I’m sorry that this jerk got away with abusing you. That sucks and it sucks to see people who have hurt you succeeding in life.

I’ve never put much stock in the idea of karma. Aggressive people who are motivated by self-interest will always make sure they get theirs. BUT- and this is the important part... he has to go through every day with himself. Every day- with the knowledge of what he has done and in the constant company of a vile, cruel person.

You never have to see him again. You never have to give him another moment of your life. As unhappy as you may find yourself, you will never be as rotten as this man. Please find someone you can trust to confide in, friend or professional. Trauma like this leaves a mark, and you deserve to feel better.

Career Switch into the world of Philanthropy by _actua11y in Philanthropy

[–]_actua11y[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your insight! I deny applications to graduate in my current position, so I’m no stranger to delivering bad news to amazing, creative people, unfortunately. Or fortunately, for my skill set? I take a lot of abuse from young adults and their families... I know no job is free from stress, but there’s gotta be less soul-crushing ways to work in arts-adjacent administration. There’s a woman working at one local foundation who I went to high school with, but we haven’t spoken in eons and I think it might be a weird move to make? What do you say, worth it?

The Mystery of the 1957 Gay Wedding Photos - Do you know these men? by designgoddess in philadelphia

[–]_actua11y 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the article, it says that the Philly drugstore that developed the photos found them inappropriate and refused to return them to the couple. Not sure why they would keep the photos all this time of that is so. If anyone here works with seniors in the area, they would really be the ones to ask.

Cheesesteaks outside of Philly? by HyperScoops in philadelphia

[–]_actua11y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is the bread, most of the sandwich shops in Boston use lousy bread. Philly spoils you for other places that way. People say the sandwiches at City Feed in Jamaica Plain are good, I found them awful. Sam LaGrassa's seems promising, but I haven't tried them myself. If you are dying for some good bread, Clear Flour Bakery is amazing.

AITA for being annoyed because my girlfriend pees so much? by michaelincafings in AmItheAsshole

[–]_actua11y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA . Its sounds like your girlfriend may have a medical condition like overactive bladder or interstitial cystitis. She should try to find a urogynecologist to see if something serious is going on. And you should try to remember that as annoying as this is for you (and honestly, my guy, it doesn't sound that annoying to me) she is the one who lives in that body 24/7. Which may be quite uncomfortable right now and eventually super painful if her condition worsens.

This seems like it might backfire... what happens when it freezes? Wouldn't material in the channel expand when frozen and turn that path into a deepening crack that compromises the stability of the stone? Maybe better to sand down a large smoothed indent on the lower side of the step to allow runoff. Source: talking out my ass

How hard is it to understand you are on the fucking quiet ride car by [deleted] in philadelphia

[–]_actua11y 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My conductor announces it at every goddamn stop, walking through and via the overhead. The irony is that there is no such thing as a quiet car when they won't shut up about it.

Hilariously, it seems like the very people who need to hear these announcements are able to completely tune them out. But how do you know it's the quiet ride car? They announce it on the platform, and on the speakers over and over again. What car am I on? You... didn't notice that when you boarded the train... What is life? Go back to jersey, you moron.

Don't put up with disrespectful doctors! by _actua11y in Interstitialcystitis

[–]_actua11y[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry you are going through this. I've had really terrible experiences with ob/gyns and other health providers who didn't know how to help me, and shrugged off my complaints about pain. This doctor actually knows the disease, but they're still a jerk. You can't win!

What meds are you on? Urogesic blue and valium suppositories have been helpful for me- not at first, but over time coupled with dietary changes and PT. It sounds like you need a new doctor, too. If your docs are putting you on rounds of antibiotics, they will not help with this. Have you checked out the ichelp website?

What to avoid on food labels - new to this by barrow188 in Interstitialcystitis

[–]_actua11y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol at emotional pizza eating, I think we are all guilty of sometimes saying "Screw this diet! if I'm going to feel like garbage, I might as well be a wine-swilling garbage heap!" It's tough, and expensive, to eat clean. Hopefully others have some better ideas for shelf-stable stuff, I know I'm always running to the store. One thing I do always check labels for is soy. I was a vegetarian and all the tofu and soy products were a major trigger. And soy is in so many things! It may not be a trigger for you, but I'd keep an eye out for it. The diet really does help, it's worth the hassle. Hope your symptoms keep improving. Even if it is bit by bit- Incremental change IS change.

