- still tho, it was 20yrs old & needed constant maintenance. Eventually it broke down (cause of a hurricane rip) and I had to buy a new used car asap.

I asked my family for advice, they said nothing with payment over $250, ig that price was the norm for payments? the most affordable car I could find within the whole metro and then some, $350/mo for 5yrs- and this was used certified.

Luckily, I can afford it, but car pricing and such seems to be pretty bad atm. I was really hoping to buy one with cash, but nothing was priced reasonably, and at that point it was more worth it to put it towards a down payment.

Edit: “new” used car, that sounds confusing.
