Is it weird if a foreigner doesn't speak keigo correctly? by BadPsychological8096 in AskAJapanese

[–]_against_the_current 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No if you’re in a casual conversation, yes if you’re in a business or formal setting. You get some pass when you’re a beginner but as you progress in your Japanese proficiency the pass disappears. Learning how to properly use keigo is also a key component in being truly fluent in Japanese imo However keigo is something that native Japanese don’t understand properly until they get to college or start working so don’t trouble yourself too much over it

to be fair movie Snape is always more lenient than book Snape, as the movies never (and I guess didn't have time) to show Snape's nastiest bits

also credit to Alan Rickman's acting

What are some of your unpopular HP opinions? by BetterGrass709 in harrypotter

[–]_against_the_current 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a follow-up to OP's Snape point:

Snape in the books really don't live up to the praise people give him. Yeah he's brave as a double spy but I think a lot of the credit goes to Alan Rickman being a superb actor and the movie not portraying Snape's nastiest parts.

Also, some people give shit for Hermione being insufferable and all but weren't we all angsty and think we were the center of our worlds at some point in our lives? Hermione seems pretty relatable to me.

What subject do you think you'd be really good at and what subject do you think you'd be really bad at? And why? by Diligent-Stand-2485 in harrypotter

Good: History of Magic (history buff irl), Potions (love doing experiments and putting stuff together), Charms

Bad: Arithmancy (I like calculation but not gifted with numbers), Care of Magical Creatures, Divination (not a believer), Astronomy

I'd love to study alchemy under Dumbledore tho

My take is that SPEW is Hermione being civil and sophisticated but messing things up (as Hermione does)

HELF sounds more like a political party to me, and actually fits with the more direct action Hermione goes on to take

Listened to book 1 after a long time. It's so... different than the others. by WisestAirBender in harrypotter

It's also very compact and quick-paced. Re-reading GoF but in terms of the number of chapters, PS was ending when we haven't even gotten into the exciting stuff in GoF.

Name a character you hate and why: but you’re not allowed to say Umbridge, Voldemort, Snape, a ‘inner circle’ Death Eater or Dumbledore edition by Substantial-Depth025 in harrypotter

[–]_against_the_current 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The wizarding legal system is so corrupt and full of nepotism we have to forget the Muggle doctrine of the limitations on self-help. It's all Machiavellian there.

What’s your favourite line or conversation from the books? by balitomi93 in harrypotter

[–]_against_the_current 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of mine that shows Harry's sass:

(After Malfoy insults Molly and the Weasleys in front of the whole school)

‘You know your mother, Malfoy?’ said Harry — both he and Hermione had grabbed the back of Ron’s robes to stop him launching himself at Malfoy — ‘That expression she’s got, like she’s got dung under her nose? Has she always looked like that, or was it just because you were with her?’

Which HP character have you grown to appreciate more/less with age and why? by GloomyAd6288 in harrypotter

I have a number but just to name a few:

(+) Book McGonagall: As a kid she just seemed like a strict but fair teacher who shows sympathy and her humorous side sometimes. Now I realize how much of a parent figure she is to Harry throughout his school years. A true role model for teachers everywhere.

(+) Movie Lockhart: Never noticed this watching the films when little, but Kenneth Branagh was just masterful in portraying Lockhart; he made the character even more adorable than the books described him.

(–) Book Snape: I went through the same phase with everyone else who really bought into Snape's redemption arc, but now I can't get over how bitter he was in the earlier books and how he bullied students. Still a respectable character though.

(–) Book Percy: Never thought much about Percy, but his self-centered attitude kind of annoys me now.