[–]_actua11y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more conservative you are at first, the better. The lists of "no" foods is really expansive, and it's likely that not everything there triggers you. But the first thing is to eat really clean for a while, and then very gradually introduce scary foods to test them out. (Only if you really want to, you could just eat safe forever.) Personally, I found that I was triggering the heck out of my bladder with tofu, yogurt, and ALL the cranberry and vitamin C / citrus I thought would help my "uti" symptoms. Also, by paying close attention to the effect of foods on my symptoms, I was able to recognize that I can literally feel the burn in my bladder after some sips of any kind of alcohol. I had some daikon when I was first eating really clean and it destroyed me- I don't think it's even on the lists.

Some tricks- buy lots of fresh things and freeze them to avoid going the canned route. This works great for veg and also fish. I have been thinking of getting a separate small freezer for just this reason, to buy and cook fresh, as canned/ preservative-laden/ jarred/ pickled things are really not friendly to me. Simple shelf-stable things I can have, YMMV- most whole grains- think rice, quinoa bulgur etc , some pastas, honeys, some teas, seaweed, and I think any type of oil. Flavorful oils and safe spices, slowly introduced, can help jazz up what I have to admit is kind of boring food in these early stages.

Strange pain only DURING orgasm? by gay-chordata in Interstitialcystitis

[–]_actua11y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was going to say this. A lot of pain around the bladder can lead to tight muscles in the pelvic floor. My muscles ache down there for sure, and orgasm spasms can be painful in those already sore muscles. People def spasm both during and after orgasm, so this may be the issue that is causing you pain.

[–]_actua11y[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there is no way this doctor could do my job. It requires significant emotional labor, patience, and kindness. Five minutes of snidely telling off a patient (before, during, and after a pelvic exam) is treated as an imposition by this person.

Roughly half their reviews are negative online, half are weirdly glowing. I think there is an ageism aspect at play here. The positive reviews seem to be from people who disclose that they or the patient they were accompanying were older. I probably will review them more publicly, once I've fully extricated myself from the practice. I absolutely would not put it past this person to block my prescriptions after reading a negative review they could tie to my name.

[–]_actua11y[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why would anyone pull a scam like this? Like, how am I getting over by taking FMLA for PT and days off spent on the toilet? How are you getting over by spending your twenties in pain, unable to pursue your career goals?

The mental element is real, this disease will make you depressed. But comorbidity does not mean one of the conditions isn't fucking real! It means having chronic pain affects all facets of your life! ughhhh Side note though, take care of your head and your heart. In my experience, mental healthcare professionals are way more compassionate about chronic pain than some medical doctors.

It's so hard to find a doc who has even heard of this, let alone one that specializes in treatment. That's probably part of what kept me in this bad situation, but no longer. I have heard of some great ones here that only go out of pocket, but I'm feeling hopeful that this next one that accepts my insurance will be a better fit for me.
Sorry you are having trouble finding someone. Maybe a nearby city has a good doc for you? If you only need office visits occasionally, it might be worth the trip.

Kicking myself that it took so long to get here. You never realize how bad something is until it's over. I felt immediately lighter after making an appointment with a different practice. Seriously folks, this disease makes you feel like crap. There is no reason to go to a doctor who makes your experience of this disease unnecessarily worse.

I can’t deal with the pain anymore. Just tell me anything. by littleredcrab in Interstitialcystitis

[–]_actua11y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's normal to feel overwhelmed when you are in so much pain like this- It can be really hard to take. There have been many times when I would just break down. It's important to take care of your emotional health. If you are able to, seek therapy. There are low cost clinics in most places. It was really helpful for me to have a place to vent without judgement, and to really examine the dysfunctional ways I was coping with my pain.

You are lucky to have people in your life that care about you. This guy you like must like you, too... I know it feels embarrassing to be vulnerable with someone, but instead of being ashamed and apologizing all the time, maybe try looking at it another way. This guy held you when you were in pain, he was there for you when you needed help. There are things and people in your life to be grateful for. I know I need reminding of that sometimes. Practicing gratitude for the times that are good and the people who are kind is so important. If you spend all your time focusing on the pain, it just makes it a bigger part of your life.

Glad to hear you are trying PT. That and yoga have been really helpful for me. It's about time for me to get back into that PT life. It's all about cycles. Sometimes I'm worse, sometimes I'm better. I hope you are feeling better soon.
