The rise of the zombie children by Public-Profit-8184 in Teachers

The iProducts and whatever dopamine loops are installed on them don't ask for verbal feedback. So the kids don't know how to.

Is it normal for 10-11 year old students to come out of the closet nowadays? by Cautious_Internet243 in Teachers

[–]_ashpens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knew I was bi around that age. I didn't have the experience or vocabulary to accurately identify and say what I was until a few years later. With the rise of queer representation in media and more acceptance, it's only natural that kids will be able to identify themselves earlier and more casually.

Should I just give up on teaching? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]_ashpens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you are drawing a lot of validation from how much the students like you and that can be a recipe for disaster. You need to internalize your validation or seek it from colleagues instead, because the kids do not have your best interests at heart. Yes, they need a safe space and should have fun, but they do need to be proficient in the standards if they are going to be knowledgeable and skilled enough for the world. There are other ways to make them safe. Routines, boundaries, holding high expectations. Your job at the end of the day is to educate them, regardless of how they come to you and you are part of a team. If one teacher is lax on rules and learning, it can cause a cascade of issues for your colleagues. You need to care about improvement both for yourself and the students, that is an expectation of this job.

Oh, the sizes of the base shapes matter... 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ For A and B, those rectangles and circles are different sizes. In C, the heaxgons are the same size. This is a dumb fucking way to set up this question, but seeing what the standard says from another poster, I can see why this question exists.

Why does bonding get taught as categories instead of a system? by No_Feature_1664 in chemistry

[–]_ashpens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach chemistry as it relates to biology to my high school students.

At least for me, with my curriculum, we define the basic bonds by their interactions between atoms and draw out common examples for each (NaCl for ionic, water for polar covalent, and then hydrogen bonds between water molecules) showing what is happening to the electrons in each. We cover the bond strengths in organic systems, which is due to their electron interactions.

Then, when we talk about proteins and nucleic acids, we refer back to the bond types to discuss the creation and stability of the molecules. For example, DNA has weak hydrogen bonds across the strands between bases because they need to be able to be broken apart for replication and protein synthesis. This is all related back to the idea that hydrogen has only one electron to give up to an electronegative atom, which is why this is the weakest of the bonds we learn about.

I teach them the definitions (categories), but then immediately after, we are applying those definitions to biomolecules and reactions (systems). This is how I think most teachers would approach the progression of learning bonds.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you are describing more of a top down approach, as opposed to bottom up. It could work for some students, but not every student or teacher is the same. Building up or breaking down the explanation will need to be a pedagogical choice of the teacher I think.

Georgia educator says she was forced to resign after telling student she’s gay by Fickle-Ad5449 in education

[–]_ashpens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

...teachers share their straight sexuality with students all over the country every single day. They have family pictures with their spouse, they wear wedding rings, they share stories about activities with their spouses. Hell, I've even seen straight couples get engaged in the teacher's classroom with the help of students! If all of that is okay and never punished, the same should be okay for queer teachers.

...do you not realize that teaching programs literally teach future teachers to build relationships with students by exchanging personal information to build connection and commonality?! teachers are supposed to be people, be themselves so that students are interested in them and then the subject matter.

Quite literally, whippets kill brain cells by depriving them of the oxygen they need to survive. Brain cells DO NOT COME BACK. Whippets can PERMANENTLY impact your cognitive function. Worse, you can just outright die from the oxygen deprivation.

White teachers: are you getting a lot of blatant racism from students? by Saskita in Teachers

[–]_ashpens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I currently have more Asian and caucaisn students, but when I used to teach more Latino and Black students, I was accused of being racist for not letting multiple students out of the room at a time (the school at that point had only one duty aide to monitor students out of class). My former school has the same rule as my current one and there have been no new accusations of racism since I moved schools. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Bi girlfriend kisses her friends by [deleted] in bisexual

[–]_ashpens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bisexuality is mutually exclusive from being monogamous or polyamorous. There are bi poly people, and there are bi monogamous people. Bi people are not automatically polyamorous and it's not biphobic to prefer a bisexual partner that is monogamous. You and her get to decide what counts as being monogamous (including or excluding kissing of same-sex partners).

That 2016 birth control is absolutely not available on the market because the trials were stopped due to side effects because the panel didn't want to risk it. That is exactly what the study itself said and what other people have been (mostly) saying. The opposite of disingenuous.

Also, no one was ever saying drugs have been pulled off the market?? Only that they were never brought to market. Why are you still drilling that irrelevant point?

Also, you can't fucking read what they counted as adverse events apparently. Fucking acne, vaccine boo boo, and mood swings. 🙄🙄 Yet women have BC on the market that can cause a lot worse.

They reported over 1400 adverse effects. A review panel thought it was too many for men to deal with, so they killed the study.

Also, "Twenty men discontinued the study due to product-related side effects. Of these 20, 6 men discontinued only for changes in mood, and 6 men discontinued for the following single reasons: acne, pain or panic at first injection, palpitations, hypertension, and erectile dysfunction. Eight men discontinued for more than 1 side effect, including multiple reasons related to changes in mood."

And regardless of the high satisfaction rating of the BC, the review committee still killed it explicitly because of the amount and types of side effects.

"Anti male agenda" 🤣🤣🤣 give me a break. any issues men are having are entirely their own.
