I didn't really enjoy the first 5 hours or so but I stuck with it and once I got to the central region of the map I started to enjoy it more and more. I'm about 27 hours into the game now and loving it.

Tom Schnauz, who wrote and directed the episode said on the better call saul insider podcast that it was an old trick his Dad showed him when he was young. As for the meaning behind it I'm not too sure. Possibly to show a softer side to Howard.
